Add another name to the House retirement list

Washington (CNN) - Another longtime member of Congress is calling it quits.

Democratic Rep. Ed Pastor of Arizona announced Thursday that he will retire at end of the year rather than run for re-election in November.

"I've been in public office for 39 years and it's been a pleasure to serve the people of Arizona," Pastor said in a statement.

"After 23 in Congress, I feel it's time for me to seek out a new endeavor. It's been a great honor, a great experience and a great joy for me to serve in Congress. I think it's time for me to do something else."

Pastor, 70, was first elected to the House in a special election in 1991.

The Phoenix-area 7th Congressional District is considered safe for Democrats. In 2012, Pastor won 82% of the district's vote while President Barack Obama grabbed 72%.

Pastor joins a number of veteran members of the House, both Democrats and Republicans, who are retiring at the end of the year. Overall, 21 House members - 11 Republicans and 10 Democrats - have announced their retirements.

Thirteen more House members are bidding for the Senate, and four more are running for other offices.

Democrats need to pick up 17 GOP-held seats to win back control of the Republican-led chamber, a feat most political handicappers say is unlikely considering the shrinking number of competitive congressional districts.

I read that Boehner bought an $835,000 condo on Marco Island, FL. Maybe he'll retire too.

That's pricey for his salary, could he have gained wealth from his position? The look on his face when the president was speaking about trying to help the less fortunate, is all to typical for the gop. Not one iota of compassion from the lot of em, they live the guilded life, from your tax dollars, a lifestyle they wish you to never know.

I wish him well in his retirement. I understand that about six, or so, Tea Party freshmen in the House are running against incumbent Democrats in some Senate races, which Republicans have boldly declared "vulnerable." Didn't they try this in 2010, and again 2012?

Didn't it not work, and backfire in their faces? Why are they trying it again? Messaging. I guess that they feel that they've finally gotten it right this time. Instead of war on abortion, then gays, then voting rights..... ....It's going to be voting, gays, and then abortions. It's just sure to work. People will listen this time, instead of tuning them out.

I just watched the history of the KKK. We apparently do not learn from history. The tea party is just the KKK under cover. The level of hate, lies, and ideals are the same as the KKK expressed throughout history.

Yeah, but doesn't it gall you to know his district is safe from the GOP virus? Symptoms are foaming at the mouth, heightened agression, irrational and delusional ravings that Donald Trump has the President's birth certificate, and an inability to deal with reality.
