Rush Limbaugh uses rape analogy to decry filibuster rule change

(CNN) - Conservative radio talk show host Rush Limbaugh used an analogy about rape Friday to blast this week’s decision by the Senate's Democratic majority to change the chamber’s filibuster rules despite the unanimous opposition of minority Republicans.

The so-called “nuclear option” will allow a bare majority of senators – as opposed to 60 - to approve most judicial and executive branch nominations. The Democratic caucus controls 55 of the chamber’s 100 seats.

"Let's say, let's take 10 people in a room and they're a group. And the room is made up of six men and four women. The group has a rule that the men cannot rape the women. The group also has a rule that says any rule that will be changed must require six votes, of the 10, to change the rule," Limbaugh told listeners.

"Every now and then, some lunatic in the group proposes to change the rule to allow women to be raped. But they never were able to get six votes for it. There were always the four women voting against it and they always found two guys.”

Limbaugh continued: “Well, the guy that kept proposing that women be raped finally got tired of it, and he was in the majority and he was one that (said), 'You know what? We're going to change the rule. Now all we need is five."

“And well, 'You can't do that.' 'Yes we are. We're the majority. We're changing the rule.' And then they vote. Can the women be raped? Well, all it would take then is half of the room,” Limbaugh said.

“You can change the rule to say three. You can change the rule to say three people want it, it's going to happen. There's no rule. When the majority can change the rules there aren't any."

Friday’s analogy isn’t Limbaugh’s first inflammatory comment about women. Last year, the radio host apologized for a comment he made on his show about Georgetown law student Sandra Fluke, calling her a "slut" after she testified about contraception on Capitol Hill.

Ignoring the misogyny, if there are ten voters, how can there be a majority without 6 votes?

I'm just a silly woman, so maybe I can't grasp the nuance of this complicated conversation. But, if there were 10 people comprised of 4 women and 6 rape-prone men (his characterization, not mine), they would be able to vote in rape without changing the hypothetical rules this idiot is trying to use as analogy.

"The group has a rule that the men cannot rape the women. The group also has a rule that says any rule that will be changed must require six votes, of the 10, to change the rule."

These imaginary women were no more protected with the "six" rule than the "four rule".

"When the majority can change the rules there aren't any."
That is what democracy is; the majority rules. The GOP's obstructionism to block every appointment by the president knew no bounds. Enough was enough. Something had to be done if we have to move along. If you kid cried everyday to avoid going to school, will you let him?

That's ok, lets wait and see what happens when the power shifts to the other side and it will at some time or another.

We will see what happens when the Republicans take the Senate, and keep the House and take the White House. Then they apply the rule to legislation and Supreem Court Nominees as well. The Left will have a collective Heart Attack. Their rule, their idea. Rush used an outrageous example to make a point of how outrageous this "Rule Change" was by the Democrats. The day will come when they will be sorry as they can be that they did this.

Thank you Rush. With guys like you on the airways, you are helping average American realize how pathetic the Republican party remains. Thanks for the millions of voters you turn into liberal thinkers who can out think your stupid advice.

Problem with Rush is he has not passed grade 3 math. 5 out of 10 does not a majority make. It would still require 6 for a majority. Get some education Rush.

Unfortunately, WillyNilly is wrong on two counts. Firstly, Limbaugh is not a moron. He is a very intelligent, very eloquent speaker. That is what makes the garbage he spews very troubling – the fact that he knows it's destructive and untruthful, but does it anyway just for money.
Secondly, there are not 'some', but many people who listen and believe his lies, and that's what is dragging this country down.

Hey Rush, weren't you LEAVING the USA bc President Obama was reelected? Come-on you've had long enough to pack, whine, and complain. When can we celebrate your departure? Typical repub; all promises, but it's nothing but lies.

I think that instead of getting press coverage for sociopathic behavior, this man needs a psych evaluation and treatment for his illness.

Tom l., a while ago you posted a definition of demagogue on this blog:

    demagogue

:a political leader who tries to get support by making false claims and promises and using arguments based on emotion rather than reason.

Clearly, Limbaugh is a demagogue, because he is a leader of the Republican Party, and he was using arguments that appealed to emotion and had no other purpose than to create outrage. Limbaugh could have use any example. Why rape?

More of the same false outrage of the far right...who if if they ever got in power would quickly ditch democracy for a an American Taliban theocracy in a minute. Rush is just a hate merchant who when is finally dead and gone, no one will remember. He says these outrageous things because that's what is needed these days to stand out among the numerous nasty rightwing commentary that's spewed on the airwaves and across the internet daily.

...so it's OK for Rush to rape the truth incessantly, spreading his hate and lies across the airwaves like every other TV preacher? Well and truly raping the minds of those gullible enough to believe him?

I'm sorry, but if you're stupid enough to believe a word that comes out of his mouth, you don't deserve any further consideration.

Why do politicians control the judicial branch? This itself is fundamentally wrong. When politicians nominate judges, the process cannot be clean as politicians will nominate judges based on political bias. This leads to corruption of judicial process.

In the history of the United States, more than 90% of all filibusters took place in the last 4-5 years. That is a shameful stain on Republicans who have put so much effort into making sure as little as possible gets done with their constant obstructionist policy fuelled filibustering. Is it any wonder the rules got changed?

BTW, Rush, could you remind everyone how much Obama's trip to India cost? You wilfully lied which would have cost you your job back in the day when ethics mattered.

When will the right wing stop with the hyperbole?

This is for JUDICIAL NOMINATIONS ONLY. It has no effect on legislation. It even has no effect on SCOTUS nominations.

Limbaugh is being dishonest and disingenious .... as per usual.

The filibuster rule was a procedure of the senate, rape is a violent crime and a felony. The bizarre thing is that limbaugh and his minions dont see the difference.

Simply put, the GOP put itself in this situation. Every minority party has held up and prevented some nominations from going forward, but past minorities, both Republican and Democrat, used the power selectively. This GOP minority has used it more than any other in the past.

Hyperbole. Pure hyperbole. Not unexpected coming from Limpbag.

This is for JUDICIAL NOMINEES ONLY. It has NOTHING to do with legislation. They even can filibuster SCOTUS nominees.

Anything coming out of Limpbag is hyperbole, misrepresentation, or downright LIES!!!
