Unemployment benefits for 1.3 million expire Saturday

(CNNMoney) – Michelle Marshall is one of the 1.3 million long-term unemployed Americans who will lose unemployment benefits Saturday.

Marshall, 56, has been out of work for a year, since she lost an administrative assistant job that paid her $44,000 per year.

She started collecting $624 each week in New Jersey unemployment benefits, but the state benefits ran out after 26 weeks. When federal benefits kicked in, she collected $521.

But Marshall will stop getting these checks next week.

Will republicans take credit for ending unemployment benefits? Sounds like a winner for them in 2014.

Ol Yeller...How do you clarify what you don't understand??? Its so amazing to hear all the whining going on in the liberal fraternity because the government won't help them out and in turn bury the rest of us. Take, take, take!

Apparently she was "fishing" just fine before she was laid off at the "fishery" ... yes, tom l?
From what I understand of the article, the "fish" are no longer biting for this 56 year old women.
Does she have other options? I don't know her personally, so I'd rather not mock her.
Hopefully for her sake, she will find employment soon.

I never mocked her. Not one bit. I feel for her. It would be very tough for someone in their 50's to essentially start over. Please understand that I am not against unemployment insurance at all. It think it can be very useful for a short period of time. However, extending unemployment benefits will not help this woman find a job. The longer she is on unemployment benefits, the further she is from when she was last employed and makes her more undesirable to hire. I have no answers for this woman; nobody on here does because we don't know her particular situation. All I know is that longer unemployment benefits, while perhaps making someone from the left feel better because they think they're helping, does not help this woman with her ultimate goal which is to find a job. All longer term unemployment does is make people more reliant on the govt. My analogy of the fish is not mean spirited nor is mocking her in any way, shape or form. Unemployment benefits, especially after a period of time, are damaging to the individual and actually completely counter productive. The overall goal is to make people need the govt less, not more.

"Unfortunately, liberals believe in the give a person a fish rather than teaching that person to fish theory."

Whereas, republicants rely on the old adage of, "Don't teach a man to fish or assist him in any way. He is on his own. I got mine and if he and his family don't have anything to eat because his boat sank in a storm which was no fault of his own then Tough! I don't care if people have ponds and lakes and oceans full of fish, those are their fish! They rightfully earned those fish and that guy can starve. Him and his kids. Liberal, socialist, lazy, ne'er do wells"
I think this might be in the Old Testament....

For 30 years we have been redistributing the wealth of the country from the middle class to the rich, and all the while the right has screamed about stealing and socialism. This, more than anything else, is why the Great Recession has hung on for all these years.

@tom l " extending unemployment benefits will not help this woman find a job."
Not true. Our state's unemployment office has free resources, training, resume reviews, classes, technology training. Um, that helps people. I have seen it. I know conservatives debate about only money but perhaps you should look harder.

    Facts are Facts

Look on the bright side Democrats.... When all thes people stop getting unemployment benefits the Obama will take great credit for the large drop in unemployment. Just like he has been doing all along.

    ---
Why don't youi try educating yourself as to how the unemployment rate is calculated?

    just asking

so where do the democrats expect to get the $26 billion to pay for this? the chinese credit card as usual? just print up another $26 billion of obama funny money? no mention of that in the article. wonder why?

    ---

Probably the same place we got the $24 billion that the Republican shutdown cost.

If the House GOP had shortened their temper tantrum to 15 days from 16, we would have the money to pay to these 1.3 million REAL, former working class Americans.

Darned right, cause, like, no other President ever traveled anywhere. Too bad Mr. Bush was MIA in Texas for 3.5 out of 8 years. Try reality.

So, the GOP wants to end unemployment for people out of work more than 27 weeks tomorrow. The questions I have for them are: Where are the jobs or the jobs bills you promised? Just what exactly do you expect these people to do?

You wouldn't be doing this just to keep the recovery from happening quicker, right?
    Naaaah.

Based on some of these comments, it appears the GOP think causing more misery to the unemployed will be a winning ticket....it want but go with it anyway. I, too, was in this woman's situation, and found myself unemployed in my 50s. Until it happens to you, you can't imagine the stress, frustation, depression, and shame when you are laid off and can't find another job.

    _________
How coincidental. Isn't that figure almost the same as what the GOP flushed down the tubes in October during their anti-American shutdown and fiscal cliff vote?
Wouldn't that money have been better spent on people instead of the GOP's stupid political grandstanding?

    Gunderson
    SO !,
How you like Obama Care now? The unemployment rate will be down to 6.7 Percent at the end of my first term or I will not run for second term. But, some you say, economy getting better. But hey Big Spender's no worry, a Billion here, a Billion there, pretty soon we talk real money. Soon we raise National Debt. Pay back in 100 years, no?
    __________
Well, Gundy, as long as the Right demands that the oil industry (raking in record profits) still needs $40 billion in "stimulus", the corporate, pro-rich socialism you guys love will continue to bankrupt America. Wasn't Mr. Romney who so famously declared "corporations are people too, my friend"? That's your problem.

Sorry, ace, but you did, but your biggest sin was that you also mocked the teachings of Jesus Christ.

"Unemployment benefits, especially after a period of time, are damaging to the individual and actually completely counter productive."

I will await your answer on JDay when you explain what gave you the right to determine and assign another one of God's human being's value and worth. I suspect the one about it costing you tax money, better be backed up with a Plan B.

Have they tried retraining or just collected checks so they didn't have to do anything.

I would and have worked at Wendy's to have some type of income instead of depending on the Government that what they want then they will suck you dry Obama and the Democrats(there voting base) keeps asking Santa every year for that so fay it hasn't worked but it will at the rate we are going.

    Tampa Tim,

Where do you keep getting the 24 billion from all the federal workers are getting a two week vacation at our expense the tax payers.

Did you forget Congress approved back pay for everyone of them after you take that out you don't even come close to a billion dollars and that's loose change for the Democrats to throw around.
