Christie won Fort Lee

(CNN) - It seems New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie didn't need the backing of Democratic Mayor Mark Sokolich of Fort Lee after all.

Christie carried Fort Lee in his landslide re-election victory last November over little known Democratic state Sen. Barbara Buono.  According to election results on the Bergen County Clerk's website, the Republican governor and likely 2016 GOP presidential contender grabbed 3,735 votes in Fort Lee, to Buono's 2,941. Democratic voters greatly outnumber their Republican counterparts in the borough.

E-mails emerged on Wednesday allegedly from Christie aides that bolster the argument by Democrats that access lane closures from Fort Lee, New Jersey to the George Washington Bridge last September, which sparked a major controversy, were part of a political push back against Sokolich, who declined to endorse Christie's re-election bid last year. Christie's administration originally claimed the lane closures were a result of an incompetent traffic study, not an act of political retribution.

Christie's re-election team actively sought out the endorsements of Democratic officials in its push to win a major gubernatorial victory as a prelude or launching pad to any 2016 White House bid.

There was no response from Christie's office for some seven hours after the story broke on Wednesday morning, but the Governor later in the day put out a statement saying "what I've seen today is unacceptable," adding that he was "misled by a member of his staff." Christie insisted multiple times over the past couple of months that he knew nothing about any political vendetta against the Democratic Mayor of Fort Lee, who refused to endorse Christie as he ran for re-election last year.

Christie holds a news conference on the controversy at 11 a.m. ET Thursday.

Yeah, and I'm sure there's quite a bit of buyer's remorse happening this morning.

Yes, he won the election- including Fort Lee- which makes it all the more mystifying that he undertook the role of the punisher- and makes it all the more disgusting that he was willing to see the citizens of a town pubnished with gridlock.

He won reelection because he had several things in his favor. The first is name recognition being the incumbant. The second is that he had a huge amount of money to run ads that bashed Buono with misleading information. Third is that Buono didn't have the support from the Democratic leaders to raise the money or her name recognition. I am sure that there were members of the RGA supplying Christie's campaign with money and ads of their own.

Got to hand it to him. He's a bigger liar than I thought.
Yes, he might have 65,000 people working under him but this happened in HIS office with those closest to him.
    Sorry governor, but YOU LIE!
He goes to the gym in the morning? Could have fooled me. He's already lied about his lap band surgery and he was "sick" for a few days back in November or December. Doing what? Skin tightening?

So says the Obamadroid that totally ignores the 20 times Obama didn't know anything about anything in any of the Obama adminstration scandals.

If the election were held today, he'd probably lose. Anyone doing any polling on that?

Give up the Anti-Obama distractions for a day, Donna. Today is Christie's day to shine in the spotlight. He deserves all the attention. Indeed, he LIVES for such attention.

What's up with the photo accompanying this article? It looks like christie is about to throw a punch, and he's pointing at his intended target.

Where are all the Christie kook-aid drinkers? For all the Obama bashers stating he lies for not knowing what his staff does on a daily basis, FYI hypocrites, Obama staff is a little bit bigger than Christie's staff. So if Christie doesn't have time to micro-manage his staff on a daily basis you better believe Obama doesn't have time to micro manage his staff.

Doesn't this mean there would be absolutely no personal motivation to punish Ft Lee ? I think so.

The real smoking gun is Kelly's email. Why would an assistant staffer order the head of the Port Authority, who just happens to be a childhood friend of Christie, to do something that is highly unusual without authorization, or directions, from someone above her pay grade?

According to Christie, that's what we are supposed to believe. That his staffers and appointees have usurped his authority, disregarded the law, and did it all behind his back without his knowledge. Never mind the contradictory statements that have been coming out of Christie's own mouth. Christie first told us that it was a traffic study before he just suddenly realzied that didn't know anything at all about it. Yeah, right.

Obama didn't know what one of his direct reports, a cabinet secretary, responsible to rolling out his signature (and only) "achievement" that affects every single American citizen and their healthcare plan and comprises ONE SIXTH of our economy, was doing. Yes, I'd call that total incompetence or the sign he really doesn't care to do his job.

Christie wasn't aware that some idiot was pullinbg some stupid stunt. Not even in the same league.

"Bridgegate" happened in September. christie was reelected in November before the truth bubbled to the surface. I wonder how many Fort Lee citizens would have voted for him if the facts had been revealed prior to his reelection.

peoples lives where at stake. Typical republican politics. 47% and counting. Even if Christie was not directly involved it shows the mentality of the repos backing him and working for him. No reguard for the people at all.

Just looks like another day of NJ style politics...... I wonder if any knees were broken.... Christy knew. He's a big liar and the media are constantly covering for him. Especially good ole Foxlite.

Nothing but a bunch of hypocrites here. They expect the POTUS to know everything going on with his HUGE staff, while Christy doesn't.

"so you have proof that christie did this?"

I'll be first to say there is yet to be any concrete proof of a direct link to Christie. There is proof, however, of some of the bad actors involved and proof that it was indeed politically motivated retaliation of some sort. That those actors are in his closets circle of staff and aides is circumstantial evidence that he knew about it, and certainly bodes ill for him staying high and dry, but I won't use the word proof for it yet. I can wait and see. No need to rush to judgment. It is what it is and I don't need to shout about elephants hiding in the strawberry patch the way the GOP/Teatrolls have done to Obama.

Stupid stunt aside, we're supposed to beleive that "some idiot" on Christie's staff was ordering around the head of the Port Authority of NY&NJ without his consent. That would be like Jay Carney emailing the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs and ordering a punitive military strike somewhere.....and doing so in coded language!

Agreed. The real kicker is that her "time for some traffic" email was responded to with "GOT IT." It was clearly understood as a directive, not just, for example, taking some glee in the coincidence that Fort Lee was going to have a few bad traffic days. It was relayed and received as though it was orders.

I like(d) Christie, he's one of the few Republicans out there now that I though I could vote for in 2016. But anyone that believes this crap was going on in his own office without his knowledge is pretty naive. And if it was that's even scarier.

Anyone who is expert in reading body language will know for sure as I do, that Christie was lying. What he said at the end: "I want to work together republicans and Dems, Independents" that was totally to cover the lies and switch peoples mind who think bad about him now. That was the technique he used. Talking about working together was irrelevant to the issue – bridge-gate.
