Bill de Blasio: Central Park's horse-drawn carriages should ride into history

(CNN) - Horse-drawn carriages could soon be a thing of the past in New York City's Central Park after Mayor-elect Bill de Blasio announced plans to outlaw the popular tourist attraction once in office.

"We are going to get rid of horse carriages, period," de Blasio said at a news conference Monday, saying that the practice is inhumane.

MSNBC host apologizes after panel makes fun of Romney photo with black grandchild

(CNN) - An MSNBC host apologized Tuesday morning after she and panelists on her weekend program faced criticism for poking fun at a photo of Mitt Romney, his wife and their nearly two dozen grandchildren, zeroing in on the Romneys' recently adopted African-American grandchild, Kieran.

"I am sorry. Without reservation or qualification. I apologize to the Romney family. #MHPapology," Melissa Harris-Perry wrote on Twitter. Her statements were also posted on MSNBC's website.

Survey: The number of Republicans who believe in human evolution has declined

Washington (CNN) – A growing partisan divide is emerging between Republicans and Democrats on human evolution, according to a poll by the Pew Research Center.

Forty-eight percent of self-identified Republicans told Pew in a study released Monday that they believe humans "existed in their present form since the beginning of time." On the contrary, 43% of Republicans said the opposite, that they believed humans "have evolved over time."

Congressman: Don't let Sochi Olympics become Benghazi, Boston Marathon

(CNN) – Rep. Michael Grimm on Monday likened the recent bombings in southern Russia to the security threats leading up to the deadly 2012 attack on a U.S. compound in Benghazi, Libya, as well as red flags ahead of the Boston Marathon bombings.

As the world prepares for the Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia in less than six weeks, the Republican congressman from New York said "we cannot sweep these threats under the rug, like we did with Benghazi or the warnings from Russia on the Tsarnaev brother behind the Boston Marathon bombing."

Retiring: Top official who oversaw Obamacare website

(CNN) – The person tasked with overseeing the development of HealthCare.gov is retiring, the administrator of the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services said Monday.

The departure of Michelle Snyder, the chief operating officer at CMS who's been in public service for 41 years, comes a few months after the bungled launch of the federal health care insurance website.

Poll: Clinton, Obama, most admired

(CNN) - Talk about a streak.

Hillary Clinton is the most admired woman among Americans for the 12th-straight year, according to a national poll released Monday by Gallup.

And for the sixth straight year, the survey indicates President Barack Obama ranks as the most admired man.

Billionaire GOP donor dies at 82

(CNN) – Harold Simmons, a Texas billionaire, philanthropist, and major GOP donor, died Saturday. He was 82.

His death was confirmed by Texas Gov. Rick Perry, Lt. Gov. David Dewhurst, and state Attorney General Greg Abbott, in separate statements.

CNN Poll: Afghanistan war arguably most unpopular in U.S. history

Washington (CNN) – Support for the war in Afghanistan has dipped below 20%, according to a new national poll, making the country's longest military conflict arguably its most unpopular one as well.

The CNN/ORC International survey released Monday also indicates that a majority of Americans would like to see U.S. troops pull out of Afghanistan before the December 2014 deadline.
