High court rejects review of Arizona's 20-week abortion ban

Washington (CNN) – The U.S. Supreme Court on Monday turned aside Arizona's appeal to reinstate its law banning most abortions after 20 weeks of pregnancy.

A federal appeals court last year said the restrictions were unconstitutional.

The high court's refusal without comment to intervene now means the provisions passed in 2012 cannot be enforced.

Twelve states have similar laws, shortening the period the high court established four decades ago, after it said abortion should be legal until viability, when a fetus is generally believed to survive outside the womb. Current medical science puts that at about 24 weeks into the pregnancy.

Legal challenges in other states are working their way through the courts, including in Texas, which passed a variety of measures over access to abortion.

The case is Horne v. Isaacson (13-402).

I sincerely pray that the GOP makes abortion and gay marriage their only issues in the upcoming presidential elections.

    LOL!!!

Yes, well, that does happen to be when they're at their tastiest.

@Fawn: The professionals have decided it's 24 weeks. Did you decide it's 23 weeks based on your professional opinion? One week makes that big of a difference in your book?

I would hope that women making the decision whether to abort would do so BEFORE 6 months into pregnancy. But, such decisions are best left to her, her physician, and her God.

Easy to kill life that can't defend itself. However the liberals will cry out on the street corners to save a murderer on death row.

If the GOP wants to remain electable, they need to bottle up the religious nuts and their "social values" would-be tyrannies.

Gop platform no abortions- do not kill them at birth. No foodstamps- kill them with starvation a couple of days after . Wars let's kill them that way, also. the anti abortion crowd has not clue. A bunch of hypocrits.

Would we get the nasty remarks about Arizona cutting off abortion at the same time Norway does if abortion were more reliably available in Arizona?

Most likely the court doesn't want to review this right now because all these state laws differ and they want additional arguments to be put forward before they jump to a ruling.

A 20-week-old fetus cannot survive outside the womb and is NOT a "baby."

Now they"l go for a 6month waiting period, to make sure that they really want to have an abortion.

If the GOP wants to remain electable, they absolutely have to pander to the religious nuts and their "social values" would-be tyrannies.

    We're both right.

@Fawn: Viability is at 24 weeks – do the research.

Regarding your statement, "I think 20 weeks is plenty of time to decide what you need to do." It's not your body, it's not your decision. You don't know the individual circumstances, so you do not get to decide for another woman.

Objections against abortion are invariably religious-based; if you want to live in a theocracy, move to Iran.

For those that oppose abortion, you are fine to have that opinion/"value" or whatever you want to call it. My question is for them, are you willing to take care of and adopt all those children that are born because a woman who didn't know she was pregnant was unable to get an abortion for the pregnancy that she never wanted? There needs to be better information to those that are in engaged in sexual activity as to what does happen. It is nice to tell people of that age not to have sex, but people are because we humans are sexual creatures. Facts need to be out there and not dreams of people keeping it all bottled up.

The GOP, a party obsessed with wombs and bibles. Not much of a platform for winning at the national level.

Your snarky comment is offensive to millions who see this in a different light than you, and to the millions of women who've agonized over such a decision.

Thanks to the Tea Party, Conservative thinking, and their supporters on the CNN blogs, as an Independent, I now either vote for Democrats, or not at all.

The GOP has long ceased to be an even remotely possible option.

Party leaders take note . . . . . there are now millions like me.

    1. What woman doesn't know she's pregnant until after 20 weeks into her term?
    2. Better information? You have sex, you run the risk of pregnancy. Does it need to be clearer?

The state should just say, "Too bad, the voters wanted it, and it is law". Any doctor that attempts to perform an abortion is arrested. Any federal agency that trys to release the doctor from jail gets arrested and thrown in jail. How about another law? Any woman that gets an abortion is required to eat the fetus? It isn't a human, just a growth of cells correct?
