Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer expected to veto 'religious freedom' bill

(CNN) – All signs indicate Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer will likely veto politically-charged legislation that supporters say promotes religious freedom and opponents contend discriminates against gays and lesbians.

Brewer did not signal her intention either way in an exclusive interview with CNN on Monday at the National Governors Association meeting in Washington.

    Rudy and DMFO,
It's the Jets vs. the Sharks. Without speaking for smith, I think that's what he means. That's all the repubs and dems do. They even have the crips and bloods colors, too! All they wanna do is pit us against each other and pick which gang to support.
    ----------------------------
I don't know whether to call your reference to a broadway play and gang names out of touch, a non-sequitor, or just plain weird.

Is the USA going to propose UN sanctions on all countries that do not guarantee and protect gay and lesbian rights to parade in bikinis down main strreet? Why can't we force muslim nations to live by our rules too?

I'm almost 60 years old & it's unbelievable that some Americans want to re-fight Civil Rights. And this is supposed to be a Christian Nation ? SHOW ME in the Four Gospels where Jesus said that the Golden Rule doesn't apply to every human ! The Father considers EVERY human on this Earth as His children. Those who would deny this shall also be denied by the Father.

I used to love going to Arizona, but not today. The scenery is fantastic, the national parks are great. The people, that's another matter altogether. Today the people scare me, and I'm not going to support people this backward. Sorry.

They are gangs, Rudy. Both of them. Repubs and dems are gangs. What is so hard to understand?

Perhaps you might want to add the Reverend Jesse Jackson and the Reverend Al Sharpton to that mix...

To me, you are marginalizing the TRUE struggle that African Americans had where there were actual segregation laws in place. There are no such laws now
    -------------------------------------------------
(Second attempt at responding to you tom l).
To me tom l when you capitalize the word "TRUE" you're implying that you don't believe that gays are undergoing a true social, economic and healthcare struggle.
Nothing can be further from the truth tom l as evidenced at the great strides made in the military, our legal and healthcare system to ensure that gays have access to the same benefits and rights that heteros enjoy.
You know that we do not need laws to ostracize and marginilize people tom l.
All you need is consent, tacit or implicit, from those who would stand by and see it occur.

@Rudy NYC: "Case in point, Rick Santorum. He's on record saying the 1st Amendment is wrong, that religion [read Christianity] should have a major role in government. He's like a great many conservatives. They seem to believe the Bill of Rights begins with the 2nd Amendment."

My favorite is how Santorum blasted people with college educations as being "elistist," when his special-needs daughter wouldn't be alive without those very same elitists.

Nothing like a repub/tea bag requiring you to check your brain at the door to vote for them!

I have been in Arizona 1 time , the little tiny corner of the state where Rt. 15 goes between Nevada and Utah, I am a non-gay man , if this bill passes, I would gladly drive an additional 200 miles out of my way to avoid going through a state
that thinks they can treat anyone with such disrespect.......a sad sad commentary on the state of affairs in that state.......even sadder is a Senator from Arizona who can't even answer a directly stated question.....you know on second thought....... I will never ever even think of stepping foot in that state again....not my tires.or my .....gas money....lunch money ......hotel money.....dinner money .....night out on the town money ......Super Bowl (yeh right .....) money ......oh yeh .....and btw.....
I HAVE LOTS and LOTS of MONEY that Arizona will never see : )

@Tony: "By vetoing the bill, Gov. Brewer will save Arizona the embarrassment of having its law invalidated by courts."

And expense – I'm tired of wasting tax payers dollars in court on GOP/tea bag nonsense!

These are the kinds of laws that come from small, ignorant, hateful minds.

    In other words, republican.

"I think if she signs this bill she and everyone that voted for this should have to pay to defend this in a court of law. If this happened you would see less of these kind of insane bills."

Unless society as a whole continues to stand up condemning these types of laws, I don't think much will change in the extreme right wing of the Grand Old Party. For whatever reason, these folks relish the "kick" they get in unleashing such garbage at those they are intolerant of. I won't call them christian ... they are far, far removed from Christianity.

This is NOT a "both sides do it" or "what's the problem, it is NOT a law yet" argument. That one political party even hints that this would be tolerated in America says all I need to understand at how low the GOP is willing to further their platforms state by state.

    -------------------------------------------------
There is a difference between rationalizing and trying to convert or impose one's religion on someone else my friend.
Lots of nuts out there beating the living daylights out of people or even killing them because "God" told them too.
Any excuse will do is all I'm saying Rudy.
They feel pretty safe using religion as their excuse to marginalize, and make others feel unwelcomed in their establishment.
After all they can't come out and say what they really think and feel lest they be labeled as bigots and racists can they?
Religion is the acceptable "go to".
    Crusades anyone?

Sorry, sonny. This is not "supposed to be a Christian nation." It never has been, and it never shall be. Because once it crosses that line, then the country will cease existing as a democratic republican. Some forces are trying to turn this country into a theocratic aristocracy, a country ruled by an elite who would use The Bible to justify their actions.

Fundamentalists of all faiths rationalize their hateful actions by proclaiming it as "God's will." It's what narcissistic, frightened people who lack compassion do.

How do you come up with this headline and then say the next statement? Playing games???

    +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Or maybe they're predicting she wouldn't be so foolish as to support it and risk losing tourism dollars and new businesses moving to her state, or ANOTHER Super Bowl as the NFL has already pulled one from AZ due to the state's ignorant ways, and has indicated they're following the developments with this awful piece of legislation and will act accordingly.

"Religious Freedom" bill?????????? This is not about "religious freedom" its about HATE, discrimination, bigotry! Anyone who has a brain knows that the Bible was also used as an excuse for the horror and brutality of slavery in the U.S.! And the excuse for Jim Crow laws in the South!

I hope that Arizona will feel such a huge backlash from this, that HATE will be STOPPED in that God-forsaken-state!

"LET ME GIVE YOU A NEW COMMAND: 'LOVE ONE ANOTHER. IN THE SAME WAY I LOVED YOU, YOU LOVE ONE ANOTHER. THIS IS HOW EVERYONE WILL RECOGNIZE THAT YOU ARE MY DISCIPLES - WHEN THEY SEE YOU HAVE LOVE FOR EACH OTHER." ~ JESUS.... (JOHN 13:34 THE MESSAGE)

What IS IT about 'Love one another" that these so-called-Christians in Arizona not get???!!!

He is including the "dems" in this type of bill but I think the conservative radical religious right owns this one all the way. The Gop has courted both the tea party and the radical religious right, and now they need to deal with the consequences.
