Spat puts conservative groups in the spotlight

Washington (CNN) - Club for Growth, Heritage Action for America, and Americans for Prosperity. They're three leading conservative advocacy groups that are involved in a rare public war of words with House Speaker John Boehner over a bipartisan budget deal.

Boehner on Thursday escalated his criticism of the organizations, which are vehemently opposed to the compromise struck by Republican House Budget Chairman Paul Ryan and his Democratic Senate counterpart Patty Murray.

New sanctions could 'shatter Western unity' on Iran, senator says

(CNN) - Hewing to administration desires, Senate Banking Committee Chairman Tim Johnson forcefully repeated Thursday what he had already said in as many words - his committee won't seek new sanctions on Iran for the time being, and no one else should either.

Administration officials have publicly tried to talk lawmakers down from acting on legislation that would impose even delayed sanctions on Iran during the first phase of a November agreement to curb the Middle Eastern nation's nuclear program in exchange for relaxed sanctions.

House budget vote illuminates GOP split

Washington (CNN) – Ever present but rarely so public, the rift between conservative and moderate Republicans over policy and tactics was on full display Thursday ahead of a House vote on the compromise federal budget worked out with Democrats.

House Speaker John Boehner escalated his criticism of conservative groups opposed to the budget deal, saying they lost credibility by rejecting the plan before it was announced and blaming them for pushing GOP legislators into the politically disastrous government shutdown in October.

Mental health pushed in Congress before Newtown anniversary

(CNN) – Just days before the first anniversary of the Newtown, Connecticut, elementary school massacre, a Republican congressman from Pennsylvania introduced new legislation Thursday that seeks to improve the mental health system.

Rep. Tim Murphy, who spent three decades as a psychologist before coming to Capitol Hill, said little has been done in the past year to "get those who need help the help they need," despite tragedies like the one at Sandy Hook and countless others that get less attention.

Senior Obama aide Pete Rouse leaving administration

Washington (CNN) – In the "will he stay or will he go?" saga, a Senior Obama Administration official confirms to CNN that, this time it seems, Pete Rouse really is leaving the administration.

When asked if this time Rouse was really leaving, a Senior Administration Official said coyly, "He's said many times that he is leaving. This time, people seem to believe him."

(CNN) – Cade Foster, the embattled kicker for the University of Alabama, posted online Wednesday night a photo of a letter he received from former President George W. Bush

"Dear Cade (#43), Life has its setbacks. I know! However you will be a stronger human with time. I wish you all the best," the 43rd President wrote.

Pro-Hillary super PAC picks up pace, opens doors to D.C.

Washington (CNN) – Ready for Hillary, a super PAC aimed at urging former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton to run for president in 2016, has increased the number and scope of fundraisers and informational meetings it is organizing, according to representatives from the group.

In the past four days, the super PAC has organized events in California and Arkansas and on Thursday, Ready for Hillary kicked off its Washington-area push with a low-dollar fundraiser at a swanky lounge on K Street, the hub of D.C. lobbying.
