Biden jokes 'I may be a white boy, but I can jump'

(CNN) – In another quintessential “Biden” moment, Vice President Joe Biden joked about his basketball skills in Washington on Tuesday.

Known at times for his off-the-cuff remarks, Biden said at an event honoring African-American history month that he and former NBA star Kevin Johnson, now Sacramento’s mayor, could take on the President in a game of hoops.

"I told the President, next game I have him," Biden said. "Just remember I may be a white boy, but I can jump."

On a more serious note, Biden's remarks focused on voting rights, pointing to states like North Carolina, Alabama and Texas which have passed controversial voter ID laws. Biden linked the fight over voting rights playing out in states now to the civil rights movement of the 1960s.

"These guys never go away. Hatred never, never goes away," Biden said. "The zealotry of those who wish to limit the franchise cannot be smothered by reason."

“Without the right to vote, nothing else much mattered,” he said.

CNN'S Dana Davidsen contributed to this report.

VP Biden... SO MUC FOR VOTING RIGHTS! The example I shared before, is real common here in the Voting Rights Acts home. By the way, it's time:March 6-10. Bloody Sunday, Bridge Crossing Jubilee. 2015 is the 50th anniversity. Votin Rights Museum needs sponsors. I can say these things. i have already been blackballed.

What's your problem VP Biden, people need ID to attend your speeches, how come at the last election democrats made sure that many many votes of our service personal did NOT count. Are you afraid your followers can only vote ONE time.

White Men Can't Jump and Play that Funky Music White Boy before the haters start on VP Biden.
Voting rights ARE a right we all share and is extremely important in this age of gerrymandering and the koch brothers with all their money trying to buy elections from the districts on up to the White House.

WOW.....just think of the coverage that comment would get by the news media if Biden was a Republican. But as a Democrat it wont get much air time.
