ENZI SAYS THE CHENEYS ARE IN HIS PRAYERS AFTER LIZ CHENEY ABANDONS SENATE BID TO COPE WITH FAMILY HEALTH ISSUES… SEN. MIKE ENZI, R-WYOMING, IN AN INTERVIEW WITH CNN: “I appreciate that Liz gave me a call and we had a brief conversation. I'm leaving the details up to her. My wife and I do believe that family comes first, and think that respect her decision on that. She's in our prayers, she and her family are in our prayers. I'm going to continue to campaign. I want to be reelected to this office. It's a critical time for our country and I'm positioned to be able to do the job."

CNN’s Ted Barrett reports, “a razor close but uncertain outcome” is expected Monday on a key procedural vote in the Senate on extending benefits for the long-term unemployed, according to senior aides from both parties.
“The vote, expected about 6 p.m. ET, is whether to take up a bill to extend those benefits for three months. All 55 members of the Democratic caucus are expected to vote in favor but it remains unclear if enough Republicans will join them to get the 60 votes required to succeed.
… Democrats see themselves in a win-win position with Monday’s vote. They could build momentum for the bill if Republicans back it; they get a political weapon if Republicans don’t.
One non-political item factored into the vote count Monday. Weather-related flight delays threatened the travel of numerous senators but it was not clear how many might miss the vote.”

TUESDAY’S AGENDA SETTER: Si, SE PUEDE: Gov. Chris Christie will hold a ceremonial bill signing on the New Jersey Dream Act, and deliver remarks at a school in Union City, NJ, Tuesday at 11:15 a.m. ET. CNN’s Peter Hamby who will be at the event, sets the stage: “Having won re-election last November with a majority of Hispanic voters, Christie's support for the so-called tuition equality bill is another notch in his belt as he cultivates an image as a Republican who can appeal to independent voters and nontraditional constituencies. He is, his supporters believe, a GOP candidate who can actually win a national election. But in the hothouse context of a Republican primary, which he must win to get to a national election, signing the tuition bill seems like yet another example of Christie unfurling a giant middle finger to the very voters whose support he will need once the presidential race begins in earnest this November.” FULL STORY: http://www.cnn.com/2014/01/06/politics/christie-immigration-2016/index.html?hpt=po_c2

THE BUZZ: CARNEY DEBUTS NEW BEARD: Things looked a little different at the White House Monday. The formerly clean-shaven Press Secretary Jay Carney returned from vacation, unveiling new stubble at the press briefing, much to the delight of the White House press corps who teased the spokesman for his more trendy look.

MARKET WATCH: U.S. stocks end slightly lower as investors tread water in the run up to the December jobs report.

The political bites of the day

- Wyoming Republican Party: Cheney is a ‘stalwart supporter’ -
THE WYOMING REPUBLICAN PARTY IN A STATEMENT: “The Wyoming Republican Party wishes the best to Liz Cheney and her family as they deal with difficult family health issues. Liz has been a stalwart of our party raising hundreds of thousands of dollars for our candidates and county parties. Liz is a rising star in Wyoming and national politics and we look forward to her return when the time is right for her and her family.”

- Pro-Enzi super PAC calls Cheney bid a “fool’s errand” all along -
‘WYOMING’S OWN’ SUPER PAC CO-FOUNDER BILL CUBIN IN A STATEMENT TO TALKING POINTS MEMO: "I am happy [that] Mike Enzi is going to be re-elected … I also hope whatever medical issue came up gets resolved quickly with a good outcome. I respect Liz’s decision, but she was on a fool’s errand anyway so it looks like everyone wins; Liz’s family, Mike Enzi, and Wyoming. Now, if the Denver Broncos would just win the Super Bowl, you couldn’t get a better start to the year."

- King: Rand Paul is creating hysteria -
REP. PETER KING, R-NEW YORK, REACTING TO SEN. RAND PAUL’S LAWSUIT OVER NSA OVERREACH ON “MORNING JOE”: “Rand Paul is creating this hysteria … He’s trying to create all this paranoia that the NSA is spying on all Americans … He’s playing on some sort of scaremongering, isolationism. Rather than using intelligent arguments as people could well do, he’s resorting to fear. He’s appealing to the lowest common denominator

- Kerry: No boots on the ground -
SECRETARY OF STATE JOHN KERRY IN A STATEMENT TO THE PRESS IN JERUSALEM ON SUNDAY: “We are not, obviously, contemplating returning. We're not contemplating putting boots on the ground. This is their fight, but we're going to help them in their fight.”

TRIVIA ANSWER from @sarafischer

In August 2008 Liz Cheney urged Dick Cheney help her to get his granddaughters access to meet the Jonas Brothers while they were taping a public service announcement at the White House.

“Trust me,” she told the former Vice President, “If you get your granddaughters a meeting with the Jonas Brothers, they’ll think you’re the coolest grandfather in history.”

Cheney, who wrote about the request in his memoir “In My Time,” explains that his daughter Liz called him and begged him to call the first lady’s office, after her request for access to the closed-set event fell through. The next day, Cheney toured his granddaughters and the Jonas Brothers through the West Wing. He later described the teen heartthrobs as “polite young men.”

Eric Cantor announced that the House of Representatives will only be in session for 97 days before th November election. What a terrible group of welfare abusers these wingnuts have become. The taxpayers pay these idiots $2000 a day to be on vacation 250 days a year.

Working only a hundred days a year, while making almost $200,000 is $2000 a day for work. If you look at it another way and you take all 365 days, then congress gets $500 every single day no matter what they are doing. Does that help?
