Newt Gingrich to John Kerry: Resign

Updated 6:44 p.m. ET, 2/18/2014

Washington (CNN) – Newt Gingrich is amplifying his call for Secretary of State John Kerry to resign over his comments that climate change represents the biggest challenge “of our generation.”

"I think it's very troubling that our secretary of state … believes that climate change is a greater danger than a nuclear war," Gingrich said Tuesday in an interview with CNN’s Wolf Blitzer on “The Situation Room.”

The CNN Crossfire co-host and former House speaker took to Twitter on Monday night, writing that "Every American who cares about national security must.demand Kerrey's (sic) resignation.A delusional secretary of state is dangerous to our safety."

Gingrich said he was “quite prepared to defend the argument that nuclear war is a far bigger threat to our society than is climate change.”

On Sunday, Kerry delivered one of the strongest speeches on climate change by any American official while visiting Indonesia, which has lost more than 40% of its tropical forests that store carbon absorbed from the atmosphere.

Kerry said "climate change can now be considered another weapon of mass destruction, perhaps the world's most fearsome weapon of mass destruction." He also called it "the greatest challenge of our generation."

Gingrich added in his CNN interview that Kerry was not a senator just giving “some wild speech to please the left,” noting that the top U.S. diplomat should be held to a "higher level of seriousness."

CNN has reached out to the State Department for reaction to Gingrich's comments.

It doesn't take a genius to figure you can't keep pumping crap into the atmosphere and expect there not to be consequence. I mean it's about science and chemicals. If you don't believe in either of those, too bad. Cities with high pollution have higher rates of breathing problems – how hard is that to understand????? Gingrich is obsolete – and so are his views.

Yes, a SOS that believes the majority opinion of climatologists to be reliable is horribly dangerous. We need someone who doesn't believe in science. Maybe Newt.

Newt: Nobody gives a darn what you think. Everybody is getting upset with what you say. We understand that your career is over, you're a has been, and we are truly tired of both listening to your yapping and seeing your curmudgeon face.

CNN is irresponsible to give a public soapbox to someone as delusional as Newt Gingrich.

I agree. Climate change is dumb phobia. Next...I wish it were true. I prefer the "warmer weather".

Loser Newt doesn't like Sec. Kerry so I know Sec. Kerry is doing something right! Keep up the good work Mr. Secretary.

The only one who is delusional is Newt himself. Maybe he should step down from CNN and go work for the want-to-be news station.

The climate change theory is the "has-been" referred to by many on these forums. Cimate change is at best made up to push an American agenda that the majoirty of us can't see, realize, or understand at the present time. All you have to do is look over the last 100 years of climate / weather records to realize that climate change, while it occurs, is not happening to the degree or danger that these so-called "experts" suggest.

Change is good. Warmer weather is better. Let's try being a little more "progressive" progressives. And Kerry Frankenstein is a bumbling fool.

Newt is correct. Global warming will be no problem at all once we are all living in the 51st state on the Moon with Newt as our Benevolent Leader.

    Dear Newt ,
You and Darrell Issa are proof that we as human being are still evolving , and have a long why do go .

Newt , still believes the world is flat , a diamonds are a girls best friend .

Until those old dinosaurs such a Newt sink into the tar pits of eternity, will rational people who care about this planet called earth prosper in quality of life and security .

He was commenting on things affecting the "world" so of course national security was not the point of his comments Mr. Gingrich. Global warming which affects access to things like drinking water, water for irrigation for crop growth, world food supply, global flooding in low lying coastal areas etc.., all are serious threats to the "world". Find a realistic thing to suggest he should resign.

When I clicked on the article, the last...very last thing I expected to create Newt's call for resignation was Kerry's recognition of Climate Change. Newt should be standing on a soapbox on some corner somewhere. Mind blown.

This is not new news about Kerry. What a sad administration. I think very few people today dispute climate change. We just don't agree on how it happened. Remember that most of the time you will hear this is the worst flood, snow, rain, etc. Most of the time in the US that means the worst of the last 200-250 years. To cover themselves, some media will actually say the worst of record. Sure we are experiancing climate change, and we are certially been part of that. The root cause maybe overpopulation, the deforstation of the world over the last 100 years, smog, etc. We don't actully know, and we don't now if this has happened several times in the past. Sure we should take measures to try and help but that this point, we should really focus resources on learning how to live in a different climate, than the pipe dream that we can some how reverse or change it.

We do need to get our head of the sand. Global warming is something that should concern us all. It should not resemble a political football.

With the poor record the Republican have had, who are they to tell anyone to resign. Look at what the Repubicans did under G. Bush. Destroyed the nation. And many of them are still on the job, trying to do the same under Obama. G. Bush is ranked number 5 as the worst president ever. He and his republican buddies left the nation in TRASH. Now they blame Obama for even trying to get the nation back on track, while all they do is BLOCK.
