Congressman hosts gun safety event for kids on Newtown anniversary

(CNN) - Rep. Ted Yoho said the date for his upcoming gun safety event for kids was not purposely chosen to coincide with the first anniversary of the Newtown, Connecticut elementary school shooting, which left 20 young children and six adults dead.

"My thoughts and prayers go to the victims and families," the Florida Republican Congressman added, in a statement posted Monday to his Facebook page.

"Gun safety education and responsible gun ownership are important topics that should be taught throughout the year," Yoho continued. "And this event is an opportunity to help my constituents learn about these incredibly important practices."

The first-term Congressman will host the event, titled "Family Firearm Safety Event," in his district on Saturday.

"Please bring your family and kids for an educational event on gun safety, purchasing firearms, legal requirements and safety standards while encouraging responsible firearm ownership," the invitation says.

Yoho is a staunch opponent of gun control. After President Barack Obama unveiled his proposals and executive actions in January to combat gun violence, Yoho released a statement saying the President's remarks made him "convinced more than ever that we must protect our 2nd Amendment rights."

"While I agree with President Obama's message that we must curb gun violence and protect our citizens, disregarding our Constitutional rights are the wrong way to go," he added, encouraging the Obama administration to "enforce the laws already on the books."

"As a proud gun owner, I believe that our right to bear arms is a birthright and I will oppose any effort to infringe on our guaranteed Constitutional rights," Yoho continued.

His thoughts and prayers are with the victims and their families, yet he is going ahead with it anyway. Nice. Way to be respectful.

Since demonizing firearms has produced such wonderful results,
it nice to see someone teaching respect for them for a change.

The Newton shooter came from a gun owning family and was taught gun safety, rules, how to shoot, and how to purchase a gun.

Knowledge is power and I praise the congressman for holding this event. The only way to have safety and understanding is to educate.

I am sure a future Adam Lanza will attend. He was well versed in gun safety and its opposite as to others. This Florida congressman is an abomination.

Yoho is clearly a sick and demented man. To create an event like this right now is not only incredibly insensitive and in bad taste, it is simply cruel. But, hey, he's a republican and its Christmas time. That is their meme.

Education is the key to reduce violence. Guns are only one means of carrying out violence. Gun control is about controlling the population, not about controlling violence. Support education.

Gurgyl, if you're going to blame a group for the 2nd Amendment, it would be wise to blame a group that existed when the 2nd Amendment was written.

Shows a huge amount of disrespect and is a blatant smack in the face to the Newtown families. He couldn't find any other day to do this event? By the way, why do children needs to know gun safety requirements? They're not old enough to purchase them.

Is there no limit to the offensive behavior of Republicans? His event is offensive to begin with but to have it on the anniversary of the Newtown shooting shows greater insensitivity than I thought was possible. And then to insist on continuing when his offense was pointed out... well, he's gotta go.

how do you two think you have the right to put this congressman down? By the laws that the founding fathers set for us. The 2nd amendment was given to us by those few men over 200 years ago because they understood what it took to keep us free. I understand that newtown was a horrific tradgedy but what he is doing is education our next generation to gun safety.

You may be correct about teaching respect for things meant to kill. But I think we'd agree it isn't the responsible weapons enthusiast whi is the problem in mass killings like Sandy Hook.
No, the problem is the utter lack of respect for the survivors and family members to hold that event in that place at this time. It is what the NRA did after Colombine- it is simple cruelty by those who have small minds and just don't care. A bad combination with things that kill.

As much as I believe America needs tighter gun ownership restrictions, I support Congressman Yoho's idea of teaching gun safety to children. Hopefully, they will learn enough to not play with guns if they stumble upon them at someone else's house.

Wouldn't it be wonderful FoolKiller if the NRA went back to their roots as a gun safety organization instead of an industry lobbying front?

This man is a true PATRIOT. All children should be required to own at least one fire arm by age 16.

The kids are not having any problem getting their hands on their parents guns, and shooting to death those that they aim it at.
I guess this class will help those kids in attendance that have problems removing the safety .

Gurgyl. Please go back to school. The 2nd has been around way longer than the NRA. Guns do not kill people, people kill people. The US needs to look at the big pharma and mental health to get them off the streets. If you do not want guns then feel free to move to any country where they are banned. The 2nd is in the Bill of Rights which is not to be infringed.

Most children in Afghanistan learn about firearms before they learn to walk .
