Rush Limbaugh uses rape analogy to decry filibuster rule change

(CNN) - Conservative radio talk show host Rush Limbaugh used an analogy about rape Friday to blast this week’s decision by the Senate's Democratic majority to change the chamber’s filibuster rules despite the unanimous opposition of minority Republicans.

The so-called “nuclear option” will allow a bare majority of senators – as opposed to 60 - to approve most judicial and executive branch nominations. The Democratic caucus controls 55 of the chamber’s 100 seats.

"Let's say, let's take 10 people in a room and they're a group. And the room is made up of six men and four women. The group has a rule that the men cannot rape the women. The group also has a rule that says any rule that will be changed must require six votes, of the 10, to change the rule," Limbaugh told listeners.

"Every now and then, some lunatic in the group proposes to change the rule to allow women to be raped. But they never were able to get six votes for it. There were always the four women voting against it and they always found two guys.”

Limbaugh continued: “Well, the guy that kept proposing that women be raped finally got tired of it, and he was in the majority and he was one that (said), 'You know what? We're going to change the rule. Now all we need is five."

“And well, 'You can't do that.' 'Yes we are. We're the majority. We're changing the rule.' And then they vote. Can the women be raped? Well, all it would take then is half of the room,” Limbaugh said.

“You can change the rule to say three. You can change the rule to say three people want it, it's going to happen. There's no rule. When the majority can change the rules there aren't any."

Friday’s analogy isn’t Limbaugh’s first inflammatory comment about women. Last year, the radio host apologized for a comment he made on his show about Georgetown law student Sandra Fluke, calling her a "slut" after she testified about contraception on Capitol Hill.

    @Fair is fair
    We love you rush!

    =====

    Do you think he really cares about people like you ? Rush is an act , a showman , a entertainer who couldn't make a living as a sports announcer. He works you people for every dime he can . He's a modern day snake oil salesman at the county fair . I find it hilariously sad that people such as yourself believe Rush or any ultra right wing nut job is in anyway concerned
    about your wellbeing .

    You also must love Florida Congressman Trey Radel , he cares about you and your family and the freedoms that make America strong .

    Love him or hate him, he's right. Truly a sad day for the U.S. Obama just changes the rules if he can't win. He's such a weak President.

    We love you Rush !

    Nah . . . not really. But you can be entertaining. Of course, I'm absolutely opposed to just about everything you say. But when I'm in the mood to sneer and laugh and scoff at really stupid, crass, low-brow, and transparently manipulative Right Wing Rhetoric . . . YOU are my go-to guy.

    You help to clearly delineate the forces of Evil from the forces of Good. I am happy to be on the side of Good, listening to a blithering buffoon blather away on the other side. You reinforce my faith in the rightness of my thinking. Thanks for the entertainment. Thanks for being our foil. Thanks for illustrating just how disgusting and wrong your side usually can be.

    Good job man.

    5 out of 10 aren't a majority. 6 out of 10 would be a majority. Rush, Rush...

    Jim– you should stay away from the kook aid. It's the Republican states that get more tax dollars than they put in. They should thank those liberal states that subsidize those Republican. Who is stealing from whom!

    this guy is a waste of space and air, everyone will be much better off when he no longer exist. All he needs to do to make his feelings truly known is to break out his white sheets and white hood! as he is nothing more than an old racist dinosaur!

  10. ThinkAgain: The GOP owes our nation $24 billion

    Correction:

    Some people dismiss Limbaugh as nothing more than an "entertainer." He is, not only because he's been spewing his hate and lies for more than two decades, but because he continues to do so, even as it harms our country.

    Should read HE IS NOT an entertainer (for the reasons listed above).

    No change to my plans to dance a jig when he's gone.

    I know its tough, but try to use the Logical side of your brain. Someone said the 'rape' word and too many of you instantly thought with the 'feeling' side of your brain. It was an analogy! He tried to keep it simple and you couldn't even get it then. I bet CNN would give anything to have Rush Limbough's ratings. Just sayin...

    I think the problem with Rush and why he is constantly and everlastingly slurring women is because he is upset because he is not a woman and never had the chance to change into being one.

    The difference being, of course, that the whole rape thing is covered by LAW, while that whole filibuster thing is a procedural rule. Not a law. The made a mistake making it too easy to invoke a filibuster, and the Republicans almost changed the rule last administration. Then they set about doubling the number of filibusters ever enacted in the history of the senate in just five years. Of course the Democrats changed to rule.

  15. Not Too Hard To Understand

    But to be fair here, folks, not one ever said Limbaugh was particularly bright. After all, the dude has no formal education, so he only operates from base emotion, not intellect or empirics.

    First off, Rush is not an elected official, so who cares.
    But if you do think we should care, then what about the fact that Martin Bashir told Sarah Palin to go eat sh!t right on this very channel. Where is the big article on that offensive behavior?

  19. Former republican, now an independent

    I cannot figure out why anyone of reasonable intelligence would pay any attention to a man who makes over $50 million dollars a year for ranting and raving like a child who doesn't get his way. As a further insult to intelligence, most of his rants have little factual substance whatsoever.

    Ten men are in a room. Six of them are average Americans, one is El Rushbo, and three others are loyal listeners of ER. They suddenly all notice that the family Mastiff has left a fresh and steaming pile of doughnuts on the floor. Before arranging ta majority vote on who should have to clean up the mess, Rush obliges while having his listeners videotape the act. Afterward, he thanks his listeners for their cooperation, smacks his lips, and says: "This will make great headlines and renew my waning relevance."
