Rep. Issa says IRS's Lois Lerner will testify

Updated 2:39 p.m. ET, 3/2/2014

(CNN) – Lois Lerner, former director of tax exempt organizations for the IRS, will testify this week on Capitol Hill, Rep. Darrell Issa said Sunday.

Issa said he received word from Lerner's attorney that she will provide testimony to the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee about her role in potentially unfair targeting of certain political groups by the IRS.

But Lerner’s attorney, William Taylor, tells CNN "she intends to continue to assert her Fifth Amendment rights."

A spokesman for Issa told CNN later Sunday that Lerner requested a one week delay in testifying but was told she must make that request at a hearing Wednesday.

Issa, chairman of the committee, made the original confirmation on "Fox News Sunday."

Lerner retired last year after being placed on administrative leave by the IRS after she said the IRS applied extra scrutiny to both conservative and liberal political groups seeking tax-exempt status between 2010 and 2012.

She testified before Issa's committee in May, reading a statement saying she had not broken any laws or regulations, but invoked her Fifth Amendment privileges in refusing to answer questions.

Republicans said Lerner waived her Fifth Amendment rights by reading that statement.

Issa said Sunday that Lerner was given no immunity ahead of her testimony. He speculated she's willing to testify now because of mounting evidence against her.

"We've interviewed the people all around her to build a case for why she is at the center of this targeting," Issa said.

CNN's Dana Bash, Kevin Bohn and Deirdre Walsh contributed to this report.

Wall Street cheers as the CORRUPT Fed continues to subsidize the market via QE. This does not help main street! It just creates a larger bubble that will some day bring down our economy....

The tea party is a threat to the corrupt system of massive debt organized by the IRS overlords at the Federal Reserve.
Will liberals and RINO Republicans ever realize the consequences of our Nations debt? They and the limousine liberal leaders our bankrupting our country. And ANY libertarian conservative (Tea Party) who speaks out is endlessly smeared! Sad...

So why does the media let Issa get away with this BS?
So is the article saying that Lerner is going to show up but still plead the 5th?
Politico is reporting that Lerner's lawyer said Issa is WRONG, that she is not testifying.

You mean Bush appiontee Lerner will appear before Chairman Issa's inquisition again. All this happened under a hold-over Bush appiontee chairman, and was approved/implemented by a conservative Republican director. Only liberal groups were denied tax exempt status. Quit wasting tax payer money on partisan witch hunts, and start investigating the abuses of Karl Rove and Koch roaches tax exemptions as "nonpolitcal" oranizations. While you are at it, investgate the violation of tax exempt status by talibangelical, Dominionist ministers who campaign from the pulpit.

  9. ThinkAgain - If you want Congress to actually do something FOR the American people, vote OUT the repub/tea bag majority

Will Issa make a point of showing that the IRS also targeted LIBERAL groups? The targeting was a dumb response to the huge influx of "social welfare" organizations created in the wake of Citizens United.

And to thinks Supreme Court Justice Alito said that Citizens United wouldn't have an effect on our elections ...

"We've interviewed the people all around her to build a case for why she is at the center of this targeting," Issa said.

In his last witch hunt, he refused to allow anyone who had a positive experience with ACA to testify. That is so republican of a witch hunt.

So far, millions spent on needless, useless, and non-productive hearings, and investigations. Does anyone know the definition of insanity? Obviously the GOTP does not. Or they don't care.

Still looking for the so called "smoking gun" Issa? What a joke. If he spent this much effort trying to create jobs, the unemployment rate would be at 4%.

The IRS already openly admitted to targeting political groups! However Liberals are more than happy to sweep yet another botch under the rug.
If the IRS targeted Liberal groups, there would have been prosecutions already.

When are they going to start going after Obama and Pelosi for blatant health insurance fraud? "You can keep you policy. Period."

    Well now good buddies,
If Mz. Lerner had nothing to hide she wouldn't have taken the 5Th. The real problem is the Liberal's have so *ucked up the country the last 100 years they can't co anything but take the 5Th. The best example of Liberal's is of course Obama who lies up front. IF YOU LIKE YOUR HEALTH PLAN, YOU CAN KEEP YOUR HEALTH PLAN, PERIOD. Gawd are some of you people stupid. The unemployment picture hasn't improved any since Obama was elected. But guess who voted for it all these years? Guess who is going to pay the bill.

Maybe you could pull out her fingernails, or put her on the rack.
Mr. Issa, you (like your Righty brethren) don't get it. The IRS did it's job- and no matter how hard you wish otherwise, the law, and federal regulations of these United States still apply to the GOP. Groups seeking 501 ( c ) 4 tax except status were quizzed and ultimately given that status is they met muster. That is called "process". The TEA Party has no special status.

Maybe you could turn your attentions towards the systematic theft of voting rights in America- if you wish to be useful, that is.

Once again, Issa made public statements, allegedly quoting someone else, which the 'someone else' immediately denied.

I don't think Issa knows how to speak without lying.

I love all those dolts who say Issa should "get over it". You can't allow a President to target his political opponents with the use of the IRS and then just excuse the entire episode. And to those who still perpetuate the lie than Obama wasn't involved and that this is a "phony scandal", consider that Lois Lerner herself apologized for targeting conservative groups and then pled the 5th. If that doesn't point to corruption, what does!

Lois and anyone else who gets paid with tax payers money should not be allowed to plead the fifth. If you did nothing wrong why hide
