Republican governors offer support for Christie

Washington (CNN) - As New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie looked to move on Tuesday from a political scandal plaguing his administration, two Republican governors said they still back his leadership of the Republican Governors Association.

Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker and Utah Gov. Gary Herbert told reporters outside the White House they had confidence in Christie's leadership after documents came to light suggesting his staffers had shut down access lanes to a busy bridge last year in an alleged act of political retribution.

n. a pause to assess the state, progress or condition of the political news cycle

DEVELOPING …. CHRISTIE’S STATE OF THE STATE SPEECH STARTS WITH A “TEST”: “The last week has certainly tested this administration. Mistakes were clearly made. We let down the people we're entrusted to serve. I know our citizens deserve better, much better. Now, I'm the governor. And I'm ultimately responsible for all that happens on my watch, both good and bad. Without a doubt, we will cooperate with all appropriate inquiries to make sure that this breach of trust does not happen again.”

EXCLUSIVE … PETER HAMBY ON HILLARY CLINTON’S IOWA PROBLEM: “Iowa has not elected a female governor, senator or member of Congress. In 2016, Clinton could finally put those demons to rest. But beneath the surface here, familiar pitfalls might await Clinton should she decide to run: A restive and emboldened progressive base long suspicious of Clintonian moderation, a hunger for fresh Democratic voices, and a caucus electorate that boasts a cherished tradition of voting with its heart rather than its head.”

Poll: D.C. mayor leads, helped by crowded field, in re-election bid

Washington (CNN) - Over a year after an ethics scandal threatened to end his career, a new poll finds that Washington, D.C. Mayor Vincent Gray currently has twice as much support as his closest challenger for re-election in 2014.

A Washington Post survey released Tuesday, which gauged registered Democrats, also indicated that Gray was benefiting from a crowded field of opponents in the city's April 1 Democratic primary. Though the incumbent was in the lead, only 24% of Washingtonian Democrats said they would vote for him, while the next three candidates garnered the support of a combined 34% of Democratic voters.
