Obama orders new plans to prepare for climate change

(CNN) - President Barack Obama required federal agencies on Friday to present plans to combat climate change.

An executive order mandated steps to make it easier for communities "to strengthen their resilience to extreme weather and prepare for other impacts of climate change," according to a White House statement.

It also creates an interagency Council on Climate Preparedness and Resilience, charged with overseeing federal efforts at fighting climate change.

Made up of representatives from across the federal government, the council will work with a task force of state, local and tribal leadership also created by Obama's order.

The task force will advise the Obama administration on how the federal government "can respond to the needs of communities nationwide that are dealing with the impacts of climate change," according to the statement.

Obama charged federal agencies to modernize their programs supporting "climate-resilient investments," like their building policies for local governments, especially after natural disasters.

He also ordered land management policies that will protect natural resources and the development of data sets for Americans to better understand climate change.

U.N. climate change report points blame at humans

The dual working groups have their work cut out for them as climate science clashes with political realities.

Congressional Republicans oppose virtually any effort to combat climate change, critical of federal regulations on emissions as burdensome on business. They are skeptical of the physical evidence on global warming, which an overwhelming majority of climate scientists support.

A recent survey released by the Pew Research Center showed that two-thirds of Americans, 67%, believe there to be solid evidence to support a warming Earth. Scientists say that scenario is causing increasingly violent storms and rising oceans.

While the overall percentage of Americans who accept climate change science has remained unchanged over the past few years, according to Pew, rifts within the Republican Party remain strong.

Only one in four (25%) tea party Republicans identified by Pew think there's solid evidence of global warming, compared to 61% of Republicans who do not identify with the tea party.

Obama has already angered Republicans with various efforts aimed at curbing climate change, particularly an executive order issued in June aimed at reducing carbon emissions.

Many of these same Republicans claim to be devout Christians. I call them false propehts. The Book of Revelations makes it clear that the Christian God cherishes the Earth, while condemming those who foul it to death.

    Revelations 9

3 And there came out of the smoke locusts upon the earth: and unto them was given power, as the scorpions of the earth have power.

4 And it was commanded them that they should not hurt the grass of the earth, neither any green thing; but only those men which have not the seal of God in their foreheads.

Oh brother. Dude can't get a website to work properly and he thinks he can stop naturally occurring climate cycles on a planetary scale. Clueless.

Shame on President Obama for trying to make air quality a top priority in America.

If the people who don't think that the climate is changing haven't been looking outside lately. The fact that storms have been changing and the air is warmer should be a clue to most people. There are some out there that don't think what we are doing is enough. My question is that they sit in a sealed room with a small fire that is slowly burning. That should change their mind quickly because that is what we are doing.

I'm sorry Rudy, but didn't you know the only real purpose of the Bible is for finding groups of people to discriminate (and perhaps war) against?

After all the Tea-head claims of no birth certificate, no global climate change, creationism, benghazi, christian nation, etc., how can they top all that? What is next? I am guessing space aliens. Yes, Obama has invited space aliens to join his evil dictatorship.

Until other countries such as china and india get on board with curbing pollution, nothing we do will have any positive effects.

What we really need to do is find a way to convince the GOP/Teatrolls that the best way for them to sabotage and disprove the global warming and climate change "hoaxes" is to keep their yaps shut, so they stop spewing their hot air that so contributes to rising global temperatures. That'll show the Uppity One, right GOPers/Teatrolls!?!?!?!11!!!!

And haven't they all gotten the memo? All of the data over the last 15 years does show ANY global warming! Yeah, let's not reality protrude on the nutty leftist fantasy world.

Even a t-bagger should get this: fact – CO2 levels are highest in recorded history; fact – humans need O2 to breath; fact – too much CO2 and not enough O2 in the air kills humans; fact – if CO2 levels continue to rise, all animal life will die, including humans. Therefore, if they don't buy the human causing waming issue, they can at least admit too much CO2 is still bad for us, and get on the band wagon and do something not only to reduce CO2 emissions, but take steps to start trapping excess CO2 and sequestering it in the ground!

So we just sit back and keep burning dirty coal and mid east oil? Sorry smith, or should I say "just askin-just sayin". I love my kids too much to leave them with a dead planet.

    @smith,

"Until other countries such as china and india get on board with curbing pollution, nothing we do will have any positive effects."

Well, perhaps one positive effect: we can lead the way for India and China. They're looking at us and going, "They don't care, why should we?" When such environmental policies become norms, even recalcitrant nations like China will slowly, perhaps resentfully, get on board. Global pressure and even a couple of lashes to their economic backs may further the argument, as well.

Remember when the USA used to LEAD in stuff?

  20. Name jk. Sfl. GOP CRUZ lee&rubio 24billion dallar LOSS of your tax money conservatives, the garbage of America.

So what's the GOP bafoons party been doing for the last five or six years, oh ya, 42 anti healthcare votes and nothing on jobs, or education but protect those oil company tax breaks worth 40 billion a year,on top of the 24 billion the GOP flushed down the toilet 2 weeks ago. It's clear the GOP is trying to starve the goverment of revenue if they don't like the program . The GOP needs to be kick out of office in 2014 midterms. Obamacare is a minor problem compared to what the GOP teaparty idiots are trying to do!!!!!

Disgusting what happens in China and India, isn't it? Considering how many American businesses have relocated to China and India, one would think that our America CEO's might do a better job convincing China and India to clear a more workable pollution control path (so to speak) when accepting what would otherwise be our American jobs produced IN America.

15 years with no appreciable change in global temperature. No correlation between atmospheric CO2 levels and temperature (run the data yourself – I did). Scientific models are wrong – but consensus says that it must be happening – it has to be happening – and we need to do something even if it isn't happening!! Why? Because our view of the world says so!! We don't need facts – we have an opinion!!

Global warming is a lie, oh wait its called climate change now. Its insane that people fall for this crap. In 2013 there was 60 percent more ice on the earth's caps than in 2012. These 'scientests' were predicting an ice free 2013. Lets relax and take a deep breath of the cold air. Here in ohio we had the earliest frost i can remember.
