Congressman denies accusation of assaulting wife

(CNN) – Rep. Alan Grayson strongly denied an accusation that he assaulted and injured his wife, his office said in a statement.

"These allegations are absolutely false, completely unfounded, and clearly designed to vilify and harm Congressman Grayson," said Lauren Doney, a spokesperson for the Florida Democrat.

The Orlando Sentinel reported Tuesday that a judge granted a temporary protective injunction against Grayson after his wife, Lolita, filed a complaint, saying he shoved and injured her over the weekend.

Grayson's office said witnesses who saw the incident "also reject Ms. Grayson's version of events as an outright lie," adding that it was Lolita Grayson who attacked her husband, not the opposite. "He did not respond to Ms. Grayson's violent assault," the statement continued.

Lolita Grayson, who's been married to Alan Grayson for almost 24 years, filed for divorce less than two months ago, according to the Sentinel.

"Since filing for divorce, Ms. Grayson's behavior has become increasingly erratic, and she has demonstrated an alarming disconnect from reality," read the statement from his office.

According to her complaint, Lolita Grayson said her husband pushed her "very hard against the front door" causing her to fall to the ground, the Sentinel reported. In self defense, she said she pushed him in the face and kneed him the stomach, according to the newspaper.

The congressman was not arrested after the encounter and is not facing any charges, the Sentinel reported.

Grayson, who's known for making controversial statements in the past, was first elected to Congress in 2008 but lost his 2010 re-election bid. He ran again in 2012 and won.

CNN's Deirdre Walsh and Ashley Killough contributed to this report.

I'm trying so hard not to laugh...because it really isn't funny....but jeez....
    @ tom l
Without all the theatrics tom l this one hits home closer than you'd know.
Regardless of who did what, this is not a good situation.
People do lose their minds when someone files for divorce.
That little "push to the face and knee to the stomach" though....well...lol!

He looks like an abuser. If he's guilty, he needs to be punished. No man should ever put his hands on any woman.

@ tom: "It should be interesting to see how the gang responds to this one."

I don't like this guy. I don't like domestic abuse used as a political talking point. I don't like domestic abuse used as a divorce ploy. I don't like a "he said / she said" journalistic approach to politics. I don't like men pushing women around. I don't like women pushing men around. I don't like men beating the bejesus out of women. I don't like women beating the bejesus out of men.

That being said: I would never vote for the man to begin with.

If there is actual evidence of him assaulting her, then he needs to pay the price.

Add Grayson's name to the list of Democrats (Spitzer, Weiner, Filner) who are conducting a War On Women.

    The gang's response.
Did it change anything in your universe?
    Just asking...
    @ Lynda Minnesota
Good morning my friend. Without exposing my life history let's just say that I agree with your post.
I couldn't help but chuckle at Mrs. Grayson's retaliation on Mr. G. Regardless of what witnesses saw that day, suffice it to sat that things occur away from peering/witness eyes that would make her behaviour seem irrational if judged as a stand alone incident.
There is build up in these situations. Build-up that ultimately leads to a temporary protective order being requested and granted, and trust me, these are NOTeasily granted; and build up that results in that "push to the face and knee to the stomach".
Without knowing all the facts here I'm going to jump out there and say " Way to go Mrs. G".

Shouldn't we wait until all the facts are out before jumping to conclusions, righties? I mean you're DEMANDING that the benefit of the doubt be given to governor christie in the numerous scandals sprouting like mushrooms on a cow pasture on a dewey spring morning – shouldn't the same consideration be shown to everyone?

Meh. Let the court figure it out. These things go both ways all the time. Sometimes people abuse their spouses and sometimes the fact that a court will grant the temporary restraining order as a matter of course based on the accusation and statements of fear is used as a divorce tactic.

As for "war on women," grow up. That refers to the policies and agenda being pushed, not private personal behavior like cheating, etc.

    "He looks like an abuser"

Really? I thought that people were against profiling.......

@silencedogood – no – unlike progressives I and most conservatives will not tolerate spousal abuse under any circumstances. I guess that's why so few republicans attempt comebacks after things like this....I wonder why so many democrats do....who is really conducting a war on women?

Grayson is one of the more rapid Democrats. CNN left out party affiliation for a reason. It might cast a shadow on the party of the women. Party of the women, like in, the Kennedy's, Clinton, Gore, and Grayson, Franken etc.

Nowadays private life has become Public life eh!. Who is ready to check or monitor what is going in each and every individual household? Leave for themselves. Once they are through with their problems in their marriage life, everyone who interfered will look like a fool.
