Cruz in legal process to renounce Canadian citizenship

(CNN) - Sen. Ted Cruz has hired lawyers to help him get rid of his Canadian citizenship, the Republican from Texas told the Dallas Morning News in an interview published online Saturday night.

"I have retained counsel that is preparing the paperwork to renounce the citizenship," he said, adding he expects the process to be completed in 2014.

His office also confirmed the decision to CNN.

Cruz has said in the past he planned to renounce his citizenship, but his latest remarks represent concrete steps he's taking to actively do so.

The first-term senator has said before that he wasn't aware he was still legally tied to Canada until the Dallas newspaper raised the issue in August, quoting legal experts who said the potential presidential candidate was technically a dual citizen.

Cruz was born in Canada to an American mother and a Cuban father.

United States law states that anyone born to a U.S. parent in another country is born as a U.S. citizen.

But, like in the U.S., Canada's laws state that anyone born inside its borders automatically becomes a Canadian citizen.

"Because I was a U.S. citizen at birth, because I left Calgary when I was 4 and have lived my entire life since then in the U.S., and because I have never taken affirmative steps to claim Canadian citizenship, I assumed that was the end of the matter," Cruz said in a statement in August.

Cruz told CNN chief political correspondent Candy Crowley at the time he would attempt to renounce his Canadian citizenship.

"Serving as a U.S. senator, I think it's appropriate that I be only an American," he said.

Cruz told the Dallas Morning News that the topic came up when he met last month with real estate titan Donald Trump, who was known as one of the leading voices in the "birther" movement that questioned whether President Barack Obama was a U.S. citizen.

Obama released his long-form birth certificate in April 2011, proving that he was born in Hawaii and largely putting to rest speculation about his citizenship.

Cruz did not go into detail about the meeting with Trump, saying only that the topic was not discussed in "any significant respect."

A spokesperson for Trump did not immediately return a request for comment about Trump's conversation with Cruz.

Sounds like the same argument that we get from Obama. I had no idea that I was born in another country.

Andrew, wrong comparision, since President Obama was born in Hawai'i. That is a U.S. State....you know, one of the 50 that make-up the USA. Obviously, you need that History/Geography lesson. Wow....you have to love ignorance!

Okay so why is/was Obamas citizenship ever was in question... His mother is a US citizen, so whether he was born in his fathers country or in Hawaii? The issue was only ever an issue because he is black. And here Trump has guided Cruz to deal with this issue so that it can't be used against him as they have attempted to use it against Obama. Disgusting!!!

'Hillary Lies, Four Americans DIE – Sure looks like the lefties have a pretty big birther contingent as well. Figures. All a bunch of hypocrites.'
Yeah, except for one little detail. Birthers believe Obama was not born in the US but in Kenya, they refuse to accept any claim to the contrary. We know Cruz was not born in the US, there is no 'birther' claim to be made.

'Jolat....Even though Obama was born in Hawaii, but lied about Kenya so he could get foreign student scholarships, which is why all his college history says he was born in Kenya and created that issue to begin with.'
You know that is nonsense right? That the whole 'foreign student scholarship' claim is actually a known April Fools gag from 2009? There is nothing in his college history that says he is from Kenya. I am not sure where you are getting that from.

'Margaret – Did Obama ever renounce the Indonesian citizenship he acquired from his Indonesian stepfather? He likely used that to secure a spot at Harvard and that's why he's had all his records sealed.'
He didnt gain Indonesian citizenship simply from his step-father being Indonesian so thats a moot point. And out of interest, what records do you think hes actually had sealed that you believe you would usually have access to?

As it stands, Cruz may be the only guy able to get us out of this mess Boy-King Obama has created.

Liberals loves to repeat the same lie over and over... the fact is Ted Cruz was born to an american mother Obama was born to no Americans as his mother renounced her citizenship while shacking up BHO senior who was a citizen of Kenya.

Obama could have been born in the Lincoln bedroom in the whitehouse, he may be a citizen, but he is not NATURAL BORN which is required to be president.

Get over it. Barack Obama's eligiblity and citizenship was certified by the Bush administration appointed Presidential Election Commission in 2008. Eligibility issues are settled before the candidate's name can even appear on the ballot. So if you still have the opinion that Obama isn't legitimate, then blame Bush. Bush's appointees certified Obama for the 2008 ballot.

As a public service and at great personal expense I conducted extensive research on behalf of Mr. Cruz. It turns out that renouncing one's Canadian citizenship does not require a team of legal experts. Got 100 metric bucks and a Web browser? To find out how easy, just ask your friendly search engine and they will give you the link to a Canadian government Site lurking in plain view.

Cruz bears a striking resemblance to Lyndon Johnson. I am wondering if Cruz's mother was doing it with Lyndon, got pregnant and hooked up with some Cuban refugee who wanted a green card. You can tell Cruz was born in CANADA because he is always saying eh.

Come Heck or high water this man wants to be president no matter what it takes. LOL!!!! The birthers are quiet on this one. Such idiots. Can you believe this craziness? Now that it will come back to bite them in the hamhocks they are quiet as a church mouse. Cruz will never be president and the GOP/Tea Party Birthers can take that to the bank.

Cruz wants to argue over the definition of "natural born citizen" because he can win that fight. The debate that Cruz cannot win is whether or not he ever applied for U.S. citizenship. Being born in overseas meant that he was a citizen of the other country, but also automatically ELIGIBLE to be a U.S. citizen.

But, Cruz has to have applied for the U.S. citizenship, which is something that he brags that he doesn't have to do. Wrong, and Cruz knows that he's wrong. That's why he's been putting up "automatic citizenship" smoke screen in order to make people argue about the meaning of "natural born citizen". The law is clear on this. If he has never claimed citizenship, then he is not a U.S. citizen. Period.

Wrong.....Arnold didn't have a mother who was born in the U.S.

Cruz (unfortunately) has a mother who was born in Delaware.....and Cruz was born AFTER 1962.

Because at the time that Obama was born, his mother was too young to AUTOMATICALLY convey citizenship to him IF he were born in Kenya.

Had she'd been 21 when he was born.....it wouldn't have made a difference.

Funny how the GOP sees a white CANADIAN as more American than an African American born in Hawaii.
Of course this is just a coincidence and has nothing to do with racism.

Funny how you and I are probably the only two people on this board who see Cruz as a white man who just happens to have a Spanish last name......thanks to his white, Spaniard/European father who just happens to have been born in Cuba......

Wrong. Cruz was born on foreign soil, which means there is no record of his existence in any U.S. records. That last part means that Cruz is not a citizen until he claims it, which he brags about having never done. Cruz is selling snake oil. There is no such thing as "automatic citizenship" when you are born on foreign soil. You are "automatically eligible" for U.S. citizenship, which means that you have to file the paperwork to claim it. No one can be a U.S. citizen when their is no record of their existence in any U.S. records.

THE REAL PROBLEM is simple. Cruz fails the 14 year citizenship requirement to run for POTUS in 2016. Cruz HAS TO FALSELY CLAIM that he automatically became a U.S. citizen at the moment of his birth, which is false. Otherwise, he has to file paperwork and then wait another 14 years before he becomes eligible to be POTUS.

The word salad about the age of Obama's mother is pure nonsense.
