CNN's GUT CHECK for January 15, 2014

CNN's GUT CHECK | for January 15, 2014| 5 p.m.
- n. a pause to assess the state, progress or condition of the political news cycle

SENATE REPORT: BENGHAZI ATTACK ‘LIKELY PREVENTABLE’ … The deadly attack on the U.S. diplomatic compound in Benghazi, Libya, was "likely preventable" based on known security shortfalls and prior warnings that the security situation there was deteriorating, the majority of the Senate Intelligence Committee concluded in a report released on Wednesday. – Jason Hanna and Evan Perez

See the full Senate Select Committee on Intelligence Report here: http://www.intelligence.senate.gov/benghazi2014/benghazi.pdf

SEN. MARCO RUBIO, R-FLORIDA, IN A STATEMENT: “The committee should reexamine former Secretary of State Clinton’s failure to provide adequate security for our deployed personnel in Benghazi, as well as what actions she and others, including the President, took in the hours and days that followed the attack.”

SPECIAL COUNSEL NAMED IN NEW JERSEY BRIDGE PROBE …
The New Jersey General Assembly, which is investigating the George Washington Bridge controversy, on Wednesday named the same prosecutor that went after former Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich as its own special counsel for a committee that will lead the bridge probe. Assembly Democrats announced former Assistant U.S. Attorney Reid Schar will help the Assembly Investigatory Committee as it further reviews the closure of access lanes to the nation's busiest bridge for four days last fall in an alleged act of political retribution by top aides to Gov. Chris Christie. – Ashley Killough and Paul Steinhauser

POLL: MOST IN NEW JERSEY BELIEVE CHRISTIE, BUT HALF SAY CONTROVERSY COULD IMPACT 2016:
A new Quinnipiac University survey released Wednesday notes that a majority describe Christie as a "leader" rather than a "bully." And while the Republican governor, who's seriously considering a 2016 run for the White House, gets positive marks on his personal characteristics, his approval rating among New Jersey voters has slipped. Half of the poll’s respondents say the bridge controversy has hurt his potential presidential bid. – Paul Steinhauser

HOUSE ARMED SERVICES COMMITTEE CHAIRMAN TO RETIRE …
Longtime Rep. Buck McKeon, the chairman of the House Armed Services Committee, will announce Thursday that he won't seek re-election this year and will retire at the end of his term, a Republican source with knowledge of McKeon's thinking tells CNN. McKeon's office neither confirmed nor denied reports about retirement. But it put out an e-mail release saying the 11-term Republican from California would make a statement before cameras at 9 a.m. ET on Thursday. – Paul Steinhauser, Ashley Killough and Deirdre Walsh

LONGTIME DEMOCRAT TO RETIRE FROM HOUSE … Add another name to the growing roster of House members retiring at the end of the year rather than running for re-election. Twelve-term Democrat Jim Moran of Virginia announced Wednesday that he plans to retire at the end of 2014. – Paul Steinhauser

THE BUZZ: PAUL BURNISHES YOUTH CRED, JOINS SNAPCHAT…
Coming to a mobile device near you: a disappearing Rand Paul selfie. The Republican senator from Kentucky and possible 2016 presidential candidate on Wednesday joined Snapchat, the photo sharing app that allows users to send pictures and video to each other that disappears shortly after being viewed. – Dan Merica and Sara Fischer

TRIVIA ANSWER from @sarafischer

Kay Hagan is the niece of former Florida Governor Lawton Chiles. Prior to serving as Governor from 1991 to 1998, Chiles was a U.S. Senator representing Florida from 1971 to 1989.

Hagan got her start in politics working for Chiles’ Senate campaign - placing bumper stickers on cars in Lakeland, Florida, where she grew up. Her father was a car salesman who eventually became the Mayor of Lakeland.

Hagan made history in 2008 when she became the first woman to defeat an incumbent woman in a Senate election by ousting Republican Senator Elizabeth Dole.

"He can start by calling on the leaders over in the Senate to pass our jobs bills.”

This from the guy who orchestrated an 11th hour House rules change to prevent anyone from bringing a discharge petition to force the House to vote on the Senate's bipartisan budget, all so the House Teatrolls could make sure that the gov't shut down occurred and that Boehner would be the only one with the power to stop it.

No big surprise here from the committee Its only possible to say these things with hindsight.
It will hopefully put an end to Darell Issa,s machinations as well. more than likely however he'll keep going until Hilary announces her intention to run for president then he publish his much more harshly critical findings... any bets anyone?
    Regards,
    Hodgson.

Just heard that the embassy personnel didn't want extra security.
I am sure the car thief will find a way to spin it to say our President and Hillary are to blame for that also.
    Give it up!!!
