Healthcare.gov withstood traffic onslaught this week, administration says

Washington (CNN) - The federal website where Americans can sign up for new health insurance saw a rush of traffic ahead of this week’s deadline to secure coverage by next year, an Obama administration official said on Friday.

Julie Bataille, communications director for the agency directing the website, said 880,000 people visited HealthCare.gov on Christmas Eve – which was the last day Americans could go online to select plans beginning January 1.

The website – which failed upon its initial launch in October and underwent a massive repair job in November – “met the mark and did exactly what it was supposed to do,” Bataille wrote in a blog on the Health and Human Services department website.

Previously, the administration said that more than a million visitors came to the website on Monday. The wave of clicks prompted the site’s “queuing function” to kick in, meaning users who couldn’t log on were given the option of leaving an e-mail address and returning later. Bataille said Friday that 129,000 people took advantage of the feature.

Initially set for December 15, the deadline for enrolling in coverage was pushed back to December 23 earlier this fall. Earlier this week, that deadline was moved back a day to accommodate individuals looking for insurance but facing long wait times.

And the administration later said it was offering a “special enrollment period” for people who tried to enroll in plans by the deadline but were unable to.

Since the website failure in October, enrollment in the exchanges created under the Affordable Care Act has lagged behind what the White House expected, though officials contend they were always anticipating a surge in sign-ups close to the deadline.

While the administration is touting the surge in traffic, officials are not expecting to release enrollment data for December until the middle of next month.

Last week, officials said they expected enrollment to drop off in January, with no looming deadline to encourage sign-ups, with another spike coming in March, before the date at which Americans must obtain coverage before incurring a fine.

I do support unemployment benefits for the 26 weeks that they’re paid for,” said Senator Rand Paul of Kentucky on Fox News. “If you extend it beyond that, you do a disservice to these workers. When you allow people to be on unemployment insurance for 99 weeks, you’re causing them to become part of this perpetual unemployed group in our economy.."

Rand Paul lives in a cave and missed the point that there are no jobs. When is Congress going to do something about that? Profit driven companies are going overseas for cheap labor and to get the benefit of paying no taxes if they keep their profits overseas. That, and having the wealthy pay more in taxes, is something Congress can fix. Giving more money to the insatiable military complex and NSA has to stop.

We are sinking into a third world status. I worked in a third world country for two years where the wealthy had all the power and wealth. Journalists could be bought to publish anything. A beautiful library was built but it could lend no books. The roads were in horrible shape and there was no safe drinking water, except bottled. The only jobs were cook, gardner, driver and maid. Corruption was rampant. There was no functioning government.

This GOP vision of our future is not acceptable.

'Rick McDaniel – The regime is lying to America.........going and coming.'

Allow me to remember that there are laws preventing a govt. employee or representant to lie on such issues. Sure, numbers can be revised and if it is found out that 'actually' the 'real' number is 860.000 or 885.000 you can't actually claim that the govt. was lying. But if the 'real' numbers end up being something like 400.000... then there is no excuse, someone lied big time and he or she or them must pay the piper...
It is not an issue of credibility but of legal responsability.
So I assume that you must have P-R-O-O-F-S of your claim, right?

  3. ObamaCares!

Here is what the "tea Party" hates- the Truth!
The PPACA (aka Affordable Care Act or ObamaCares!) is intended to do the following (and most of the provisions are already in place and active!).
    (1) Create a private health insurance market (Done!).
    (2) Hold insurance companies accountable by monitoring premiums (Underway and partially enacted!).
    (3) Eliminate pre-existing conditions; i.e., discrimination on the basis of illness or injury (less than a week to go!)
    (4) Reduce the deficit by cutting government spending on healthcare costs (healthcare costs have been declining for the past several years since the enactment of the PPACA in March of 2010).
    (5) Extend coverage to dependent children until 26 years under their parents plans (Done!).
    (7) Focus on preventative Care to reduce healthcare costs later in life (this is a key one- for every dollar spent on preventative care, the savings is several fold above that!
    (8) For CHILDREN, screenings for Autism, behavioral disorders, blood disorders, congenital and developmental disorders, hearing, vision, TB testing, and dental).
    (9) For adults, screening for alcohol abuse, blood pressure, HIV, and depression.
    (10) For WOMEN, screening for anemia, cervical cancer, as well as treatment for sterilization, OB-Gyn care, well-woman visits for pregnancy and breast feeding.
    (11) INSURANCE for the POOR!!!!!!!!!!! (Pope Francis would be proud!)
    OVERALL, GREAT FOR ALL Americans!!!!!!
    (12) The INDIVIDUAL MANDATE so that all will participate (Thank You Jon Gruber, Mittens, and the Heritage Foundation!!!!)
    (12) Elimination of Annual and Lifetime Limits!!!! (Great for Old Folks!)

    WHOOOOOHOOOOOO!!!!! ObamaCares!!!!!

I'm happy Obamacare withstood the onslaught, and everybody will get their health paid for in January, and everybody will get their $2500 a year savings, and the deficit won't go up one dime.

i wonder how much jobs did this economy created since the financial crash. mm lets see, minus all the automated computer systems and robots, that got jobs during this recovery, status shows we've gotten almost all the jobs the second worst financial crash took, now add in all the modernized companies with their robots and automotive systems. this economy actually created 4 times more jobs than what we are actually seeing. lesson folks, America and the world have changed, this is not the labor driven market that our grand pa and even fathers are used to. we are a different world now of robots and automated systems, i am still amazed that this economy still is getting so much human labored jobs month after month after month. so all those folks that think that jobs is falling from the skies, and that Americans should pull jobs out of their buttocks, need to move into the real world and see what going on. the jobs out their are more technical, and since the repubs war on the poor at every turn, including cutting educational training money, they are the last ones to talk about jobs. what about the 2010 mantra about jobs jobs jobs repubs, ow i forgot you guys trashed that mantra as soon as you guys took office, and started on the obstruction of jobs jobs jobs.

even worse, they blame the american people who believed their lies for not being smart enough to know they were being lied to. yes, we were all just too dumb to know what the emphasized period meant at the end of all those obama statements.
