House Democrat 'convinced' Ted Cruz will run for president

(CNN) - A House Democrat who joined Republican Sen. Ted Cruz on a congressional delegation to a memorial service for Nelson Mandela in South Africa said he has "no doubt" the Texas conservative will run for president in 2016.

Rep. Elijah Cummings of Maryland said Cruz, considered a potential 2016 presidential candidate, tried to dodge the issue but admitted that he had plans to travel to states considered crucial in the early presidential nominating process.

Mark Kelly: No movement on gun control since Newtown

(CNN) – A prominent gun-control advocate says children are no safer today from gun violence than they were a year ago when a lone shooter killed 20 first graders at a Connecticut elementary school.

Mark Kelly, whose wife, former U.S. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords, was severely wounded in a shooting in Arizona in 2011, told CNN's Wolf Blitzer on Thursday the nation's conversation on gun control has stalled.

House approves budget deal aimed at averting shutdown

Washington (CNN) - A compromise federal budget plan that would remove the threat of a government shutdown for two years won easy approval Thursday from the Republican-controlled U.S. House.

The deal worked out by House Budget Chairman Rep. Paul Ryan and Senate Budget Committee Chairwoman Patty Murray passed on a 332-94 vote and now goes to the Democratic-led Senate, which is expected to approve it as early as next week.

Ex-Senate aide appears in court on child porn charges

(CNN) – Sen. Lamar Alexander's former chief of staff appeared in court on Thursday after formally being charged with possessing and attempting to distribute child pornography.

Jesse Ryan Loskarn, 35, looked straight ahead and answered "yes" or "no" when questioned by the judge in U.S. District Court. He did not enter a plea.

Pelosi to Democrats on budget deal: 'Embrace the suck'

(CNN) – House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi told her caucus in a meeting Wednesday to "embrace the suck" over a bipartisan budget deal reached earlier this week that the House is set to vote on Thursday evening.

The phrase sums up well how her party feels about the deal, Pelosi told CNN Chief Washington Correspondent Jake Tapper.

(CNN) – Republican members of Congress want you to know they are not happy about having to buy insurance under the new federal health law championed by President Barack Obama.

"I've been forced onto Obamacare. My deductibles are double or triple and my premiums are up," said Rep. John Mica, a Florida Republican, at a hearing on Thursday.

Star-studded help for Obamacare

(CNN) - The White House is about to get some star-powered help in its efforts to repair Obamacare's battered reputation.

A new publicity effort led by Covered California, one of the largest state-based insurance exchanges, will employ celebrities, athletes, musicians and social media personalities to encourage a peer-to-peer conversation about signing up for health care.

Mental health reform struggles to get attention

Washington (CNN) - Despite the impending anniversary of the Newtown school shootings and national pleas for more talk about mental health, serious reform efforts are struggling to get attention. Case in point: just a handful of reporters showed up to cover the announcement of a major mental health reform bill in the Capitol Thursday. (Read about the bill here.)

As three congressman stepped up to unveil their proposal, they looked out on just eight reporters and nearly 60 empty chairs.
