GOP weekly address: Happy holidays to the military

(CNN) – Republican Sen. Jim Risch of Idaho asked revelers Tuesday in the GOP weekly address to remember the men and women of the military in their holiday celebrations.

"As we reach for one of those gifts under the tree and untie a bow, I encourage all of us to remember the bountiful and most prized gifts we enjoy-the gifts of freedom and worship," Risch said.

"Our freedoms have been defended for more than 200 years by our men and women serving in uniform in the United States military. They serve in our homeland and in faraway places across the globe. Their sacrifices and those of their families allow us to live in the freest and most prosperous nation in the world."

Risch also asked Americans to remember the less fortunate.

"I wish each of you a very Merry Christmas, Happy Hanukkah, happy holidays of all kinds and all the best for a wonderful new year," he said in conclusion.

Too bad that republicans will hurt veterans by cutting food stamps, unemployment benefits, and reduced retirement benefits. When it comes to the GOP, talk is cheap. Our obligation to the military does not end when they come home.

Those are very nice words. It's too bad that Christian Conservatives have acquired the reputation for not understanding what "freedom and worship" actually mean with their displays of absolute religious intolerance. For them, it's literally a crime to be a muslim in this country.

The right does not recognize the entire 1st Amendment. They fail to realize that it defines freedom OF religion for the people, and freedom FROM religion for the government. Rick Santorum has even expressed the opinion that the 1st Amendment is wrong to separate church and state.

And try to remember this season that the only reason you are at risk is because a Republican has sold out to a corporation. That's why you are away from your families. That's why your friends have died this year. Thank a Republican.

the repubs haven't done not one thing to help this economy from the second worst financial disaster in this country's history. what would this country be like right now if the first 2 years after the financial disaster the congress had a dem majority. those first 2 years of obamacare and other legislation that the dems acted on like the bailouts and housing rescues, have given this economy 44 months of jobs increase, the boom of our stock markets from the crash in 2009, the housing boom, the coming back to america shores by big companies from overseas, etc. if it wasn't for those two first years of dems control in congress, we would be in a lot of doo doo right now, because the right wing doesn't want government to do crap where this economy is concerned. the obama policies of the first 2 years have been growing this economy and his obamacare is the main drawer of jobs in this country. if obamacare was to disappear or killed by the repubs, this country would slip into a depression again. what have you done for the past 3 years you've been in congress repubs, but cut spenders money, and allowing the big boys to invest in china instead.

    Hey Jim,

How about if you remember those serving by cutting defense contracts in your district and every other district in your state and fund troops at levels of pay that they no longer require the food stamps to eat and live that your party hates so much.

I to applaud our men and women in the military, I just think differently than you, I think they deserve a livable wage.

    Oh yeah, Merry Christmas...

Yes, just Republicans. Had the bill *not cut* veterans benefits, welfare, food stamps, and unemployment benefits, then Democrats would have still voted for it, but the Republicans would have voted against it. "Just tellling it like it really is."

And so says the typical liberal that can see into the future from their little bubble. Patty Murray, a Democrat, is the one that put the military cuts into the bill in the first place.

Odd statement given the GOP's desire to prevent equal rights in the United States, and their attempt to impose "Christianity" (a violent and racist version no less) upon a nation whose Constitution grant freedom of and freedom from religion. Is that really what our men and women in uniform are doing in Afghanistan? I doubt that.
Meanwhile, the cut food support to the poor and raises and benefits to our veterans. Disgusting people.

Typical liberal? LOL No, I'm a moderate who saw his personal business, along with an entire market niche in the service industry, destroyed because of misguided deregulation during the Bush administration. So much for recurring revenue.

Besides, you don't know who or why the cuts were made, anyway. I've heard different reasons, bu the most common was that old conservative philosophy of "no new spending without paying for it." The right wing wanted to curtail sequester cuts on the military. Republicans wanted to make up for it by cutting discretionary spending even further. Murray demanded that they cut something else in the military budget. And so, BOTH SIDES AGREED to cut some types of veterans pensions.

Damn these folks love to try & wrap themselves in The Flag & honor of others. W & Cheney & Mittens were Draft Dodgers. They might honor the Troops by being a little more careful before embarking on Military Misadventures. The blown up & burnt survivors SHOULD be an embarrassment to them, but in their Bubble Worlds, where, like them, their kids, Grand kids & Gated Neighborhood neighbors kids miss out on all of the Heroism.

Obama himself has referred to the ACA as Obamacare. My goodness
    -----------------
You continue to paint a not very flattering picture of mental capabilities when you fail to see the difference between referring to something under one name, and the actual name of that something.
For example we often refer to you as juvenile, or an idiot, but according to you your name is tom.
    Lol!....Sorry..no not really!!

Lol! What a tremendous post! Probably my favorite of all time and made me laugh out loud. Finally, some good old-fashioned ribbing. We need more of that. We take ourselves too seriously sometimes.

Merry Christmas to you and the "gang" :)
