Obama to deliver much needed aid to drought-stricken California

Palm Springs, California (CNN) - President Barack Obama will travel Friday to California and announce a new federal initiative aimed at helping farms and communities there in the grips of a devastating drought.

The President will be joined by Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack, who told reporters Thursday that the program will include $100 million in livestock disaster assistance for California farmers and producers, along with funding for water conservation projects, and aid for states across the country affected by the drought.

Vilsack says the President has directed several federal agencies to have the program up and running within 60 days, and he says the program will help cover losses for 2014 and the previous two years.

Funding for the drought-assistance program was included in the 2014 farm bill, which was passed by Congress and signed by the president last week.

The President will join Gov. Jerry Brown on a tour of a farm in the Fresno area and will also meet business leaders before delivering remarks.

Following the stop in Fresno, Obama travels to the Palm Springs area for a bilateral meeting and working dinner with King Abdullah II of Jordan. The president is scheduled to have down time over the weekend. He returns to Washington on Monday.

But what the $7 Billion Obama pledged to Africa during the Sequester?

Let me guess, the republicans will hit the talk circuit Sunday, saying that helping Americans is bad, but starting wars is good.

Republicans alienate over half the population with their war on reproductive rights, they then go after 45 million uninsured, follow it up with failing to vote on immigration reform for 11 million, fail to help veterans, ignore that over 80% want background checks, refuse go with the 65% who want to raise the minimum wage, and the majority want billionaires to pay a fair share of taxes.

If people in these groups have friends who are angry about the republican obstruction, it could be a bad year for GOBaggers

Honestly, I don't care how much money you invest in agriculture in the drought, it's not sustainable. It's especially unsustainable where they practice unsustainable farming practices. I've seen pictures of the loose dirt and empty fields... this is the type of thing they experienced in Oklahoma in the 30s... what is known as the dustbowl. If the wind kicks up, that precious dirt is going to blow away in the wind. Then all you have left is sand and rock to plant on.

    @DMFO,
I didn't realize that I stole your line (usual suspects). My bad. I will refrain from using it and I thank you for not brining out a lawsuit for patent infringement.

All those on the right who yell and scream about government spending better hope they never live in a place that has floods, droughts, hurricanes, tornadoes, etc. because they sure wouldn't want that bad old government doing anything to help people. Those hit by natural disasters should just by george pull themselves up by their bootstraps and get on with life. Or maybe some nice church group will fix everything. Holler all you want about government spending, but you better duck when a natural disaster comes your way.

Obama giving the money??? NO it is my hard earned money and I would like this Dictator in waiting to recognize that and stop acting like he is providing this money like the absurd minimum wage announcement yesterday that means nothing to anyone in the context to which it is applied- OH right it will require more taxes, printing money or borrowing while forcing a job loss -good going in a recession

    So,
It is the lack of rain, snow in the upper elevations of the mountains that has caused the severe drought which was pretty much Nation Wide last year. Apparently their isn't enough snow this year to alleviate the drought either. probably food prices will go up some because of the drought. Humm. I guess you Nanny Staters won't have to pick vegetables this year.

Right wingers will have a lot of cardiovascular issues come Nov when the first ever crown king of America Barack Hussein Obama is given the opportunity to move this country forward without right wing obstruction. They all will be given their pink slips by the American people in Nov.

"I guess you Nanny Staters won't have to pick vegetables this year."

CA certainly is a nanny state. It's one of the blue states that has to play nanny to all the red states. CA is one of the blue states paying more in federal taxes than it receives in federal funding...all so the red states can continue to do the reverse, using everyone else's tax money to help hide the economic effects of their conservative state economic policies.

    EE Gads,
Sorry Tone but those pink slips were mailed out a long time ago. Have you looked at the unemployment figures (Real Figures) lately? Humm. It is all that water brought down from other places that allows California to raise produce. Otherwise it would be what it once was, somewhat barren and desert like. Some want to divide California into several states. Good idea?
