Newt Gingrich to John Kerry: Resign

Updated 6:44 p.m. ET, 2/18/2014

Washington (CNN) – Newt Gingrich is amplifying his call for Secretary of State John Kerry to resign over his comments that climate change represents the biggest challenge “of our generation.”

"I think it's very troubling that our secretary of state … believes that climate change is a greater danger than a nuclear war," Gingrich said Tuesday in an interview with CNN’s Wolf Blitzer on “The Situation Room.”

The CNN Crossfire co-host and former House speaker took to Twitter on Monday night, writing that "Every American who cares about national security must.demand Kerrey's (sic) resignation.A delusional secretary of state is dangerous to our safety."

Gingrich said he was “quite prepared to defend the argument that nuclear war is a far bigger threat to our society than is climate change.”

On Sunday, Kerry delivered one of the strongest speeches on climate change by any American official while visiting Indonesia, which has lost more than 40% of its tropical forests that store carbon absorbed from the atmosphere.

Kerry said "climate change can now be considered another weapon of mass destruction, perhaps the world's most fearsome weapon of mass destruction." He also called it "the greatest challenge of our generation."

Gingrich added in his CNN interview that Kerry was not a senator just giving “some wild speech to please the left,” noting that the top U.S. diplomat should be held to a "higher level of seriousness."

CNN has reached out to the State Department for reaction to Gingrich's comments.

I think Newt has lost it. Kerry did mention national security when he talked about WMDs and terrorism. Maybe Newt's the delusional one.

  2. They ought to change from the elephant to the hippo...

Meanwhile, a delusional Newt Gingrich is really only a threat to the weak minded, who think he has anything important to say.

Any candidate who seriously wants to build a colony on the moon while people are suffering here on Earth have no business throwing stones.

Gingrich is well known for his ideologically driven hyperbole. One would think that for a guy who is so in love with zoos that he would show a little more belief in the possibility that climate change could be real, and that it could hurt some of his animal friends.

So, by his own criteria, Newt should never have been elected dogcatcher, much less Speaker. I'll remember this when Newt is head of our colony on the moon.

John Kwrry said yesterday that biggest WMD of all is climate change. Yeah, that makes sense for the SOS to comment on that while the decisions/agreements they made fr Syrua appear to be not working out the way they had hoped...

And the reason Newtered and the Teatrolls hate Kerry's statement: it gives them nobody to demonize and treat as a bogeyman as a means of driving corporate imperialist policy. They need a "bad guy"...so much of their rhetoric and political agenda depends on the focus and momentum it provides when they can get 50% or so of the country to be absolutely rabid about a particular group of people. Sure, you might point out that they've already done that in terms of getting their base angry at the "scientists," but that's not really enough...can't bomb them, can't justify funneling more federal money to defense contractors to "fight the scientists," can't pick out a particular country with particular natural resources we like and that "needs" invasion because of "the scientists," etc. The conservatives who lived through the Cold War celebrated and tried to take all the credit when it was over...but they lament the loss of its convenient political narrative and desperately want to recreate a new version of it.

    Newt is right.

The biggest threat to this generation is politicians such as himself and the Wall Street crooks they support.

Lets make a deal. Kerry resigns and Newt never speaks in the media ever again.

And if Kerry worked for Newt he might actually care about this.

Why is CNN putting this clown on anyways? Resign? Because you don't accept the dangers associated with a changing environment?

Unbelievable hubris for Newt to think that he's still relevant at all, let alone that he can sway public opinion in any way. A sad little man looking for attention by throwing bombs on Twitter.

Remember, we have been told repeatedly that Gingrich is the "intellectual" member of the GOP's stars. He may well be a genius, no?

NEWT GINGRICH is now the ultimate arbiter of ethical behavior in Washington DC? Please excuse me for expelling more than my share of CO2 in my gales of hysterical laughter. National security will mean nothing if there are no nations or people on the planet to worry about. Maybe that's a good thing with people like Newt making decisions...

Oh, brother. Did Gingrich go on another shopping spree at Saks Fifth Avenue for his latest wife? Is he so broke that he needs to get attention from the crack-pot right wing base? He hasn't been in the news for a while so saying something really stupid and/or offensive is a sure bet.
