George W. Bush encourages Alabama kicker with letter

(CNN) – Cade Foster, the embattled kicker for the University of Alabama, posted online Wednesday night a photo of a letter he received from former President George W. Bush

"Dear Cade (#43), Life has its setbacks. I know! However you will be a stronger human with time. I wish you all the best," the 43rd President wrote.

Foster faced fierce criticism–even death threats–after his team lost to rival Auburn University in late November, essentially blowing their chances to play for a national title.

The kicker missed two field goals and had a third one blocked during the game. Alabama's coach replaced Foster with another kicker for the final play of the game: a 57-yard field goal.

With the score tied at 28-28 and with one second left, the ball fell short of the goalposts, resulting in a 100-yard touchdown return and a historic upset for Auburn.

"Framing this," Foster wrote on his Instagram, along with a photo of the letter.

Obama is writing him a letter right now describing why it is George Bush's fault that he missed the kick.

Bush showed you all that at times you do what you know is right. This is support for a young man plain and simple who was being victimized by irrational and immature fans who apparently live and breathe their college programs more than just life. Sad, but GW Bush will always be a leader, becuase he has the pair many others dont.

What an inspiration. It is nice to see someone of such prestege help another person get back up and brush it off. Heck people, its just a game, there has to be winners and losers in that type a game, it does not mean the Alabama players are losers, far from it. They had one bad day.

To any and all so-called 'Alabama fans' who would threaten a kid for missing a field goal: Are you so freakin' perfect that you've never been the goat instead of the hero? You've never had a bad (ok, really bad) day, the way the rest of us mere mortals do? As far as it being in the Iron Bowl, consider this; on those wonderful and all-too-rare occasions that Auburn wins, it is almost always by 3 or less. So you're always going to want to lynch the kicker who misses on occasion. You watch them long enough, you'll see they all miss sometimes. Now kiss my grits and ask my permission to let you rejoin the human race, you animals.

It staggers me how much some people hate Bush, no matter what he does.
I can say this, he has done a lot more for Cade Foster than anyone on this "soundoff" has done.

    Dear Extremist Obama Supporters,

You and your fellow extremist's comments on here are the reason Obama can't eat waffles without someone insulting him. Bush writes a letter of encouragement to a young man that is unfairly under fire and you come on here decrying Bush and the most evil person in history. You are just as bad if not worse than those conservative extremists you hate.

Allow a kind gesture to be just that. A kind gesture. There is an article about all the amazing work Laura and W are doing in Africa to combat AIDs and Cervical Cancer and you guys decide that is prime time to get in your obligatory Bush-bash for the day. Get a life or lose the hypocrisy.

Death threats for missing a field goal? My God that is absolutely insane.

I am very proud of President Bush for reaching out to Cade. Well done Mr. President.

WOW!! What an honor, having a warmonger X President write you a letter. I hope he is telling you that he is responsible for the deaths of around 8,000 of our military personnel and hundreds of thousand innocent civilians. Write Bush a letter back telling him that he should be in prison. Without the freedom to write letters to anyone!!!!!!

What is wrong with you people? The man writes a very nice letter encouraging a young man and you idiots can't accept it for what it is. For once, try to leave your narrow minded political snipes out of it. Try very hard to at least act like mature adults for a minute and show respect for a kind gesture.

I wasn't a big fan of GWB as president, but that's a classy move. If I were the Alabama fans, I'd be more concerned about Nick Saban's bone-headed decision to try a 57 yard field goal – with a different, less-experienced kicker – rather than let my offense win the game in OT. But hey...the kicker gets death threats, and Saban got a big raise, so I guess it all balances out.

Original draft read : Dear Cade, I once choked on a pretzel, so I know what it is like to choke. Don't worry, as Dick Cheney would say "Sometimes you don't it the target" Best regards, George

Listen, I don't think George W. Bush was a good President- quite the opposite, in fact. But the problem in our country today is that people can't separate the man/woman from the politician. Bad President, yes. Bad man? Not at all.

What is suspicious about this story is the claim that George Bush wrote a letter.

I have voted for Obama two times and will vote again if I am allowed to. I am a big fan of RollTide. However, it is sad to see the mental state of people, who can not appreciate simple kind act of GW for what it is. This kid who missed two field goals got life threatening calls, what a sad state we are in!! When a person like ex-president writes a an encouraging letter to the this kid, who jump all over and throw all this vitriol, sad, very sad, no wonder the humanity is vanishing in US.
