Obama approval rating sinks to new low in CNN poll

Washington (CNN) – As President Barack Obama's approval rating hits another all-time low, a new national survey also indicates that Americans say the President has less power than congressional Republicans when it comes to shaping events over the next year.

According to a CNN/ORC poll released Thursday, 41% of Americans approve of the job the President's doing in the White House, the lowest level for that crucial indicator in CNN polling. Fifty-six percent questioned say they disapprove of Obama's performance, an all-time high in CNN surveys.

The President's approval rating has now reached new lows or tied his all-time lows in polls released over the past three weeks from CNN/ORC, CBS News, ABC News/Washington Post, Quinnipiac University, National Journal Heartland Monitor, and NBC News/Wall Street Journal. And the CNN survey is the fourth non-partisan live operator national poll released this week to put Obama's approval rating between 40% and 42%. A CBS News survey released Wednesday showed the President's approval rating at 37%.

Geography appears to play a role in the President's falling numbers.

"The drop in Obama's approval rating comes entirely among suburbanites," said CNN Polling Director Keating Holland. "Compared to the October CNN poll, positive views of Obama held steady among people who live in big cities and rural areas. But in the suburbs, his approval rating was 45% a month ago but has dropped to just 37% now."

The President's overall job approval rating is down three points since mid-October after being stuck in the mid-40s for several months in CNN polling. But it's worth noting that Obama's woes did not begin with the disastrous launch of the HealthCare.gov website in October, Holland pointed out.

"The real damage came in June, when reports about NSA spying and IRS treatment of conservative groups caused an eight-point drop in his approval rating - a far more significant change than what the numbers from October suggest," he said.

Who should shape Washington?

Fifty percent believe that congressional Republicans will have more influence over the direction the nation takes in the next year while only 42% saying the President will have more influence, according to the poll. That's a change from November 2012, when more six in ten said Obama would have more influence in the year to come.

Who should have more influence is a different story.

The poll shows 47% want Obama to be in charge while 45% say the GOP should have more influence over the country.

"There is a hint of good news for the President - but only a hint - in those numbers, since that means that the number of Americans who support Obama in his struggles with the GOP is a bit higher than the 41% approval rating would suggest. But that number is also a step down in Obama's support, representing a four-point decline since the last time the question was asked just after Obama won re-election last year," Holland said.

The poll was conducted Nov. 18-20 for CNN by ORC International, with 843 adult Americans questioned by telephone. The survey's overall sampling error is plus or minus 3.5 percentage points.

I do not really think that anybody has any respect or trust for the pathological liar Obama. Karzai ,Bibi -Iran Cuba- Brazil and American public are fed up with him and Reid and his goons. Why does he not declare martial Law and take away any rights that we have left?

Of course it would be the suburbanites that the president is losing, they are the ones that buy health insurance. They are the ones that will subsidize those they will not be paying for insurance. They are also the ones that will vote, and those people are the ones that took Obama's lies personally. The president can expect his fight with the GOP numbers to go dramatically down because of the nuclear option. Many people don't understand what it is but they understand that it is wrong from either party and Obama put it in place.
The real damage to Obama is from people that are not mentioned in this story, the young, women and independents. Obama's numbers are in the tank and there is no chance they will turn around without a catastrophic event happening.

In my location his rating is a lot less than 40 %/ He just don't have any experience to be the potus and so his leadership is not in the best interest of American. The damage he has done with ACA that is a 100$ liberal democrat legislation and now the nuke move by dingy harry to drag us into an even lower status. All done for a power grab to control your every move by the corrupt government we now have. Go Figure!

I am not at all surprised. While I am a Democrat and voted twice for the President, the rotten deal that he is going to shove down the throats of Americans relative staying in Afghanistan forever (like Korea, Europe, etc., etc.) at a cost of hundreds of billions of dollars more we do not have is a traitorous act given all his promises about ending wars and involvements in other countries.....I am disgusted, annoyed and feel betrayed. At this point, I will NOT vote for Hillary Clinton if she runs unless the plainly promises and swears to God to reject / repudiate / pull out of/ and sever any such atrocious agreement foisted upon all of us with no say so at all!!!!

GOP does not like whatever Obama does, but who care? economy is on the way up, employment is on the way up, and dow jones is above 16000. Obama does everything in his power to help American, not the political parties.

He talks good but his actions are terrible. It's too bad that people like him can get elected to high office because they can hire good speach writers. You take a poll, find out what the people want to hear, and feed it back to them. A hell of a way to run a country. I'll bet the farm Harry Truman never had a speach writer!

It amazes me that it took the American public (5) years to discover that Obama is a steaming turd. That says something about the "lack of scrutiny" on the part of the American public! Now that Obama was not able to sell very many tickets to his latest fund raiser in San Francisco, they had to lower the prices from $1000.00 to $500.00 per person. You would have to pay me at least $1000.00 to go see this steaming turd!

That's still higher than GWB's 38% approval rating at the same point in his presidency. Once the ACA web site is up and running properly it will quickly increase.

This is a surprise? He has long lied to us. And then there is this end to the Filibuster – his attack on the minority, the little guy. Wow, after reading the 2005 NYT editorials excoriating the attempt to end the filibuster, after watching Biden's and Obama's Senate floor speeches in 2005 excoriating the attempt to end the filibuster, and how bad such a move would be on democracy and for this nation I now see this. So, they were cynically lying then, huh? They were right then – but didn't mean it. They are wrong in doing what they did now. Bad move. Epic.

After yesterday's power grab by the Democrats and President Obama's little speech, they probably can no longer keep up with his falling approval ratings. All the lies coming out of the White House about Obamacare are just making it worse. We need a Federal Government that will enforce our immigration laws and deport all illegal aliens and create more jobs in the United States instead of spending their time pandering to special interest groups

Liars lie and Obama is a liar. The world knows, our Nation knows and we all know. The people do not respect this man who is sitting on the president's office. Obama may have very well been born here but he does not share out Nation's culture or beliefs.

Just listen to FOX news and the GOPs....they are everywhere telling us to hate our President just like they do. They also tell us to hate our federal government. Yes, let's hate our government and our country. We are a miserable place. Let's tell the world to not have democracy because you only hate the people you elect. 80% of Americans don't vote Democracy is a failure.

Those approval ratings would be even lower except for all of the conservatives who think Obama has been doing just great the past 3 weeks. Keep it going, Mr. President! You are on a roll. (How about you tell America that no one ever told you Obamacare would cause policies to cancel. And no one ever told you . . .)
