(CNN) – Sen. John Cornyn, the Senate's second-ranking Republican, kicked off his re-election campaign on Friday at an event in Austin where he was joined by Texas Gov. Rick Perry.
"Texas is the model for the rest of the country, and we need to make the rest of the country more like Texas–not the other way around," Cornyn said.
The Senator's campaign launch comes amid uncertainty over whether he will face a primary challenger. But with a December 9 filing deadline looming, no major opposition has stepped up so far.
Cornyn was elected to his second term in 2008, taking 55% of the vote against Democrat Rick Noriega. In the 2014 bid, he faces no well-known Democrats so far.
The Senator starts his 2014 campaign with a hefty war chest of about $7 million, according to Federal Election Commission records.
