Republican senator: Time to start over on health care

(CNN) - Following the stormy launch of HealthCare.gov and the uproar over canceled health insurance policies, Americans would best be served by starting from scratch on health care reform, Sen. John Barrasso, R-Wyoming, said Sunday.

"It's time to start over. This health care law is terribly flawed. It is broken; it has failed the American people," Barrasso, a physician, said on CNN's "State of the Union." "I think there's going to be a massive taxpayer bailout needed just to deal with the impact of this health care law."

A longtime opponent of Obamacare, Barrasso said Americans are "being hit by sticker shock" now that they're able to enroll for health insurance through the exchanges established by the 2010 Affordable Care Act.

"This is not what the American people wanted. The President did not need to destroy a good health care system to try to make a better one, but that's what we have now," he said.

After millions began receiving cancellation notices of their existing health–despite being assured by the President that the opposite would happen–President Barack Obama announced on Thursday his administration would allow insurers to extend those canceled plans for a year, even if they don't meet Obamacare requirements.

But Barrasso said the proposal is "basically a false fix" and a "political Band-Aid."

"It's not a permanent cure for the people that are being hurt by his policies. So it's time to start over with trying to get people the health care that they wanted from the beginning," he told CNN chief political correspondent Candy Crowley.

What really needs to be shown is what the GOP wants to do get more people covered by health insurance so that they can afford to get medical care that prevents problems. I haven't seen anything like that.
