Rush Limbaugh uses rape analogy to decry filibuster rule change

(CNN) - Conservative radio talk show host Rush Limbaugh used an analogy about rape Friday to blast this week’s decision by the Senate's Democratic majority to change the chamber’s filibuster rules despite the unanimous opposition of minority Republicans.

The so-called “nuclear option” will allow a bare majority of senators – as opposed to 60 - to approve most judicial and executive branch nominations. The Democratic caucus controls 55 of the chamber’s 100 seats.

"Let's say, let's take 10 people in a room and they're a group. And the room is made up of six men and four women. The group has a rule that the men cannot rape the women. The group also has a rule that says any rule that will be changed must require six votes, of the 10, to change the rule," Limbaugh told listeners.

"Every now and then, some lunatic in the group proposes to change the rule to allow women to be raped. But they never were able to get six votes for it. There were always the four women voting against it and they always found two guys.”

Limbaugh continued: “Well, the guy that kept proposing that women be raped finally got tired of it, and he was in the majority and he was one that (said), 'You know what? We're going to change the rule. Now all we need is five."

“And well, 'You can't do that.' 'Yes we are. We're the majority. We're changing the rule.' And then they vote. Can the women be raped? Well, all it would take then is half of the room,” Limbaugh said.

“You can change the rule to say three. You can change the rule to say three people want it, it's going to happen. There's no rule. When the majority can change the rules there aren't any."

Friday’s analogy isn’t Limbaugh’s first inflammatory comment about women. Last year, the radio host apologized for a comment he made on his show about Georgetown law student Sandra Fluke, calling her a "slut" after she testified about contraception on Capitol Hill.

  1. Oh Brother...

They are blaming democrats for this. Republicans play hardball with uzis and Intercontinental nuclear arms, then cry when they get pinched on the arm. They whine about whiners, cry louder than the crybabies they like to talk about. The rest of the western world is at LEAST American democratic for a reason. It's only starting to catch up. The only thing good republicans talk about is taxes, and then they fund the largest military in the world with near a trillian dollars and complain we don't have enough money. You know what? I hate taxes just as much as you, I just happen to hate all your other policies 50000000000 times more.

I must have missed the part where something inflammatory was said. Use of a rape analogy makes one a misogynist?

I heard what R. Limbaugh said, and agree totally with his analogy.

Another point I would like debated in the future: "How can a rule that deals with 60-vote majority rule, be caste aside and changed to make a 51-vote simple majority as Senate Rule?"

Seems to me, voting to change a "majority of 60-votes required", would in turn require a vote of 60-votes to change or overturn that rule. Am I wrong and why?

Limbaugh represents what is wrong with the Republican Party, and to a great extent, what is wrong with our society. Extremism to the point of non-function. Here he is using an extreme analogy (false one) to bolster his extreme position. And, while I believe he thinks his analogy is appropriate and true, he has no counterbalance from his own party to off-set his nonsense.

Apart from using shaky math and misunderstanding the meaning of majority, Rush fails to mention why this nuclear option was used. It was to make abundantly clear that the minority does not rule this country, no matter how much they wish they did. If America goes totally mad, and thinkers like Limbaugh gain power, the civilized world will roll its horrified eyes and run from America just as hard as they now run toward us. Where is the Off button on this clown?

Limbaugh and the Reps are just whining that the Senate Democrats finally grew a spine and voted so the Reps can no longer fillibuster every single thing the President or the Democrats bring to vote. Waaa. Wow, maybe something will get done now and they will get some federal judges that arent in the GOP's pocket.

Rape, why rape, this is just sickening. The problem is the GOP has not worked to get any of these appointments up for a vote, they are making the rules for the majority. I think 5 years has been more than patient. As for when the GOP takes control, well they fight there adversaries like its a foreign war, there hasn't been much civility, this was inevitable and its only going to get worse they way both sides are talking now. This isn't about who started it, it will take two to change course, and the GOP hasn't shown an ounce of movement to accomplish much. This was long overdue and being that the GOP plans to make the Dems regret this, the Dems might as well keep going.

I guess we have to keep in mind that when Raunch Limp-HA gets on the air, he's addressing an audience that needs to be communicated to with such base, foul, locker-room, neanderthal imagery.

Sad as that is, he's all too adept at finding the most disgusting way to twist EVERY thing he discusses on his show—I guess that's just in his nature...

    Rush is really bad at:
    Math
    Analogies
    Logic
Filtering the filth he generates in his cesspool of a mind before letting said filth leave his mouth
    Being a decent human being

    Also, he really hates women

Rush obviously doesnt understand the concept of majority and voting. You still need a majority to stop any filibusters (now its 51 of 100 instead of 60) but hes just mad Republicans cant stomp the brakes every 5 secs when the democrats want to do anything

This is about stacking the court in Obama's favor so he can continue his power grab. And his blindly devoted followers refuse to see how he is harming America. But they have to jump thru more & more hoops to turn a blind eye to his power abuses. Amazing. And sad. Republicans trying to check his power grabs are called obstructionists. Lol. But during the Bush years Dems were worshipped as heroes. Endless hypocrisy.

Limbaugh is an idiot. I am not going to comment on the rape comment beyond the fact that he is more than a few bricks short of a full load. It is offensive to use this as an example. How do people listen to him?

To the other part of his argument: His logic is so screwed up. Maybe he doesn't understand math. I don't know. But the four women would only need one vote. He has picked such a small number that you can't even break it down to a simple majority. His simple majority is the 60% that they needed.

I am sick and tired of both extreme points of view. They can't even talk about things. There won't be compromise and soon the United States will become irrelevant if we don't find those things that we can all get behind. What is truly sad is that our nation has not been unified, truly the "United States of America" since 9-11. After that horrific incident we spoke as a nation. Now they speak as groups with specific interests.

Unfortunately the old saying still fits: A man convinced against his will is of the same opinion still.
