What the next debt ceiling fight will look like

New York (CNNMoney) -- House Budget Chairman Paul Ryan and Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell said this week that Republicans will demand something in exchange for an increase in the debt ceiling early next year.

The White House, meanwhile, said it won't negotiate on the issue.

Repubs will have the opportunity to trim spending during appropriations, a process that has yet to occur in these last two congresses. It's up to congress to disperse the monies in the current budget. This is called the appropriations process. Doesn't anybody read the constitution?

It's their arrogance that really sets me off. They will demand. We need professional people in Washington who are willing to compromise to better the country not hostage takers and madmen. Hopefully, in 2014 most Americans will have had enough of this and send them on their way.

Keith, swap it out for a government class, this money has been agreed to already, to compromise again on something you've already comprised and agreed on, not rudiculous? Are you sure you went to college?

Considering tthe reps have owned congress for the last two cycles perhpas you should ask THEM if THEY'VE read the constitution, and WHY THEY haven't addressed anything but a few drops in the bucket pertaining to "entitlements" for the poor & elderly while protecting "entitlements" for the wealthy and so-called "job creators" who really don't "create" jobs, but close up shop in America and send American jobs to third world cesspools.

"Actually Lynda they would becorrect in that only their base LISTENS to them and runs with whatever they are selling.
Everyone else HEARS them and runs for the hills either laughing or shaking their heads in disbelief at the stuff they're spewing."

It is the "running and selling" that has me laughing out loud daily! Especially when the media picks up their cadence and adds a fairly large dose of trying to sell the propaganda nationally. I guess my only question is "do these people (media included) actually take themselves as seriously as they want us to believe they do ... enough so that they think we truly ARE buying what they're selling"?

    Rhetorical, my friend. Rhetorical.

Depends on 2014........and whether the people of this country get any smarter, about who they elect.........or if they continue to behave as though they are brain dead.

    @ Rick McDaniel.

Why would I vote for any of them if this is their tactic? They want to do government shutdowns to get to a balanced budget? I'm not thrilled with it, but fine, that is the appropriate place to fight over this. But what they are proposing here I consider to be a direct and personal threat to my livelihood, and they are holding a gun to my head (and yours, and everyone else's) to extract concessions that they should have extracted in the GOD DANG BUDGET THEY THEMSELVES JUST BLOODY WELL HELPED PASS!!!!

To even hear about this is absolutely infuriating to me, and when it comes to their idea that we are spending too much, I agree with them.

Considering the $24 billion – WITH A B – rightwing temper tantrum and the threat of a repeat performance in the coming months it's safe to hope the majority of Americans with more than two active brain cells have awoken from their slumber.

Doesn't anyone on the right have any morals? Conservatives just signed off on a compromise budget deal, and now not only do you want to renege on it, they act as if it is their divine destiny and duty, or something like that, to renege on the deal.

Because they think that they are on a mission from God. These Christian Conservatives would make Jesus weep.

My point was that if the Repubs really wanted to reduce spending, then all they had to have done was pass budgets to appropriate.

All Democrats and Obama want to do is spend as much as they can, tax as much as they can and then borrow as much as they can. They have no intention to EVER reduce spending. Their only answer is to raise taxes, and if they can't then just keep borrowing more to support their welfare state where 47% are free riders on the tax code.

the federal government wastes hundreds of billions in waste, fraud, abuse, redundancy and bogus "research". but the democrats protect every penny of spending for fear of their nanny state shrinking by a few pennies.

i guess they intend to run the country just as they ran greece, into the ground and bankruptcy.

    @Rick, Donna, just saying:

Then why didn't they address the spending in the budget they just helped pass? WHY? WHY PASS A SPENDING BILL AND THEN COMPLAIN ABOUT THE SPENDING?!!

You will have no answer for that, which is why you're back to talking points.

Them passing that budget was a huge strategic error. They are now just as tied to the spending as the Democrats are. They VOTED FOR IT for God's sake!

You partisans enrage me so much I can hardly take it.
