Chelsea Clinton: LGBTQ rights 'unfinished business' of this century

(CNN) - Adapting a line from her mother, Chelsea Clinton said Sunday that shedding light on LGBTQ issues should be a major focus for human rights advocates this century.

"My mother has often said that the issue of women is the unfinished business of the 21st century,” she said of Hillary Clinton, the former New York senator and secretary of state. “That is certainly true. But so too are the issues of LGBTQ rights the unfinished business of the 21st century."

Chelsea Clinton was tapped as the keynote speaker for a Human Rights Campaign conference in Las Vegas - another appearance in a series of high-profile events for the former first daughter.

Despite her famed political lineage, Clinton, 33, has said she has no plans to run for public office, unlike her mother, who is seriously considering running for president in 2016.

"I am unapologetically biased towards both of my parents. I am glad there are some people in the audience who agree. I am unlimitedly their daughter," Clinton said in response to a question about her mother’s political aspirations. "I will support my mother in whatever she chooses to do. And my crystal ball is no more clear than yours."

In her address, Clinton pushed for more progress in combating bullying of gay youths. She pointed to celebrities such as Jason Collins, the NBA veteran who announced that he was gay in a Sports Illustrated story in April, and actress Ellen Page, who came out as gay at the same Las Vegas conference last Friday, as role models changing the lesbian, bisexual, gay, transgender, queer narrative.

"Changing laws and changing the political dialogue while necessary is insufficient to ensure that bullying stops; to ensure that every young person is supported by their parents and their teachers as they question who they are and they discover who they are regardless of the sexuality," Clinton said.

Clinton appeared with her mother last week in New York to launch a new partnership between the Clinton Foundation and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation to analyze women's advancement internationally.

She will also speak on women’s issues at an event at the University of Missouri-Kansas City later this month.

If you are referring to Tora Bora in December of 2001, it was pointed out that bin Laden was there but escaped because the Bush administration refused to allow him to be taken out.

Who cares what this lady has to say? Only given importance because of her last name. We got rid of the monarchy and replaced them by these dynastic families – Clinton, Bush, Kennedy. Countries need to get rid of dynastic politics!

Just like her parents, the Clintons' child vastly overstates a problem. How about world hunger? Climate change? Over population, etc. etc. Homosexual rights affect about 3% of the population. The Clinton Foundation has not ONE tangible accomplishment. Start there.

Again, Hilary is not qualified to speak on behalf of women's rights. She stayed with a philandering husband just to get to the top of her political ambitions. And her own example of her work ethic is self-serving and despicable. Not a respectable example. There are many more women of integrity who leave her in the dust.

really? Out of all the ills that plagues our planet and its life, LGBTQ rights should be the unfinished business of this century? Way to make herself look like a clueless privileged buffoon.

    I have more to say....

"My mother has often said that the issue of women is the unfinished business of the 21st century,” she said of Hillary Clinton, the former New York senator and secretary of state. “That is certainly true. But so too are the issues of LGBTQ rights the unfinished business of the 21st century."

The women issue is definitely an unfinished business and it is definitely the unfinished business of the 21st century and I think they should focus on that. But if you read the first paragraph in the article, she says that the gay issue of should be a major focus for this country. Look, this country is full of problems, and making the LGBTQ rights a major issue is just simply irresponsible. If you tell me that jobs and economy, which are actually the MAJOR issues of this country, should be considered to be in the same level as the gay rights as a priority, it is just an irresponsible statement in my opinion. But like I said, this is just my opinion, just like what Chealsea is saying is her opinion. nothing more than that.

How can anything Chelsea Clinton says be worthy on being on the main page at CNN? Certainly there must be more important figures than Chelsea Clinton.

Why would anyone care what Chelsea Clinton has to say about anything? She was a kid who lived in the White House, how does that make her someone worth listening to on matters of domestic and foreign policy.

This country is so messed up its not even funny.

She is so, so right about womens' situations being the unfinished business of the last century. Gay things are in the news all the time, so they are getting plenty of attention, but women's situations have disappeared from people's consciousness.

The unfinished BUSINESS of this country, is restoring jobs to America.

A cardinal sin in college thesis writing was to use an acronym without a definition (Ref. LGBTQ). The acronym may be obvious to some but not to ALL plus it could share a different definition.
