De Blasio: 'We all cringed' after Obama told us about CO shooting

(CNN) – New York City Mayor-elect Bill de Blasio was with President Barack Obama in a meeting on Friday when the President received a note about a school shooting in Colorado.

"Well, the President said very somberly that the shooting had occurred. Obviously none of us had the details yet, but he informed the room - the note was passed to him and he informed the room immediately and we all cringed," the Democrat told reporters at the White House.

A student opened fire Friday inside a suburban Denver high school, injuring at least two people before turning the gun on himself, authorities said.

De Blasio was part of a group of newly elected mayors meeting with Obama at the White House to talk about jobs. But after hearing news about the school shooting, the mayor-elect said the conversation pivoted to a discussion about gun control.

"We didn't get into a lengthy conversation but the immediate comment from some of the mayors in the room was: How can we use our abilities, how can we use our local capacity and our bully pulpits to try and move forward sensible gun control legislation? Because until we do that there's too many dangers out there. That's what people were focusing on," he said.

De Blasio will succeed three-term Mayor Michael Bloomberg.

Another knee jerk reaction from an administration that does not enforce the.current laws. Let's systematically enforce the current laws and sentencing guidelines for those that are criminals not all the lawful owners.

@The Real Tom-I live in the real world and myself and normal people accept the fact that violence is part of the world we live in. You have chosen to live in a false reality where you believe that a new law can end violence. Its just like cancer, drugs, and drunk driving we do our best to hold it in check but no matter what we do these events will still occur. Go ahead and pat yourself on the back, but the efforts of you and the anti-gun crowd will not save any lives. You can`t get rid of guns or weapons, there are simply to many. So enlightens us with your liberal wisdom how you plan to end violence in the world?

"What were they supposed to do cheer"??????????

    "Another knee-jerk reaction...................."??????????

How kind of you two to show compassion. Look at the picture in the above posting. Kids walking out with their
hands in the air, filled with fear............and you worry about the "lawful" gun owners.

Think of yourselves first, last and always.

the pic shows that Obama might be talking about getting "shellacked" again, in 2014 – b/c of the failed ACA – - by the time the 2014 midterms comes around, better figure on at least 1/2 of the country without health insurance, or will have been "dropped" – - too bad democrats.....but when you make a bed & sleep with dogs, you wake up with fleas.

I hear this lame argument ALL the time, but that is as far ias it ever goes....
What laws are NOT being enforced right this minute, which will keep us from having another Sandy Hook?
Fact: Had Adam Lambert been pulled over by a Police Officer and the Officer were to observe the the assault rifle in the back seat of his car in plain sight, the Officer had no legal right under the CURRENT law to detain him or otherwise keep him from driving 2 more blocks to the school and begin killing those children.

Please save your lame talking points for your gun nut buddies at the coffee shop...

I wonder if they cringed when recently some sicko killed his family with a crossbow or when a Conn. doctor`s family was raped and burned alive. Just sayin` I hope they cringe at all violence not just the ones that involve guns.

I live in the real world and myself and normal people accept the fact that progress is part of the world we live in. You have chosen to live in a false reality where you believe that whining and crying and gnashing your teeth can stop progress. Its not like cancer, drugs, and drunk driving where we have made inroadsto keep them in check (that iIS progress), but no matter how much you fight and rail against it, progress will still occur. Go ahead and pat yourself on the back for electing a bunch of insane clowns to hold back progress, but you can`t stop progress as there are simply to many of us enlightened people for you neanderthals to hold back for long. So enlighten us with your conservative drivel on how you plan to end progess in the America?

Ya, because gun laws are working SO well to keep weapons from people wanting to do harm. Why not shift the light to mental I'll people or high risk? Oh but that's not PC so don't mention it! Some leadership...pathetic excuse of a government.

AND beyond crazy shooters like this, many more die in accidents from these "good guys with guns". The self defense thing is a rare occurrence compared to accidents. How did the Sandy Hook's mom fare with her house full of guns? Did she defend herself? She is dead sadly. And armed teachers with the weapons stored safely away are no match for a fully automatic crazy guy who wants to die. As I recall Columbine have an armed deputy at the time. It is not a hero movie.

And your false reality is that more guns will end violence. Banks have armed guards – are robberies gone? And Sandy Hook's shooters mom had guns – did she defend herself?

"C'mon dude. I know you don't believe that and it's pretty darn inappropriate. The NRA does not cheer gun violence and never has."

The NRA may not cheer gun violence, but they do not raise a finger to attempt to stop it or keep it in check. They encourage violence ("the only thing that stops a bad guy with a gun, is a good guy with a gun") as an answer to violence.
The NRA, before it was taken over by the corporations as a marketting arm, used to be a really good advocate for safe and appropriate gun owners. They are now just a tool.
I mean that literally and figuratively....

Does anyone realize that the state of Colorado passed all the legislation pushed by the gun control advocates even when told by the NRA that it would not stop criminals from doing this. But was only called a bunch of psychos and ignored by the current white house administration.

Wow! Now that I look at this photo again, I see exactly what you mean? Of course Obama and the Mayors are talking about the exact moronic drivel you somehow pounded out of your keyboard while listening to rush at full volume.

BS. Nothing sells guns better than reactionary right wing backlash in response to proposed gun regulation in the wake of a tragedy. NOTHING. The more gun violence, the more people feel they need a gun to protect themselves. As far as the NRA is concerned, this kid just boosted business for the gun manufacturers and dealers who provide the lion's share of the NRA's funding. Keeping you deluded and unsafe sells firearms. They know it and they love it.
