Sandra Fluke asks for California Democratic Party endorsement

Washington (CNN) - Sandra Fluke has asked the California Democratic Party for their endorsement in the race for an open 2014 congressional seat, but a spokeswoman for the women's rights activist says Fluke is still on the fence about a bid.

"It is not the same as filing to run or declaring that she is running," said Abigail Gardner, Fluke's spokeswoman, in an email. "It was something she felt she had to do on Friday to keep her options open due to CA Dem Party deadlines."

Gardner defended the move, telling CNN that "if you look at the website and the list of names who have filed for that potential endorsement, there are a lot of names and not everyone has declared or even decided if they will seek the seat."

Fluke, who is vying to represent the wealthy district that covers part of Los Angeles, Santa Monica and Beverly Hills, filed for the endorsement on Friday. Party leaders will meet this weekend in Los Angeles to vote on who the party should endorse in the race to replace Rep. Henry Waxman, a 40-year veteran of Congress who announced last week he was retiring.

Shortly after the Waxman announcement, Fluke said in a statement she is "strongly considering running" and will be making her decision "soon."

According to Gardner, Fluke's thinking has not changed since last week and she is still considering the bid.

Fluke rose to political prominence after Rush Limbaugh called the then-Georgetown law student a "slut" and "prostitute" in 2012 for urging a Democratic congressional panel for more coverage of contraceptives in the Affordable Care Act, President Barack Obama's sweeping health care law.

The slur set off a firestorm and Fluke was quickly catapulted to stardom. Obama called Fluke to express his support for her, and a flood of advertisers pledged to take their business elsewhere because of Limbaugh's comments. It also catapulted Fluke to a speaking slot at the Democratic National Convention in 2012, where she stressed equal pay for women and contraceptive coverage.

The race for the reliably Democratic seat has already drawn a lot of attention from area Democrats. Five other congressional hopefuls have filed for the Democratic Party's endorsement, including former mayoral candidate Wendy Greuel and state Sen. Ted Lieu.

The Washington Post first reported that Fluke was requesting the endorsement.

If Limbaugh had kept his mouth shut, she wouldn't be thinking of running. If she will represent the district well and listen to the consitutents, then I wish her well.

I wish she would run. Let's face the facts. Her candidacy will motivate the conservative movement to stick to losing issues, the social issues. I am confident that more than one conservative will say something stupid. She has become too tempting a target for some people in the extreme right to keep their mouths shut.

Paid by Tax payer–happened when tax payer's money escaped with Tax-evasion sitting in CAYMAN ISLANDS, SWISS ACCTS, CORPORATE GREED, OUTSOURCING JOBS TO INDIA, PHILIPPINES ETC. WHEN IT COMES TO UNEMPLOYED AMERICANS, POOR AMERICANS–you rant? Tell congress to raise wages, pass jobs bill–if you have guts.

She just graduated from law school in 2012. If she wants to actually help people, she should stay a lawyer vs enter her life into the mud slinging crapshow of politics where as shown by the current state of affairs, nothing is going to really change. Plus, the whole concept that she is only relevant and known due to being called names by Rush Limbaugh isnt going to help the average person become convinced she really has the experience and track record to be a "politician". Not to be downtalking her, I just think her chances would be much better if she did some work as a lawyer first to get some type of track record, not just being that person who talked about insurance and contraceptives.

Let's stoop to your level. Free birth control pills cost taxpayers a lot less than the Free Wars that don't pay for themselves.

Id vote for her , she's smart , honest and hardworking .

And I will never forget how rude and disrespectful she was treated by Rep. Darrell Issa (R-Calif.)

Darrell Issa , the second most wealth congressman in the house . Darrell Issa , the guy who only helps himself and his friends .

Chris Christie / Darrell Issa 2016
Because we know where you live !

" Free birth control pills cost taxpayers a lot less than the Free Wars that don't pay for themselves."

Seriously. Or orphans. Or public assistance to single mothers who live below the poverty line and are trapped between a rock and a hard place trying to get a job and take care of their child(ren) on sub-subsistence wages. Or billions of dollars in unnecessary, unjustified tax loopholes and deductions only available to the extremely wealthy. Or billions of dollars in unnecessary, unjustified government subsidies paid out as blood money to giant industries reporting record profits all throughout the biggest global recession in a century. The list is ever so long.

So it appears that she is taking the apporpriate steps, as per the guidelines, in the event she decides to run.
I hope she does run if only to bring out the worst of that cray-cray behavior in what passes for Republicans these days.
    Run, Sandra, Run.
Show voters what Republicans love to hate.

Why wait? Why let a rare window of opportunity pass you by? Open races for House seat are rare. It would be a good start if she wishes to enter politics. She seems to be a pretty confident person to me. One secret of success is having the courage to fail, combined with the resiliency to rebound from that failure. Rebound. Not recover, but rebound. To jump back up right where you left off, as if nothing had ever happened.

Why is it that the only people the Democrat Party can scrape up to run are people that think the governent should be in the business of giving things away that they take from others? What has this woman actually accomplished in her life? What knwledge and experience does she offer? What has she created? What has she lead or built? Nothing. She is part of the Entitlement Generation brought up to think everybody is owed a tropy for showing up. And now she is here to collect the trophy sh ebelieves she is owned. She is a very bad example to hold out for other women.

Wow – thanks Rush! I have always said a progressives best friend is a load mouthed, no-filter conservative. With the rise of the radical elements in the Tea Party and the Theocracy movement, we are going to need more brave souls like this woman to stand up for Freedom and progress.

hasn't she spent most of her life attending school??? what real world experience does she bring to the table? it looks like she is simply trying to cash in on her 15 minutes of fame. by these standards, democrats would line up behind lindsay lohan or some other loser and put them up for offce just because they have name recognition.

@The Real Tom, please read up on what libertarianism is before you make such sweeping and misinformed statements. Your characterization of libertarianism is laughably off base. Sadly, that is probably intentional on your part....and you speak of being morally barren. Maybe the government can buy you a mirror so you can take a good look at yourself.

Comparing her to "lindsay lohan". You are getting close to repeating Rush's sexist insult. Will we have you to thanks for another brave women to enter the fight for freedom? Conservatives don't even know when they do it. Well keep it up. We need more progressives fired up!
