Newt Gingrich to John Kerry: Resign

Updated 6:44 p.m. ET, 2/18/2014

Washington (CNN) – Newt Gingrich is amplifying his call for Secretary of State John Kerry to resign over his comments that climate change represents the biggest challenge “of our generation.”

"I think it's very troubling that our secretary of state … believes that climate change is a greater danger than a nuclear war," Gingrich said Tuesday in an interview with CNN’s Wolf Blitzer on “The Situation Room.”

The CNN Crossfire co-host and former House speaker took to Twitter on Monday night, writing that "Every American who cares about national security must.demand Kerrey's (sic) resignation.A delusional secretary of state is dangerous to our safety."

Gingrich said he was “quite prepared to defend the argument that nuclear war is a far bigger threat to our society than is climate change.”

On Sunday, Kerry delivered one of the strongest speeches on climate change by any American official while visiting Indonesia, which has lost more than 40% of its tropical forests that store carbon absorbed from the atmosphere.

Kerry said "climate change can now be considered another weapon of mass destruction, perhaps the world's most fearsome weapon of mass destruction." He also called it "the greatest challenge of our generation."

Gingrich added in his CNN interview that Kerry was not a senator just giving “some wild speech to please the left,” noting that the top U.S. diplomat should be held to a "higher level of seriousness."

CNN has reached out to the State Department for reaction to Gingrich's comments.

Why is this news? Mr. Gingrich has repeatedly proven himself to be a loudmouthed idiot of the first degree. CNN, MSNBC, etc. please stop giving him coverage!

The Grinch has become senile and delusional, and still thinks he is king (but he never was). A failed Speaker of the House, with failed presidential aspirations, hardly qualifies him to be an authority on anything.

rs: What is really delusional is that our Secretary of State is travelling around the world attempting to provoke anger against a "few loud interest groups" who "shouldn't be given a chance to misdirect the conversation," when what he should be doing is encouraging dialogue from everyone. Language like this, which is why I no longer vote for Democrats, only serves to cause hate and discontent. This is a global problem, and should be addressed globally, not just by one side.

Kerry is a known liar, and married into being rich. He's never run anything or produced anything in his life. He's the embodiment of everything the left says they don't like about the 1%.

But since he's got a D by his name, the hypocrites love him. He could act the same, do the same things, say the same things, but if he had an R by his name, he would get bashed by the left.

Funny, since Newt starred with Nancy Pelosi of all people on at least two ads talking about the importance of climate change just 5 years ago. It's easily found on that famous internet video channel (without mentioning names) when you search "Newt Gingrich Nancy Pelosi". It's hilarious. Newt claims to have come to his $$$$senses since then, or at least his big donors have convinced him so. Ugh

Why don't politicians who's careers are over stay out of public view, like this Gingrich guy? What reason does he have and, the media also, for giving people like him the opportunity, to give his unwanted opinions? Look, we know this guy has a chip on his shoulder because he failed to garner the nomination for president, number one. Number two, we know his opinions are not biased because he's a super conservative republican who's only mission in life is to oppose any democratic idea/policy. But, who in the hell is he to question a sitting Secretary of State? How unprofessional and unethical is that? Retire like good folks do. Travel the world, enjoy your family and live out the rest of your life privately. Leave politics to those currently in office, please. You don't matter anymore.

Mr. Gingrich always tows the conservative line, and that line is that anything that would cause business to pause about the damage they have done to contribute to Climate change and the cost to reverse it would be. He is content to let our children put up with the affects of these very obvious, and candidly life changing, climate changes, he figures he will be gone its their problem. Mr. Gingrich wake up, look at the world around us and see what is happening. The ice is receding on both ends of the earth and seas are rising, and the earth is warming, and yes the weather is getting more severe. Please get with the realities, nit the politics.

In a recent (informal) poll taken among educated Georgian's, newt tied with Honey Boo Boo as the most embarrassing thing to come out of Georgia.

If taken today, I imagine newt would have pulled ahead.

Conservatives always express concern about the debt that we leave for future generations, but almost never seem to care about the environment that we leave for future generations. "Greed Over People" is right.

Newt, you have been in government too long! You should just retire. Congress should set a limit as to the number of terms they can serve.

Because Newt Gingrich knows all about resigning, that hypocrite is the only Speaker of the House ever to be charged with ethics violations and he chose to resign rather than be impeached.

Republicans in general do not believe in Science, with over 40% believing that earth was created 6000 years ago, and that all dinosauer bones are a fake – part of a conspiracy.

Most intelligent people think Science and education is valuable, so I'll stick with the Democrats.

Americans should get CNN to fire Newt. He is a delusional egomaniac who has set the stage for our current bitter division. If you don't believe there is man made climate change at this point...you are just too dumb to make any important decisions in this world.

When you're really serious about getting someone out of their job, the thing you need to do is tweet it. That will do it every time.

Didn't the recent CIA Worldwide Threat Assessment report single out climate change leading to mass migrations as the single most destabilizing event expected in the next 50 years? Maybe Newt should break out those reading glasses!

    Quoted from James R. Clapper:

“Food security has been aggravated partly because the world’s land masses are being affected by weather conditions outside of historical norms, including more frequent and extreme floods, droughts, wildfires, tornadoes, coastal high water, and heat waves. Rising temperature, for example, although enhanced in the Arctic, is not solely a high-latitude phenomenon. Recent scientific work shows that temperature anomalies during growing seasons and persistent droughts have hampered agricultural productivity and extended wildfire seasons. Persistent droughts during the past decade have also diminished flows in the Nile, Tigris-Euphrates, Niger, Amazon, and Mekong river basins.
Demographic trends will also aggravate the medium- to long-term outlooks for resources and energy. Through roughly 2030, the global population is expected to rise from 7.1 billion to about 8.3 billion; the size of the world’s population in the middle class will expand from the current 1 billion to more than 2 billion; and the proportion of the world’s population in urban areas will grow from 50 percent to about 60 percent—all putting intense pressure on food, water, minerals, and energy.”
