(CNN) - The son of Sen. James Inhofe was killed in a plane crash on Sunday, the senator's office confirmed.
Dr. Perry Inhofe, an orthopedic surgeon, was killed when the plane he was aboard crashed near Owasso, Oklahoma.
Inhofe's office, while not releasing a comment from the family, sent out an email Tuesday with a statement from the Oklahoma Department of Public Safety confirming the identity of the victim.
The National Transportation Safety Board said the crash is currently under investigation.
Secretary of Defense Chuck Hagel put out a statement on Monday expressing his condolences.
“I was deeply saddened to learn that Senator Jim Inhofe's son Perry was killed in a plane crash this weekend,” Hagel said.
“My thoughts and prayers are with Jim and Kay and their family as they mourn this terrible loss.”
Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid and Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell expressed their condolences Tuesday from the Senate floor.
"I’d like to start with a word of sympathy about the heartbreaking loss of Kerry Inhofe, our colleague Jim Inhofe’s son killed in a plane crash on Sunday," McConnell said. "Of course we are all thinking of Jim and Kay and the heartfelt prayers of the entire senate family are with them and the entire Inhofe family at this very difficult time."
The Oklahoma Republican announced over the summer that he would seek reelection next year.
I think it is called karma. And Joe, if you want to hold your breath because you are ashamed of some of the posters, feel free to do so.
Wow! The lovinfg left exposed....again......The left loves everyone....as long as they agree with them.
I'm sorry for your loss Senator. May you find peace and comfort to carry you through this most difficult time.
There's always a time and a place to criticize public officials, especially in this age. This is not one of those times, however.
This is what happens when you vote to shut down the government and disrupt people's lives. ME NO SORRY!
Are you people truly that far gone? Everything – EVERYTHING – boils down to a political hammer-point for some of you? Christ Almighty, someone you don't even know just lost a child...and the best you can do is offer up tired, inappropriate political digs to check off your talking points list o' the day? I've known some losers in my time, but some of you truly take the cake. You obviously have no shame, along with a conscience or any sense of decorum or grace.
Inhofe consistently votes against any measure that might reduce the number of kids getting blown away by guns. I wonder if he feels for those parents? What bothers me is all the comments of people that offer condolences to someone they don't know over the death of someone they don't know, and who will forget about Inhofe by the end of their post, and then condemn those who say, in essence, "Karma for a guy who has NO problem inflicting pain via his Congressional voting record on the children and parents of the poor and Middle Class." But people want to play this scripted game where we automatically feel for a parent who loses a kid, as some people say, "no matter what his politics are". Right...and nonsense. His kid may have been a good guy, buy Inhofe has no hesitation leaving the poor and Middle-Class to struggle while the rich get richer, who thinks GW is a myth, as well as the harm to mankind we're seeing from it, votes against affordable college loans, votes against workplace equality, votes against any sensible gun law, even as kids get blown away all over the country, etc., etc., etc. My only regret is that it wasn't Inhofe. As far as I'm concerned, he is the enemy, and represents a vicious, backward, anti-American contingent that wrap themselves in the flag while spouting devotion to Jesus...while dishonoring both.
