Grimm won’t be charged over clash with reporter

Washington (CNN) – Rep. Michael Grimm, who threatened to throw a reporter off a balcony earlier this week, will not be charged because of the incident.

“Consistent with our law enforcement responsibilities, we looked into the event, determined there isn’t a complainant and have closed the matter,” said Shenell Antrobus, a spokesperson for United States Capitol Police.

After President Barack Obama’s State of the Union address on Tuesday, Grimm stormed off from a TV interview when NY1 Reporter Michael Scotto tried to ask the congressman a question about the Justice Department investigation into possible illegal fundraising during his 2010 campaign.

After Scotto finished up with his live shot – but while the camera still rolled – Grimm got into Scotto’s face and threatened him.

"Let me be clear to you: If you ever do that to me again, I'll throw you off this f***ing balcony," Grimm said, as they were standing on the third floor of the rotunda in the Cannon House building.

Scotto replied that he was just trying to ask "a valid question."

"No, no. You're not man enough, you're not man enough. I'll break you in half, like a boy," Grimm replied.

The exchange drew considerable attention in the media and Democrats – who see Grimm’s New York House seat as a possible win for them in the 2014 midterm election – seized upon the threat.

The next morning, Grimm called Scotto to offer his apology, which the reporter accepted.

"He was very gracious in accepting my apology,” Grimm told reporters on Wednesday. “We're going to have lunch sometime next week and make sure this is all behind us.”

Grimm, who was first elected in 2010 and represents Staten Island and part of Brooklyn, has been dogged by campaign finance allegations and the looming federal investigation. Grimm, who denies any involvement in the case, stands accused of taking campaign donations from overseas and encouraging donors to exceed contribution limits.

CNN’s Shimon Prokupecz, Ashley Killough and Dan Merica contributed to this report.

That's too bad. Scotto should have taken him to the mat to send a message to ALL of Congress about their consistent behavior that shows they consider themselves above the rest of us and perceive our suffering and struggles as unimportant as compared to their own personal advancement via pandering to the wealthy. Grimm's ridiculous roid-rage type outburst, particularly when followed by his blather about demanding "respect" and considering it disrespectful that he got asked a tough question, was a great example of just how aloof and removed from reality these people truly are and how much they consider themselves above the rest of us. He should've been ground into the mud.

BACKGROUND: It should be noted that this is not Grimm's first threat of physical violence with a reporter. Coincidently, the previous near altercation occured over a year ago with another NY1 reporter at the conclusion of an interview INSIDE the network's broadcast studio. The studio immediately banned Grimm from their premises.

There was more to this near altercation than what is seen in the video clip. Thankfully, for all parties, Mr. Scotto has decided not to press charges against Grimm. Read statement from Capitol Police once again. Mr. Scoto now has some leverage.

Yeah, you're right nobody is working hard and getting ahead in America anymore. Let's just roll up the country and turn out the lights. hahahaha Lazy leftists!!

The ladder is there all around you. Unfortunatley it is you that must get off your lazy backside, stand on your own two feet, grab the ladder and start climbing. Stop sitting on your fat backsides, crying and whining that nobody is putting you on their back and carrying you up the ladder. Stop demanding that others do for you, what you will not do for yourselves. Nobody is stealing anything from anybody. The fact that you are too lazy to achieve and try does make those that are evil people. It says you are lazy. Yes, the truth hurts. Now get to work and do something for yourself for once in your life.

The conservative violent threat has become OK I guess. After seeing Tea Party rallies with guns waving around and racial slurs, something like this seems tame. I think we will see more violent threats and eventually violence itself from the far right. Like the Tea Party says:
"Our nation was founded on violence. The option is on the table. I don't think that we should ever remove anything from the table as it relates to our liberties and our freedoms." —Tea Party-backed Texas GOP congressional candidate Stephen Broden, suggesting the violent overthrow of the U.S. government if Republicans don't win at the ballot box, interview with Dallas's WFAA-TV, Oct. 21, 2010

I guess that's why I nor any of my coworkers have gotten a raise in 4 years. That must explain it. But our CEO can go out and purchase a new SL500 and a Bentley. Must be nice to live lavishly while your workers bust their behinds and don't get compensated for it.

You do realize that me baiting you into blabbering screed equating all the unemployment and suffering in the country with people being "lazy" "mooches" "takers" and "leaches" and other such nonsense actually does damage to your positions, don't you? Your blanket generalization of all people who are poor or unemployed or underemployed or receiving some sort of government assistance as unworthy panhandlers looking for handouts and a free ride disgusts a very VERY large and growing portion of the population who recognizes it as the brainwashed ramblings of someone who bought, hook line and sinker, into Reagan's sales pitch for plutocracy. Blanket indeed...your insistence on equating wealth (or lack thereof) with virtue (or lack thereof) is nothing but a warm lie to wrap yourselves in so you can blame people for their own suffering and dismiss them as subhuman. Please proceed...I'm not sure you've talked about them that way enough yet today.

It usually does seem that way. Non-conservatives call it a hive mind. I think conservatives call it "common" sense.

    Herman Cain, October 5, 2011

Cain makes the lazy argument. Unfortunately, the man is speaking about an America that hasn't existed for at least 30 years. Americans are no longer rewarded by hard work. It used to be that a single spouse could not only support a family of four, but could earn enough to save and invest. Nowadays, both spouses work and they are living paycheck to paycheck. What happened to the American Dream. Greed killed it. MIddle class wages have not kept up with inflation for the past 30+ years. The wages have stagnated. The cost of a college education is getting beyond the reach of most middle class families.
