Sen. Inhofe’s son killed in plane crash

Updated 6:26 p.m. ET, 11/12/2013

(CNN) - The son of Sen. James Inhofe was killed in a plane crash on Sunday, the senator's office confirmed.

Dr. Perry Inhofe, an orthopedic surgeon, was killed when the plane he was aboard crashed near Owasso, Oklahoma.

Inhofe's office, while not releasing a comment from the family, sent out an email Tuesday with a statement from the Oklahoma Department of Public Safety confirming the identity of the victim.

The National Transportation Safety Board said the crash is currently under investigation.

Secretary of Defense Chuck Hagel put out a statement on Monday expressing his condolences.

“I was deeply saddened to learn that Senator Jim Inhofe's son Perry was killed in a plane crash this weekend,” Hagel said.

“My thoughts and prayers are with Jim and Kay and their family as they mourn this terrible loss.”

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid and Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell expressed their condolences Tuesday from the Senate floor.

"I’d like to start with a word of sympathy about the heartbreaking loss of Kerry Inhofe, our colleague Jim Inhofe’s son killed in a plane crash on Sunday," McConnell said. "Of course we are all thinking of Jim and Kay and the heartfelt prayers of the entire senate family are with them and the entire Inhofe family at this very difficult time."

The Oklahoma Republican announced over the summer that he would seek reelection next year.

    @Anonymous:

From ABC: "Dr. Perry Inhofe, a 52-year-old orthopedic surgeon, died when the small plane he was piloting crashed Sunday near Owasso, a Tulsa suburb." This would seem to indicate that he was the only one on board. Yes, they do make airplanes now that only require a single pilot to operate. Thanks for letting your hatred of one half of Americans get in the way of learning the facts first.

Condolences to the Senator and his family.

Sad to lose a child. Good thing Senator Inhofe has his faith... I suppose GOD had his reasons for doing this then.

This is probably the only funeral in the world that the Westboro Babtist Church wont protest.

Sorry for his loss, but since he thinks government is too intrusive, I suggest the NTSB not investigate the crash. Just a waste of government resources senator.

Prayers and best wishes for the Senator and his family at this time of tragedy and loss. Any mention of politics is both inappropriate and juvenile.

Sincere condolences to the Inhofe family. As much as I disagree with him,...
That being said, it is interesting to hear he was the pilot. Inhofe was known for disregarding basic courtesy and safety rules while flying. He got away with landing his plane on a clearly marked air strip without permission. But only because he was a Senator...

My condolences to the Senator and his family. I also agree, no parent should have to bury their child. And that means NO PARENT. I seem to remember not very long ago where many of you were cheering a wannabe rent a cop for murdering a child. The comments posted here and many other places were despicable. People need to learn compassion for others because you never know when the shoe will be on the other foot.

The Senator at least got to watch HIS child, become a man. Compassion people, you'll never know when you're going to need it.

I don't rightly care where you stand on politics or beliefs; losing a child (no matter how old) is devastating beyond measure. My heart goes out to the man's family and friends.

Sorry the son died. Condolences to the family.
His father has embarrassed the state of Oklahoma for too many years. Maybe this is the wake-up call he needs to either grow a heart for fellow humans and planet earth, or step aside to focus on his family.

Inhofe is not a nice person. He had more than most spent 6 years spreading hatred in politics. As a member of the Armed Services Committee, he was among the panelists questioning witnesses about the Abu Ghraib prisoner abuse. There he made news by claiming he was “outraged by the outrage” over the revelations of abuse, suggesting that shock at the crimes was more offensive than the crimes themselves. In 2006, Inhofe was one of only nine senators to vote against the Detainee Treatment Act of 2005 which prohibits “cruel, inhuman or degrading” treatment of individuals in U.S. Government custody.
