Obamacare may push people out of the workforce

New York (CNNMoney) - Many workers may opt to work less to retain their eligibility for Medicaid or federal subsidies under Obamacare, a new report has found.

The Affordable Care Act could reduce the labor force by the equivalent of 2.5 million workers in 2024, according to the non-partisan Congressional Budget Office's annual outlook.

    Why work your fingers to the bone 40-60 hours per week and still not be able to make ends meet? The American Dream is dying because the middle class is shrinking. In fact, I think it died about the time Reagan took office, way back when we were first exposed to trickle down. Obamacare isn't forcing people out of the work force. It's the low wages.

    "That doesn't mean that many jobs will be lost, CBO says. Rather, more people will likely opt to reduce their hours, or leave the workforce entirely, so they stay under the income caps for Medicaid and federal subsidies."

    Many of us knew this before the election. Pelosi said she didn't even know what was in it until it passed, and Obama lied to get elected. Not one Republican voted for this monstrosity. His plan was always to gut the middle class and control the poor. It's a travesty for America.

    CBO is talking about people being freed by the fact that they have secured insurance and better coverage to do things like RETIRE ON TIME instead of being stuck working later into their lives in order to secure health care or save for retirement...or to do things like REDUCE THEIR HOURS because they can still meet their needs now. Characterizing this as "PUSHING" is a load of crap and CNN Is adopting the GOP/Teatroll spin on this by using that kind of language. This isn't PUSHING people out of the labor force, it's giving them the freedom and flexibility to leave it on time or work less in order to meet their needs...and by work less I don't mean do nothing, I mean work a normal 40-hour work week instead of occupying 2 job slots and working 60. "PUSHING" is a completely and utterly inaccurate characterization and was chosen deliberately to give the impression that the ACA is doing something negative, when in fact these estimates and predictions are a very positive thing.

  9. More bad news..

    @uncommon sense
    "have to keep the haters frothing" ?? Really? This many jobs being eliminated by a healthcare reform that was shoved through, "you can keep your doctor", people being dropped by their insurance, companies laying off/cutting back full time positions because of Obamacare, and this is what you have to say??
    Obviously none of the above have affected you or anyone you care about, yet. But when it does, maybe you'll have something more meaningful to say than "keep the haters frothing". Stop being a party stooge and think for yourself for a change.

    From the CBO report itself:

    "The estimated reduction stems almost entirely from a net decline in the amount of labor that workers choose to supply, rather than from a net drop in businesses' demand for labor, so it will appear almost entirely as a reduction in labor force participation and in hours worked relative to what would have occurred otherwise rather than as an increase in unemployment (that is, more workers seeking but not finding jobs) or underemployment (such as part-time workers who would prefer to work more hours per week)"

    This isn't "killing jobs" or "pushing" people out of the labor force. It's giving people freedom and flexibility to retire on time or reduce their hours due to health problems or work less and still meet their needs instead of taking two jobs and working silly hours.

    The headline is inaccurate if you read the full CBO report. As usual the media looks at the glass as half empty, never half full.

    "Many of us knew this before the election"

    Really? Teatrolls around the country were saying to themselves "you know, I bet the ACA is going to give those nearing retirement the freedom to retire on time or to reduce their hours due to age-releated health problems...and it'll probably let a lot of those people out there working 2 jobs go down to working just 1 job because they now can afford to secure or buy health insurance in some fashion."??? THAT is what Teatrolls were saying? Because I'll tell ya, THAT is what this means, NOT that jobs are being lost or that people are being forced into unemployment. Perhaps you should spend some time learning what you're really talking about instead of just spewing ridiculous, off-point, irrelevant mischaracterizations of the data like its an ideological autonomic response. And perhaps CNN shouldn't encourage you by eliberately choosing language like "PUSHING people out of the labor force," which is blatantly incorrect.

    This is a good thing... People should be forced to try and keep their job because they cannot get insurance coverage. This is nothing for Republicans to hold on to. Obamacare equals choices..

    Thanks for pointing that out for all the morons who failed to even read the article, which includes this: "That doesn't mean that many jobs will be lost, CBO says." I see the conservative blog/comment plan now. Scan news article at a rate of 5 seconds each. If the word "Obama" appears, type "socialist" "jobs loss" or "Benghazi" as quickly as possible ignoring spelling and grammar. Press "post" and move on. Volume counts. Thankfully, intelligence gained at a Creationist-friendly school is not contagious.

    What's funny a show on the economic recovery showed there's plenty of jobs available but retraining is what's scaring people away from trying them, not the lack of them as published by republicans constantly..Many corporations like GE Nuclear,Westinghouse and Siemens are hiring but like I stated before its slow because of available help trained in these jobs..I myself traveled nationwide doing work at nuclear facilities for over 30 years and there was never a lack of work because I had the certs, credentials and government clearences from the NRC,Federal agencies needed to go from one facility to another..It just takes time and the guts to put it on the line saying I will..I'm now retired living comfortably knowing also my union pension which kept Wall Street going is stronger than ever, that's a fact republicans really don't want you to know how our union retirement portfolios kept Wall Street from totally collapsing...Hats off to the unions across America also that back our returning veterans because they need something in their futures like a job to come home too...And don't worry about this rubbish about jobs ,remember the republicans are going to create them ,what a joke they are right!!
