Poll: Percentage of liberals on the rise, but still trails conservatives

(CNN) - While more Americans continue to identify as conservatives rather than liberals, new numbers by Gallup indicate that the percentage who label themselves themselves as liberals is at a new high.

Twenty-three percent of Americans identified themselves as liberals last year, up a percentage point from 2012 and four points over the past decade, and its the highest level since Gallup started regularly measuring ideology in the current format in 1992.

But that's still far below the 38% who identified themselves as conservatives in 2013, which was down a point from the previous year. Thirty-four percent labeled themselves as moderates, also down a point from 2012.

"The rise in liberal identification has been accompanied by a decline in moderate identification," says a release by Gallup.

Gallup says their 2013 results are based on more than 18,000 interviews from 13 separate polls they conducted last year.

The conservatives are made up mostly of gullible people, those who believe edited sound bites and bumper stickers. Without them, there would be no Fox, Hannity, or Limbaugh. Conservatives gave us the first income inequality of the 1890s, the Great Depression, and the Great Recession of 2008. Unnecessary war, job loss, and decaying infrastructure are the end result of conservatism.

That is the most ridiculous statement I have seen.

Liberals have become the majority. They are mean, criminal, non-religious, and have no ethics, nor are they law abiding.

They are only interested in one thing.......socialistic existence, where they don't have to WORK.

Poverty is also on the rise. Coincidence?
Why work when the government will give you "free" stuff (food stamps, phones, healthcare, housing)? Let those suckers who actually work foot the bill.

  4. Name jk. Sfl. GOP CRUZ lee&rubio 24billion dallar LOSS of your tax money conservatives, the garbage of America.

Most people when asked this question, would think on a certain issue, like , do I want my taxes raised and answer no, which is probably a conservative answer. But today , a conservative is considered a GOP teaparty extremest anti goverment fool, so this question and poll are misleading and false. You will see in the next election when the dems hand the extremest a record loss for their obstruction and incompetence!!!!!!

This poll seems to completely contradict the one that came out the other day that said more people identified themselves as independents than either as a Democrat or as a Republican. The numbers in this poll are almost completely upside down from the previously reported poll. The previous poll had Republicans on the bottom, Democrats in the middle, and people identifying themselves as independent as the highest percentage.

Please say Democrats, Republicans rather than Liberal, conservatives. These are NOT conservatives when they pour trillions of dollars in Afghanistan, Iraq, Pakistan for nothing. These GOP guys are lately using Robert Gates on Iraq–do they know Al Queda is in Pakistan, Kashmir, Yemen,Saudi, etc.

Evidence that IF the GOP would nominate candidates closer to the middle, they would win. Alas, they send extremists far too often!

Wow those democrat liberals sure know how to create part time jobs don't they. And to top it off another 350,000 walked away from the work force. I guess that is what happens when instead of spending a trillion dollars on stimulating the economy, you gove away all that money to the dope addicts, welfare frauds and corrupt union bosses who elected you. This most corrupt president in history should be jailed for grand larceny and buncombe. What a con job.

    Rudy NYC:

"This poll seems to completely contradict the one that came out the other day that said more people identified themselves as independents than either as a Democrat or as a Republican."
    -----------

I suspect the previous poll wrapped itself around a generic Democratic, Independent, Republican narrative. This poll concentrates on a Liberal, Moderate, Conservative narrative.

Gallup trying to stir the pot, Rudy. Which is partly why Gallup has been so off on its data lately: too many cooks ruin the stew.

The survey poll should have asked people if they were "progressives" or "liberals" because some people prefer the progressive label. The poll numbers would have been much higher if progressive/liberal had been used.

conservatives are folks that wants stuff to stay like it was back in the 60s and 70s, and yell and scream about the government wants to take their liberty. liberals are folks that sees the changing trends of the future, map out their lives practically, and free themselves from the shackles and move this country forward.

Thanks for the morning smile! He is a great guy and I'm very blessed to have him in my life. That hug is going to have to wait until he's home from work ... but, will do!

And what about you? Any keepers on your horizon these days?

I think that part of the change may be those that identify with the president and others that might be running for the 2016 nomination. Part of it also might be the philosophy that since those that have aren't doing anything to help, the government has the moral obligation to help those that are struggling since it is a way to protect and help the citzenry.

If these so called conservatives were really "compassionate" as George W. Bush wanted them to be, then they would funding social welfare programs outside the government so that the government wouldn't need to be running programs like SNAP or CHIP.

Weird – Baby boomers are retiring at the rate of 350,000 a month. After paying into the programs their entire working lives, they are probably trying to get social security and Medicare before the corporate puppets and republican something for nothing crowd take it away from them.

    -------–
Not necessarily. The other article simply argued for more independents, many ex-GOP. I would hope that now that they are thinking for themselves, many would start rejecting the hard-core lock-step Radical Right. As usual the MSM is playing fuzzy with facts to put forth seemingly contradictory stories to sell viewing time.
