Supreme Court asked to permit same-sex marriage in Utah

(CNN) - Lawyers for a group of gay and lesbian couples in Utah have asked the Supreme Court to allow same-sex marriages to continue in the state, following a federal judge's ruling that found a law there banning the practice unconstitutional.

Justice Sonia Sotomayor issued an emergency injunction on Tuesday, but was expected to issue an order as early as Friday afternoon on whether to grant the state's request for an injunction to temporarily halt same-sex unions.

There they go again. The hypocrites just love to deny religious freedom to people who do not share their beliefs. They don't believe in the 1st Amendment, not at all. You can only have freedom of religion, just as long as you are a Christian conservative. They want government to tell control how people live their own lives, define which pursuits of happiness are correct and which are not.

I'm sure the people who wanted to get married have probably already done so. An injunction will be futile. Utah needs to be more concerned on why the Nest Nile has killed 27 bald eagles. They may have an epidemic on their hands.

Rudy, it's not a 1st Amendment right issue. The briefs filed don't make any reference to it. It would be the 5th & 14th (for) against the 10th (against)

@ Rudy, who really cares who marries who, as far as hypocrites look to the left. Obama and Plugs Biden have flip flopped on darn near ever issue, not saying the others don't, but cmon you cant be that slow. They say what will do them the most good at that time. Quit blaming everyone else for Bammys lack of leadership.

Smitty – There you go again with those patented bagger lies. Slow thinking seems to be one of your better qualities.

That's what they might argue in court, but that's not what the conservative politicians and right wing pundits argue to the public. "God defines marriage as a union between a man and a woman." It's all about their religious values. The politicians and pundits could care less who marries who. All that they want are the campaign donations and ad revenue.

This is a religious group trying to get the Federal Government to let them deny personal freedom to someone by telling them what they are doing in private is illegal.

“Because religious belief, or non-belief, is such an important part of every person’s life, freedom of religion affects every individual. State churches that use government power to support themselves and force their views on persons of other faiths undermine all our civil rights. " Thomas Jefferson

More importantly, I am waiting for the day the goat or goldfish etc. can say "I do", NOW that will be newsworthy!

did our government exist before religion and the definition of marriage or did the definition of marriage and religion pre-date our government? obviously, religion and the definition of marriage pre-date our government so the government has no right to trample on religion and the pre-existing definition of marriage in order to suit the political needs of those in power.

gays can do whatever they want with themselves. but two gays does not a marriage make. what else will the government choose to refine in pursuit of the political whim of the day? stay tuned... i'm sure the looney left that simply hates religion, has something else waiting in the wings.

The irony of this is unbelievable considering that the Mormon Church advocated polygamy and lived "under the principle" less than a 124 years ago. They argued to strike down the Bigamy Acts of the time based on the First and fourth Amendments. God had ordained polygamy they said...now God has ordained one man and one woman. Simply amazing.

Tim, do you always have to stoop to personal insult to state your opinion? What has Smitty done to you? You invite attacks by your (unfailing) nastiness.

Don't worry about it. Seeing how a goat, or a goldfish, cannot sign a mariage license, then I don't think you need to trouble and concern yourself too much about that possiblity. As far as siblings getting married goes, as far as I'm concerned that is between them and their God, if they have one. If their God permits it, then the 1st Amendment says that I am powerless to stop it... ...and so is the government equally powerless.

One thing that many people on the right fail to realize is that "freedom of religion" also means "freedom from religion", too.

Hey if that is your thing, form a movement and spend the years and work like the gay community has. See if you gain acceptance. Good luck!

I suggest that you go read the 1st Amendment. Go find out what THE LAW says about freedom of religion. It says you can have yours, I can have mine, they can have theirs, or lack of it. Stop trying to use government to impose your belief systems.
