Bob Barker says 'the choice is right'

(CNN) - Bob Barker is taking sides in a Republican primary for a vacant U.S. House seat in Florida.

The former longtime host of "The Price is Right" stars in a new TV commercial for David Jolly, who is running to succeed his one-time boss, the late Rep. Bill Young, who died earlier in October.

In the ad, Barker, who turns 90 Thursday, says "folks, when you get to be as young as I am, you call it like you see it. That's why I'm supporting David Jolly for Congress. I admired David as he worked along my good friend Bill Young, helping wounded veterans, protecting our seniors and children, and by standing up for Pinellas (county) with character and honor."

The spot ends with Barker saying "with Jolly, the choice is right."

Jolly's campaign says the commercial would first run Thursday morning, during the local airing of "The Price is Right." Barker is making a cameo appearance Thursday's program to celebrate his 90th birthday.

Jolly, who worked as a lobbyist, was also a longtime adviser and former general counsel for Young, who was in his 22nd term in the House and was the longest serving Republican in the chamber at the time of his death.

Jolly is facing off against state Sen. Kathleen Peters in the January 14 primary. The winner will run against Democrat Alex Sink, the former chief financial officer for Florida, in the March 11th general election.

Florida's 13th district, which covers most of Pinellas County and parts of St. Petersburg, is considered a swing district and the special election to fill out the remainder of Young's term is expected to be firmly in the national political spotlight.

@chieftrainer: "I wonder how many liberal heads exploded when it was discovered that a television show host who saves animals was not a liberal."

Probably not many, given Liberals are much more (and more accurately) informed than the average right-winger.

Look at all the Democrats on here showing their bias, hatred, and bigotry. Thanks, Mr. Barker. Your statement helped to shed some light on typical, liberal hypocrisy.

Yeah, we need more former lobbyists in Congress. They always have the people's best interests at heart. Uh huh.

No, Bob the price is wrong with the two issues that you espouse. For one thing unfunded liabilities whether anyone wants to admit it or not might bankrupt future generations of americans. Fact is Medicare is taking two-thirds more than preniums being paid like half of SS with a low worker participation rate and general ratio to fund it into the future. Stick with what you know which is nothing in the end analysis of this college grad.

And don't forget to have your politicians spayed or neutered.

IMO Bob Barker should stick to animal welfare causes, and voters should choose Alex Sink. The Young camp has owned that seat since I was in Kindergarten (I'm now in my 50s), and Peters is a loud mouth, self-inflated, self-important nobody who believes she's above the "little people" so it's well past time to pass the mantle. Sink shows up at events and actually listens to constituents instead of paying lip service in an effort to feather her own nest.

Just because you're old and had a successful TV show doesn't mean you know diddly about politics. Florida voters, do your own research and vote for the best candidate.

THAT would be the right choice.

Given his strong commitment to animal rights and other issues dear to liberals, I'm actually quite shocked that he would do an ad for a Republican and equally shocked that a Republican would take a chance having Barker do a commercial.

    +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

As someone who resides in the congressional district in question, I think have a pretty good grasp of the issues and the people running for the seat. So, what are your credentials to judge us "libruls"?

Bob Barker should stick to endorsing animal rights and getting your pet spade or neutered!! I guess an old man is entitled to his opinion and thank goodness it's just that, an opinion!!!

"Look at all the Democrats on here showing their bias, hatred, and bigotry."
Oohh, what's that, a page and a half?
Now go look at a story that is even REMOTELY associated with Obama and count the page after page after page after page of incessant racism and hatred.
You want hatred and bigotry? Liberals are NOT where it's at.

Geeze.. all of the angry comments. It's a commercial for crying out loud. From Bob Barker. And he's 90! And he is still making news! Good for him. :)

Of course, I have to add: it's Florida, so there is a guarantee of another "hanging chad" fiasco along with the unique methods of counting votes. lol

I like the people ripping on liberal politicians that were in showbiz before. Does Ronald Reagan or Arnold Schwarzenegger ring a bell? If Bob wants to support someone let him, if you want to be swayed by a celebrity that is your choice. A better choice in my opinion is to do your homework, listen to debates, radio interviews and pick the candidate that will work for you.

and if this "amurkin icon" endorsed a democrat, you'd come up with the usual right wing tripe..."who cares what some Hollywood type thinks?" Ask Gary Sinese, Kelsey Grammar, James Woods, or Old Man Eastwood, etc what they think and you're fine

The comments to this article illustrate why we have such a partisan divide in Washington. We can't be civil towards each other, so why would we expect anything more from the people we send to represent us? Bob Barker did nothing more than hundreds of other celebrities have done. If your vote is swayed by his endorsement as opposed to researching what a candidate stands for, so be it. For those on the left to attack Barker just because he supports a Republican (who is a personal friend of his) is childish, same as it is childish for people on the right to attack the litany of stars supporting liberal/progressive candidates.
