RNC clarifies tweet that suggests racism is over

(CNN) – As the Republican National Committee has been working to expand its outreach to African-Americans, it now finds itself playing defense after a well-intentioned but unpolished tweet honoring the legacy of Rosa Parks seemed to ignite some backlash.

The RNC on Sunday, commemorating the day Parks was arrested in 1955, sent out a tweet to recognize the civil rights activist.

"Today we remember Rosa Parks' bold stand and her role in ending racism," its Twitter page read. Attached was a photo of a young Parks.

A few hours after the original tweet, the RNC tweeted a clarification on the latter end of the statement.

"Previous tweet should have read "Today we remember Rosa Parks' bold stand and her role in fighting to end racism," the tweet stated.

But the initial tweet had already sparked reactions from people who took issue with the phrase suggesting that racism has ended. Some people on Twitter started using the hash tag "#RacismEndedWhen," with many taking a sarcastic tone.

Also on Sunday, roughly around the same time as the original tweet, the RNC sent out an email with a message celebrating Parks. The statement included a similar line as the original tweet, but more accurately stated Parks played a role in "fighting racism and ending segregation."

"We remember and honor Rosa Parks today for the role she played in fighting racism and ending segregation. At the same time we rededicate ourselves to the causes of justice and equal opportunity," RNC Chairman Reince Priebus said.

"Rosa Parks was a hero of the civil rights movement," he also said. "On this day 58 years ago, the 42-year-old seamstress took a bold stand-by staying seated. Her arrest ignited a bus boycott that challenged the injustice of segregation and in turn helped to change this nation for the better."

After GOP presidential nominee Mitt Romney won only 6% of the African-American vote last year, the RNC has actively worked to change its tone and message to appeal to more African-Americans this year.

Just last month, it launched an African-American Engagement effort in Michigan, after starting similar outreach campaigns in other states, including New Jersey, North Carolina and Virginia.

    From the Article:

"After GOP presidential nominee Mitt Romney won only 6% of the African-American vote last year, the RNC has actively worked to change its tone and message to appeal to more African-Americans this year."

In what way has the RNC actively worked to change both its tone and appeal?

    1) Racism is alive in well – but primarily in the black community where black on white crimes have reached epic levels (And black males between 16-35 are 6% of the population but commit 50% of the murders. Fact.)
    2) The DCCC tweet that "Racism is when the Tea Party Rally to put the Koran Down" is idi0tic. Remind us which race Islam is? Islam is an idea, a totalitarian, supremacist, pagan ideology masquerading as a religion. Not much different from Naziism – Hitler did call Mein Kampf the 'New Koran' for a reason

Save your breath and time GOP...you will not be winning over any votes from african-americans, latinos or women no matter how much you try to dress up in sheep's clothing. Everyone knows what narrow-minded, intolerant bigots most of you are.

There's nothing wrong with the original quote. "Ending racism" describes a process, a goal. Let's worry about the sad state of affairs our economy is in and the people running it into the ground rather than picking apart some random tweet by the other party.

Wow, let the CNN bash on Republican party continue. And let all the sniveling whiny name calling misinformed liberals come out their closets. God forbid, anyone has a logical civilized discourse on government spending, the economy, healthcare, immigration, energy, agriculture, national defense, healthcare, or the like. Let just act like children and name call. That should really help move things along. And while we're on the subject of "racsim" 50% of White voted for Obama first and second time, 95% of Blacks voted for him both time. Who's racist? Clearly Black are far more racist than whites, so by your own logic since they vote for the Democratic Party, it must be the party that embraces racism.

RNC will no time soon get the black vote, especially when they are mix up with the tea party.

Racism is very much alive today. But, also, somehow the African-American community, as a whole, has been tricked into thinking Liberals care about them as well. This is simply not the case. Also, Obama has done a great job at being a racist and in fomenting racial divides. Just as Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson.

Yeah, you GOPs aren't racist at all, are ya? I can tell by the calm and non-racist responses. You know, because there aren't any from you guys.

Perhaps "racism is dead" in those all white, wealthy, gated enclaves guarded by security forces, unless your black and happen to wander into their haven...then you are just dead.

It truly is dead in that mountain top retreat that one of the GOP's beloved leaders Billy Graham resides and accessible by his private jet.

Then there is the on the ground GOP "leader", the radio blowhard using his blowhole to call The Pope a "marxist" because The Pope points out that the GOP "trickle down agenda" truly, only left a wet spot on the shoes of the poor and middle class.

So, just consider the source and ignore it, as nothing more than methane in the wind.

"Fact – Blacks do better when Republicans are in office. How well are they doing under Obummer?"

Have any substance to back this statement up or are you just as shallow as the comment itself? Oh, and nice name calling. Always refreshing to hear from the uneducated tea party wing.

If you know nothing about Rosa Parks, you could start with the awesome song (& video) by the Neville Brothers called "Sister Rosa". The song was a big hit at Tipitina's and around New Orleans in the early '80's. Probably still is.

For the idiot that made the comment about blacks to better when Republican are in office. You really don't know your history do you. When I was a kid (I'm now 71), my mother told me that Democrats were for the working people and Republican were for the rich. 70 years later and it's still the same. The financially less fortunate know which party is on their side and that's who they vote for.

No wonder the GOP racists think "racism is dead", as they are striving for "purity" within a pure white base.

    This was no miss-tweet.

Denying racism exists is the easy way out for white people. It's the way you try to avoid taking responsibility for your actions.

God's greatest contribution to society is making man mortal. This will be the most effective way of ending racism.

With all due respect.. IMHO it's perfectly justified. Name me one GOP Rep (I'm trying to keep it simple here) that has not used the GOP's playbook terminology and come out in favor of ACA – or even produced viable alternatives to it? Just one.. please.
Govt Spending? Outrageous, but nothing to do with Obama.. it's all Congress, and they are a completely dysfunctional mess with an approval rating lower than root canals. Having followed politics closely for the last 7 yrs, the amount of misinformation and finger pointing by the right is astounding. The sycophants and mental midgets all fall in line repeating what they hear on Fox or MSNBC as gospel (tho' NBC can be entertaining) while in reality both provide opine and not news. When you see what the rw trolls post on here, it's no wonder that your so-called liberals get upset, since it appears the right simply cannot engage in intelligent discourse. Read some of the CNN news items that have disqus!

Finally, a relevant story from the so called "liberal media" that doesn't involve bashing Obamacare and doing the do-nothing GOP's dirty work. I am so sick of hearing Republicans feign concern about people's healthcare.
