Insurers ease deadline to pay for Obamacare policies

(CNN) – Health insurers announced Wednesday they will give people buying coverage under Obamacare more time to make the first payment.

America's Health Insurance Plans, the industry trade group, said consumers now have until Jan. 10 to make their first payment for coverage retroactive to Jan. 1.

The deadline to sign up for insurance that kicks in Jan. 1 remains the same - Dec. 23 in the vast majority of the country.

Before Wednesday's announcement, consumers had to make the first payment by Jan.1 in order to guarantee coverage starting that day.

While they won't be insured until they make that first payment, enrollees will be retroactively covered back to Jan. 1 as long as they send the first check by Jan 10.

"The short time period in which to complete these steps, particularly around the holidays, combined with the ongoing technical issues with HealthCare.gov have raised concerns that some consumers' coverage may not be able to begin on January 1," according to a statement by the AHIP board of directors.

"Health plans are voluntarily making this one-time change to the payment deadline to help protect consumers from potential gaps in their coverage caused by the ongoing technical problems" with the Obamacare website, the statement said.

Good! December 23 was creeping up quick. Hopefully some folks will have some holiday cash to make their initial payment.

How does this affect those on the state exchanges? Cover Oregon set itself up for failure with an obscene 22 page application that is required just to receive a proper application packet. Of course they couldn't process all that paperwork in a timely manner, so many of us feel like we're getting screwed. When you post news like this, be clear about whether you are talking strictly about those applying through Healthcare.gov, or if the news also affects those on the state exchanges.

Good news. I do not know how Megyn Kelly (Fox News) will interpret this. This woman has a big mouth. Nothing positive comes from her mouth. Good, that people have already known what kind of a person she is after Santa/Jesus debacle . Is she on Koch Bros Payroll? Anyone out there who has any idea on this?

Resorting to name calling and ad hominens does nothing to support your statement; rather, it punctuates your profound ignorance. I bet you really think President Obama built the web site himself. SMH.

A woman in NC was complaining because she was told her healthcare would cost $13.00 a month, but later told it will cost $100.00 a month. She said she has not had health insurance for 12 years. Talk about looking a gift horse in the mouth. Some people complain about any and everything.

Insurance companies are going to spend $500 million next year to make sure people sign up for Obamacare. Evidently baggers have not gotten the memo that insurance companies are in favor of insuring people. What does the Fox say?

And the alternatives to Obama are? Geez, since he's term-limited as per the Constitution, I guess we have to see who the GOP will put up to suceed him. Scott Walker? Oh yes, the Koch Brothers' poodle. Christie? Just run those pics of him embracing Obama after Sandy, and he's done. Cruz? What has he actually created or established in his shoort public career? Paul? Not an original thought in his head, to say nothing on paper. Rubio? Can't propose immigration reform, then vote against it. Ryan? Betrayed rightie principles by not endorsing another government shutdown, and Newt Gingrich labeled his proposals as " Right-wing social engineering". Your list of propects grows very thin. Rick Perry? Ooops. Peter King? A former IRA supporter who has become reasonable in his old age. A list of real winners there, Pepe.

Actually, Pepe, the President has assumed responsibility for what has gone wrong: you just were never gracious enough to accept it. I'm sure he rises every morning thinking " How can I annoy that worthless blogger who keeps popping up on CNN?" If that is how important you view yourself in the grand scheme of things, I can recommend several very good counselors, or barring that, sign up for a drug trial that deals with obcessive hatred of public officials and narcissism.

This train wreck is fun on sooooo many levels. What should we tall about today? The incompetence of not being able to get a website to work? The criminal amount of taxpayer money spent on a site that won't work? The lies Obama amd his cronies told about what the plan is? The millions that lost insurance? The ridiculously low percent of CORE young healthy takers of this thing? Etc, etc, etc.....
The enormity of the debockle is simply amazing

Dan – Glad you are amused, as I thought most baggers would be upset that they are starting to lose the healthcare war. The Kochs and others spent $800 million to derail it, Republicans shut down the government to the tune of &25 billion, and guess what? You are still losing. Talk about a real laugher.

Gunny – You use a lot of big words for a baby talker. Can you imagine how well off our country would be if we did not give unneeded tax cuts to the wealthy, have to pay for two wars kept off the books, TARP, unfunded drug programs, $24 billion dollar shutdown, tax breaks to big oil? Let me guess, it's Obama's fault.
