McCain calls Obama ‘most naïve president in history’

(CNN) – While millions are transfixed watching the Olympics in Sochi, Sen. John McCain said he is focusing on Russia’s next moves concerning Ukraine after the Games.

“I’m very worried about what actions after the Olympics that (President Vladimir) Putin may take,” McCain said Thursday night on CNN’s “Piers Morgan Live.” “… He will do what’s necessary to keep Ukraine the crown jewel of the Russian empire in the Russian orbit.”

The Arizona Republican said he disagreed with President Barack Obama’s assessment that the U.S. approach “is not to see these as some Cold War chessboard in which we’re in competition with Russia.

“The President doesn’t think it’s a chess game. Certainly Vladimir Putin does. Putin wants a restoration of the Russian empire,” McCain said.

In an interview with Phoenix radio station KFYI on Thursday morning, the senator described Obama as the “most naïve president in history.”

“Remember when he said tell Vladimir, said to Medvedev who was Putin’s puppet, ‘Tell Vladimir if I’m re-elected, when I’m re-elected, I’ll be more flexible.’ Remember the reset button,” McCain said, referring to the March 2012 controversy over Obama’s "open-mic" comments to then-Russian President Dmitry Medvedev.

In same interview, McCain said the situation with Ukraine could easily spiral into a major international crisis.

McCain’s comments follow a statement he released Wednesday with Sen. Chris Murphy, D-Connecticut, urging targeted sanctions on the Ukrainian government.

“These sanctions should not, and will not, target the people or the country of Ukraine as a whole,” the statement said. “Instead, they will be narrowly focused on those individuals who must be held accountable for violating human rights and undermining democracy. We remain in contact with the Administration and look forward to working together on this legislation.”

McCain is the most vindictive biggest loser in history. John will not be happy until we are in another war.

McCain plays checkers while Obama plays chess. Go home John, you have caused enough trouble already.

Remind me again why we taxpayers continue to pay this man his annual (pocket change) expenses to jump from one media outlet after another media outlet year after year.

That would be ironic but that it is coming from a member of that party of the last President- the one who unleashed two wars that our nation did not need to fight; killed tens of thousands of civilians; all while cutting taxes for the rich. That, my friends defines "naïve". Meanwhile Mr. McCain, instead of flinging stones from the fringe, how about some solution? You cannot re-fight the Cold War a la Mr. Reagan- your party drained the treasury and crashed the economy in advance of that ill-conceived notion.

    Our president is NOT naive.
Nobody could have predicted (or maybe the country was that naive) the hatred of the teaklans/repugs/right wing bible nutsos against the man they wanted to make a one term president. The heck with our country.
Look in the mirror and watch any respect anyone ever had for you fade away when you sold your soul to the devil by picking a secessionist screecher from AK to be your running mate in 2008.
That was utterly stupid and more dangerous than anything a man who says he loves the US has ever done. You opened a Pandora can of hate the likes we have never seen in this country. We can only "hope" this is the last of her and you.
    Please just go away!

And you sir are a war monger. I seriously doubt the President is naive. We all know you do not like the president's approach to foreign policy, but that does not make you right and him wrong and/or naive. As mom always says, you cannot help someone else if you cannot help yourself. As bad as it sounds, this country simply cannot afford to be the everything to everyone in the world. Europe needs to step up the plate as well.

Sen. McCain has a lot of harsh criticism, but nowhere does he offer a solution to what is occurring RIGHT NOW in The Ukraine.

Some of the criticism of McCain in the comments may be true but the fact remains that our president is indeed naive as well as incompetent....think Libya, Iraq, Afghanistan, Syria, etc. In any "chess match" with Mr Putin, Mr Obama will come in second.

Yea, like when Obama said he would go after osama bin laden if he had actionable intelligence, even if he had to send a team into Palestine to do it, but mccain and all the other rwnj's heads all exploded over the insanity of such a mission.

    Naive' like that?
We have to put up with mccain because he is the only republicant who ever actually went to war for his country... including this last bunch of chicken hawks who started two of them w/o any idea of what they were doing, where they were going, how they were going to get out, or any type of plan whatsoever... with the exception of who was going to the no bid contracts. That was written in stone the second they blocked the state of Florida from recounting their citizen's votes and handed it over to their 5 buddies on the SCOTUS.

@Donna... Why are you not using any of your other cute monikers this morning?

Had he been elected, Mccain would've gave the Gipper a run for his money as being the most senile president in history.

Good morning my friend, it's been a while .
I read your post regarding the Kansas city butt-whipping in school bill but I was too late in trying to respond to you.
    Alas...I miss "us"!

    Me too!

It took me a moment to think back to what I responded to. I'm assuming you meant the comment I made on what my daughters thought of their mother's mothering skills during their teenage years? Thank goodness we ALL got past the histrionics and drama (I've never been one for drama, which, it seems, affected them immensely).

For people who claim to love they us so much, they sure show a lack of respect for its processes and operation. What happened to professionalism? Elections and politics in general are rapidly deteriorating to a bs reality show. I suppose the only people who are to blame are the citizens that allow, encourage, or egg on this kind of behavior

Donna, so he is right? We should have troops in Iraq, Afghanistan, Syria, and Ukraine, that doesn't sound naive at all, we should tell every nation what to do. And lets not forget Venezuela, and Korea, Iran, think of all the contracts, drooling yet?

i agree to a certain degree. but we all know when there is no sheriff in town, what happens. just be prepared for the consequences.

i don't think it is in the strategic interest of this country to have countless numbers of wars and genocides raging out of control.

Iraq- Bush's disaster (over budget, no exit strategy, no foreign policy to support, lack of equipment, too many civilian deaths, etc.)
    Afghanistan- ditto
Syria- And our options are? At least the WMDs are in disposal as we debate. reminder-it is a civil war- touched off in part by our Iraq war
Libya- Not a shot fired by an American on the ground, and the architect of the Pan Am 109 terrorist attack is gone

Actually, to still hold the belief that after more than a decade of fighting two wars that America is ready to go at it and fight another war in a different part of the globe is the naive thinking. Our armed forces have been strretched to their limit. Our financial resources have been stretched to their limit. Our taste for fighting somebody else's war is non-existent.

Yes, by now we would have troops pouring into the Ukraine if McCain had his way. BTW, how much is McCain's life worth to you? Give us a number. I've been waiting for 2 days for your answer on the monetary value of human life. Do you have a sliding scale, depending upon their political affiliation?
