Sandra Fluke asks for California Democratic Party endorsement

Washington (CNN) - Sandra Fluke has asked the California Democratic Party for their endorsement in the race for an open 2014 congressional seat, but a spokeswoman for the women's rights activist says Fluke is still on the fence about a bid.

"It is not the same as filing to run or declaring that she is running," said Abigail Gardner, Fluke's spokeswoman, in an email. "It was something she felt she had to do on Friday to keep her options open due to CA Dem Party deadlines."

Gardner defended the move, telling CNN that "if you look at the website and the list of names who have filed for that potential endorsement, there are a lot of names and not everyone has declared or even decided if they will seek the seat."

Fluke, who is vying to represent the wealthy district that covers part of Los Angeles, Santa Monica and Beverly Hills, filed for the endorsement on Friday. Party leaders will meet this weekend in Los Angeles to vote on who the party should endorse in the race to replace Rep. Henry Waxman, a 40-year veteran of Congress who announced last week he was retiring.

Shortly after the Waxman announcement, Fluke said in a statement she is "strongly considering running" and will be making her decision "soon."

According to Gardner, Fluke's thinking has not changed since last week and she is still considering the bid.

Fluke rose to political prominence after Rush Limbaugh called the then-Georgetown law student a "slut" and "prostitute" in 2012 for urging a Democratic congressional panel for more coverage of contraceptives in the Affordable Care Act, President Barack Obama's sweeping health care law.

The slur set off a firestorm and Fluke was quickly catapulted to stardom. Obama called Fluke to express his support for her, and a flood of advertisers pledged to take their business elsewhere because of Limbaugh's comments. It also catapulted Fluke to a speaking slot at the Democratic National Convention in 2012, where she stressed equal pay for women and contraceptive coverage.

The race for the reliably Democratic seat has already drawn a lot of attention from area Democrats. Five other congressional hopefuls have filed for the Democratic Party's endorsement, including former mayoral candidate Wendy Greuel and state Sen. Ted Lieu.

The Washington Post first reported that Fluke was requesting the endorsement.

@Rudy-I agree with the free wars concept. Shame on Obama for continuing the war in Afghanistan and dragging the US into Libya.

Sandra Fluke? The woman who wants free everything, paid for by the taxpayers?

Let me try to wrap my mind around this... You don't want women to choose terminating a pregnancy and you hate all those moochers and takers who are unwanted children... BUT you don't want to chip in a fraction of a cent from your taxes to pay for a woman to avoid getting pregnant in the first place. Wow, that makes perfect sense to me!!!!!

The infuriatingly sad thing is, a research survey showed that 29% of Louisiana GOPers/Teatrolls actually do think the slow response to Katrina was Obama's fault....despite, you know, Obama not being POTUS nor in charge of the response at the time.

Yes. he's saying exactly that. We had a "war with Libya" without Congressional approval. And, if Pres. Obama had not ordered a surge in the Afghanistan War, who knows where Bin Laden would be today.

Sandra Fluke looks like a nice enough lady. I think she is still a bit green around the gills but will mature in time. Just like Obama who was imbedded in Academia and a bit green around the gills. Now he is getting his baptisim in the real world and a rude awaking to the cold hard facts of life.

Very well said. Don't forget about Syria as we all know that's going to require some more "involvement" as well.

Can't go both ways, Tom. Remember the Right's tizzy that "Obama was leading from behind" because he wouldn't go full in on Iran, Libya, Syia and other fun spots? Have you forgotten Mr. McCain's lust for a war in just about every nation? How about the GOP's attempt to end a peaceful solution with Iran by demanding more sanctions? At least under Mr. Obama's actions solid accomplishments were made and far fewer Americans were injured or killed (never mind civilians) than in the disasters of Mr. Bush or Mr. Cheney (not that the Right cares about lives, now) . Which is it? You want war or not?
    =====

Now rs, you should know by now that as a libertarian I opposed going in to Iraq and certainly didn't think that our approach to Afghanistan was wrong. So, for me, it's get out. We are beholden to that region because of oil. As a realist, I know we can't just completely disengage and I fully understand that we care about that region due to oil. With regards to Iran, I honestly can say I don't know what to do there but I hope we can stay uninvolved as we have so far.

I must address your comment about the civilian deaths. With this drone program that Obama has ramped up, do you realize how many civilians have been killed from those strikes? Why would you make such a holier-than-thou comment about Cheney/Bush that they don't care about deaths when it appears that Obama doesn't care either. I won't harp on your "never mind about civilians" because I know you were trying to make a point about the dastardly repubs and I know you care about the civilians dying. I do find it curious that you aren't more concerned about how many civilian deaths there have been from the drone strikes though...

No... Obama acted under the war powers act which allows him some period of time (90 days?, I forget exactly) after which congress would have had to sign off on it. Ghadaffi bough the farm before the time period was up, methinks.
