Democratic congresswoman to retire after one term

Washington (CNN) – Two years is enough for Democratic Rep. Gloria Negrete McLeod, who announced Tuesday that she will retire from her California congressional seat at the end of her first term in office.

McLeod – who was sworn in just over a year ago in January 2013 – said she will instead run for San Bernardino County supervisor.

"This was a decision not made lightly," McLeod said in a statement. "However my desire to represent this community locally, where I have lived for more than forty years, and where I have long served as an elected official, won out."

The freshman congresswoman is the sixth California representative to retire this session, joining Republican Reps. Gary Miller, Howard "Buck" McKeon, and John Campbell, and Democratic Reps. Henry Waxman and George Miller.

An aide to the congresswoman told CNN that McLeod decided to retire because of a desire to run for local office, not because she had become fed up with congressional gridlock.

McLeod has a long record in local California elected office. She served three terms in the State Assembly and two terms in the State Senate before she was elected to represent California's 35th District in the House of Representatives in 2012.

McLeod benefited from congressional redistricting in 2012 when her current congressional district was redrawn to include communities she represented as a state senator. In the 2012 election, McLeod unseated Democratic Rep. Joe Baca to win the seat.

"It is a great honor and privilege to have represented the constituents of this district for almost two decades in many elected positions including Congress: but my heart is here in the District," McLeod concluded.

She seems a little "flighty". You mean she did know in 2012 that sshe wanted to serve "locally"? Was it her selfish nature that caused her to run against and unseat an experienced, incumbant Democrat with senority? Was it the convenience of running in a redrawn district that benefitted her? I hope she doesn`t get some disproportionate benefir like a lifetime pension or healthcare simply because she held a federal office for 2 years. Democrats should hold their people to a higher standard to distinguish themselves from the Vitters, Ensigns, etc.

Okay, she went to DC and realized that she could have more influence locally, by being a local politician.

Good for her. I salute anyone who performs public service and chooses not to make a career out of it. Oh wait... she plans on staying in public service. Oh well... at least she'll be a California's problem and not the entire nations.

  5. really now

You've got to be kidding. She has the rest of her career to do local politics. She won an office in the congress of the United States of America. She has the commitment to the citizens of this country to do the best she can for her term in office.

But perhaps she can't cut it and realizes her incompetence is actually more damaging than leaving.
