Obama signs up for Obamacare

(CNN) - President Barack Obama is signed up for an insurance plan through the law that bears his name, the White House said Monday, although the coverage is symbolic.

A White House official told CNN that Obama was enrolled over the weekend through an online insurance exchange created by the Affordable Care Act, or Obamacare.

The move was meant to show the President's support for the marketplaces where consumers can shop for health insurance.

Obama is among the 85 percent of Americans who receive insurance coverage through his employer, the official said.

Like his predecessors, Obama receives all of his health care from the military, with a much-publicized annual physical at the medical facility in Maryland.

"The act of the President signing up for insurance coverage through the D.C. exchange is symbolic since the President's health care will continue to be provided by the military," the official said.

Obama selected a "Bronze" plan and will pay a premium.

Obama did not sign up himself. His staff did so due to the "complicated nature" of handling personal information about the President, a White House official said.

The politically charged health law requires members of Congress and their staffs to either sign up for Obamacare or find another alternative.

–CNN's Bryan Koenig contributed to this report.

Boehner signed up on the exchange as well. I haven't heard any complaints from that tobacco smoking hypocrite yet. *crickets* I'm sure it's because his policy under the exchange is better than his previous policy.

    DM4O,

I prefer to call the law by it's full title mami: The Patient Protection & Affordable Care Act. I think when the media leaves the term "Patient Protection" out when addressing it is a great disservice to the uninformed and educationally challenged. That's the most important part of the law CNN!!!

Cry – After surviving an $800 million barrage of negative attacks from the right wingnuts, a 24/7 attack from Fox and Sean Insanity, a lousy roll out, it is still the law, and it is getting better every day. What you fail to realize, only 40% want the law repealed. Sounds like you are a bit premature in your assessment.

Dutch, sometimes it is better to remain silent and let someone think you are ignorant rather than open your mouth and remove all doubt.

The current cost for Boehner and his wife? They "pay a monthly premium of $433," said Boehner spokesman Brendan Buck.

The new plan for the two of them?

It "would cost $802 per month in premiums," Buck said.

That is an 85% leap. But, Boehner's wife is about to go on Medicare, so he will get an individual plan. That cost? $449 a month.

Boehner's office notes he will now be paying more for one person in the Obamacare exchange than he was for two people in the federal employees plan. Deductibles for the Boehners will jump from $700 to about $2,000.

Really? That's what you want to complain about? Obama himself has referred to the ACA as Obamacare. My goodness.

The only reason they were yammering that non-stop earlier is because it was known he'd be doing it today and they wanted to get the repetition of the talking point on the table before it could happen. $10 says we'll see some imbecile pop up once in a while after today who still asks "oh yeah, well when is Obama going to sign up!?!?!?! DERP!!?!?!?" Then someone will correct him so he'll wander off to another article to copy and paste some nonsense about Obama exempting himself and never having signed up for it himself, etc. Rinse and repeat.

First, it was SYMBOLIC as the POTUS insurance and health care will not actually change. Secondly, the POTUS DID NOT SIGN UP – SOMEONE ELSE DID FOR HIM!
Finally, he may have actually committed a crime because his employer offers insurance and in that case people aren't supposed to sign up (Read the law). As usual – a CON JOB

If Obama couldn't sign up himself because it is too complicated? That sure is typical of him run when it gets too hard to deal with. And he took the cheapest plan out there? Cmon Obama we know you have money stop being such a cheapskate. You are more than happy to financially rape the pockets of your citizens but can't dig deep yourself huh? I hate you so much Obama!

I guess you failed to read the line "[...] although the coverage is symbolic." – he receives free healthcare for life from the gov't already... he's going to pay for a 'bare-bones' policy... this means nothing except he supports his own agenda... WHO CARES?!?!?!

Bottom line, by insisting that Congress and their staff be treated differently than everyone else in the country, forced off their employer's health care plans because they're the only people in the country whose employer is now forbidden from providing them health insurance AND because they were forbidden from receiving a subsidy....all because the GOP/Teatrolls through Grassley decided it would be gat talking points to treat Congress and its staff different but then use the MSM's help to turn the entire thing on its head and claim that it was to make sure they were treated the same...all because of that...Boehner is now reaping what he's sown, taking what essentially amounts to a pay cut so he could spew ridiculous misinformation talking points to score partisan political points and thereby live out his spite towards the election of Obama. Forgive me while I fail to weep for him or any of the other GOPers/Teatrolls who brought it on themselves when it was entirely unnecessary and ridiculous for them to carve themselves out from the other 85% of the country that is receiving their insurance through their employer. As for your tears and Boehner's...keep 'em comin.

    @Dutch,
Boehner signed up and his premiums almost doubled. You can shout as much as you want. Just google it. In fact, it was a story on CNN back on November 25. You can apologize and admit you're wrong any time but I don't expect it. You're a 2013 liberal which means you just say whatever you want and deem it to be a fact.
