Unemployment benefits for 1.3 million expire Saturday

(CNNMoney) – Michelle Marshall is one of the 1.3 million long-term unemployed Americans who will lose unemployment benefits Saturday.

Marshall, 56, has been out of work for a year, since she lost an administrative assistant job that paid her $44,000 per year.

She started collecting $624 each week in New Jersey unemployment benefits, but the state benefits ran out after 26 weeks. When federal benefits kicked in, she collected $521.

But Marshall will stop getting these checks next week.

Rudy ....same old bogus manufactured crisis...war on women...sure....immigration...sure, lets make it easy for them at the expense of the U.S. citizens ( more votes for the "Give Everything Away Party). And as for students...I've got two kids in college....Please define the "war on students". Wake up and smell the politics and the talking points!

BTW, you know those younger candidates that she's competing against? They ain't finding jobs, either, and they're fresh out of college.
    -–

Some are finding jobs but they definitely have the advantage over older workers like this woman. The fact is if this country had a REAL RECOVERY, both this woman and the younger graduates would have no trouble finding jobs. Obama and the Democrats are throwing out the usual smoke and mirror show when it comes to the unemployment rate.

And BTW, the unemployment rate in the black community is almost double the national average. That would be front page news every day if a Republican was in the White House. But the left wing media protects their guy and their party.

So sorry! But times are hard and only will get harder. There are some jobs, but this administration is fixed on part time employment more so than full time. The regulations placed on business large and small makes hiring full time difficult. One needs to take what one can get. Work ones way back to what was for them. Any job is better than none, especially when one no longer can count of hand outs. Self reliance is better than waiting for government handouts. Obama promotes dependence and fights ones independence to provide for self and family.

all she has to do is go to a fine dining restaurant & apply.....it's simple, all you have to do is ask anybody that works at a fine dining rest...(unless they opt not to tell you) the tips are better than most people think

With all due respect, there's a buttload of temping jobs, etc. out there. she needs to spend less time being interviewed by CNN and more time busting her butt like the rest of us middle classers.

The black unemployment rate has habitually been much higher than the national average. It's been that way for decades. BTW, it was not front page news when George W. Bush was in the White House. Why? Everyone has known about the problem for decades, just like I said.

So, how does one catalyze a REAL RECOVERY, as you put it? More tax cuts for big businesses? Cutting the capital gains rate down to zero? Getting rid of regulations, which only increases profits because it kills the jobs that support those regulations?

Which regulations would you get rid of, anyway? Michelle Bachmann, in her infinite wisdom, toured a meat packing plant when she was on the campaign trail, while complaining about meat industry regulations as she toured the plant with no hair net. She made an utter fool of herself, IMHO. What policies would Republicans put in place that would make a difference?

  8. The Democrat Solution

Give everybody unemployment checks, welfare checks, disability checks, food stamps, free cell phones, free housing, free healthcare nad send the bill to our children, grandchildren, and countless unborn generations of future Amercian citizens.

It is all about getting and taking as much as we can now, the consequences and the bill is somebody else problem.

Raising interest rates on student loans. Cutting public education budgets at the national, state, and local levels. and at all levels of public education. That's what I would call a war on students. Passing out vouchers so that we create a haves, and haves not, castes in our public education systems.

Raising interest rates on student loans.
    --–

Why is the government in the student loan business anyways? This is a trillion dollar debt bubble that is going to burst if all these young kids can't find jobs thatks to Obama and the Democrats. I guess the Democrats just want to pass out free money and then forgive it all when they can't find jobs. Just tack on another trillion to the national debt. And then blame others.

Cutting public education budgets at the national, state, and local levels. and at all levels of public education. That's what I would call a war on students.
    --–
The federal government spend more on education than it ever has. And what have we gotten for all this money? Higher dropout rates and dumber kids. Money is NOT the problem, or the solutiuon.

Passing out vouchers so that we create a haves, and haves not, castes in our public education systems.
    ---
Don't you mean create a have a great education versus have a useless education (public schools)? Why would you deny these children a great education and sentence them to horrendous and failing union controlled school systems? Oh yeah, the kid's education isn't as important as protecting the union suppportrers of the Democrats.

This is a deathly situation, I feel it for them. They should be given another say 6-8 months to straighten out as
Our Creator says "If any would not work, neither should he eat" (2nd Thessalonians 3: 10).

"Please define the "war on students". Wake up and smell the politics and the talking points!"

You know the cuts to education and the constant attacks and blame on the 'Teacher's Unions' and the curriculum realignment to dumb down students, and not lifting a finger to ensure student loan interest rates didn't go up... All the things the republicants like to do to ensure people stay ignorant and vote for the guy who will fight to ensure you don't get paid a living wage, yet will cut you food stamps and not extend your unemployment insurance. The guy (usually old and white) who rails against birth control and abortion, claimig 'a right to life', yet then wants to remove the same child and jail the parents after they are forced to have it (by his non intrusive government) despite the fact they couldn't afford it and couldn't raise it. Then the same guy villifies the 'government workers' who are now forced to raise these children in a beaucracy. The guy who will daily campaign to cut benefits to the poor, the old, the sick, the children, the vets... and the only thing sacred he will not cut (including his grandma's throat) is tax cuts to the rich.

    Do you need further definition?

She's looking for work. It's not that she's unwilling, it's that she cannot find a place that wants her to work for them. She would be best describe as poor. What does The Word say about helping the poor? So many choices, too.

    Proverbs 19:17
Whoever is generous to the poor lends to the Lord, and He will repay him for his deed.

Ol' Yeller – I think you forgot to add 'The guy who will then start a war, rightfully declared or not, against a country far and far away and will NOT send HIS son(s) and/or daughter(s) to fight in it, but those uneducated kids that will believe in his lies about the reasons of that war... that will only bring record profits for the guy and his 'dudes'...'
And yes, I am talking about Halliburton (or whatever is its name now).

Unemployment was meant to be a short term safety net. Obama and the Democrats have perverted it into a long term welfare program. It has been proven over and over the longer you give unemployment benefits, the longer people stay on the unemployment rolls. It is human nature.

Safety net yes, comfy hammock NO!

Look on the bright side Democrats.... When all thes people stop getting unemployment benefits the Obama will take great credit for the large drop in unemployment. Just like he has been doing all along.

Read the story. This woman is also burdened with massive credit card debt. She's has not been living her financial life very smartly. Instead of saving some money for bad times she has been spending it and living in the edge. Now she finds herself in a bind and wants a government bailout. A very bad case to show CNN.

The slow economic recovery should be proof enough that Republican Tea Party trickle down theory is a sham. The Republican Tea Party holiday gift to the unemployed is a lump of coal.

While I do feel sorry for most people unemployed, being they should have seen this one coming, they should've been prepared. When my dad was layed off and unemployed because of strikes at Caterpillar INC., he would only get it for 6 months, then have to wait another 6 months to apply. That is how they should be doing this.

She was being paid at a rate of almost $33K per year to be unemployed. That doesn't even count whatever federal assistance she's getting due to the mortgage she has. That's a lot of cash from the government.

Unfortunately, liberals believe in the give a person a fish rather than teaching that person to fish theory.
