First on CNN: Republicans hit Landrieu over climate change talk-a-thon

(CNN) - Nearly 30 senators staged an overnight debate on the Senate floor Monday night through Tuesday morning, trying to bring attention to what they say is a dire need to combat climate change with legislative action.

But Sen. Mary Landrieu, the new chairman of the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee, was noticeably absent from the demonstration. The vulnerable Democrat faces re-election this fall in Louisiana, a state with large swaths of conservative voters.

And Republicans aren't letting her absence go unnoticed.

The National Republican Senatorial Committee, which aims to get Republicans elected to the Senate, put out a new web video Tuesday, hitting Landrieu for allowing the talk-a-thon to take place, despite her chairmanship. The video also argues the senator doesn't stand up enough for American energy.

"We're tired of waiting," the ad's narrator argues. A large spinning wheel–the kind typically seen as a website is loading–whirls on a black screen throughout the 30-second video, trying to convey a sense of impatience.

CNN reached out to see if Landrieu had a comment on why she didn't go to the event, but her office did not give an immediate response.

Landrieu wasn't the only Democratic senator who skipped the all-night session. Sens. Kay Hagan of North Carolina, Mark Pryor of Arkansas and Mark Begich of Alaska–all vulnerable lawmakers up for re-election this year–also passed.

Climate change over the years has turned into an issue that few facing difficult re-election campaigns have wanted to touch.

When Democrats tried to pass legislation during President Barack Obama's first term that would have capped carbon emissions, skepticism around climate change reached an all-time high.

Opponents, led by organizations and businesses involved in the fossil fuel industry, successfully turned public opinion and stopped any efforts in its tracks.

But the tide appears to be changing.

According to Gallup, 41% now say that climate change is exaggerated - 7 percentage points lower than its high in 2010. And the number of those who say the seriousness of the issue is underestimated is on the rise.

In his second term, Obama has also pledged to take more executive actions to deal with climate change and dedicate more money to the issue.

It would seem that Sen. Mary Landrieu would prefer to give life, and legs to stand on, to the Republican talking points by running from the very issues that she's supposed to be supporting. I guess some folks just didn't learn anything in 2010. Democrats ran from the lies that Republicans told, which only gave the lies credibility and encouraged them to tell more. The only way to really succeed is to have the courage to fail.

No, it couldn't be that "climate change" really is a hoax. Or, at best, climate "scientists" desperately trying to defend their reputations—and their research grants—by cherry-picking data, trying to suppress data that doesn't fit their agendas, trying equally to suppress the publications of anyone who doesn't agree with them, and just plain lying..

At best, athropogenic climate change is unproven; at worst it's a deliberate fraud perpetrated by people trying to prove their preconceptions rather than honestly seeking understanding, or it's another excuse by those of the Left to try, as they always do, to grow government at society's expense.

Enough – you can count republican successes using no hands. They have none, except the great republican recession and the republican government shutdown, and those are really failures.

Maybe they should imprison ALL of the scientists until they recant their theories.
That is what happened to Galileo and Copernicus when they put forth their theories. That was a proud moment in History... imprisoning people who are right because you refuse to believe the truth.
Luckily neither of these great men (I have a sneaking feeling some of the righties are thinking, "How come Galileo is great, all he did was Hangover II and interview Obama?") put forth theories which unless acted upon would mean a change in life as we know it on this planet.
I shouldn't give these people ideas....

Henry Miller's quote he starts out with has nothing to do with a hoax... it has more to do with big money successfully silencing their critics. He just rambles on into hannity world w/o a care in the world.
The bubble of this one is strong.

It's sad to see that the Republican Party no longer has anything intellectual to contribute to the conversation. In fact, the Republican Party has worn its' lack of intellectual innovation like a badge of honor. They've reduced themselves to sloganeering, vitriol, and misinformation campaigns.

    @Henry Miller

Perhaps you should attempt to educate yourself before you make authoritative statements on topics you clearly know nothing about. There is a reason why the earth doesn't cool to far below freezing at night time, it's called the atmosphere. There are reasons why the atmosphere retains heat. One you understand that, you can start investigating those reasons.

The fact that carbon dioxide absorbs and re-emits infrared radiation is indisputable. Not all gasses in the atmosphere do this. The fact that CO2 concentrations in the atmosphere are increasing and much, much higher than they were even 100 years ago has been measured and is indisputable. The fact that global temperatures have increased is indisputable and well documented.

You can spout your BS conspiracy theories all you want, until you provide evidence that the above is false, you're just an uneducated fool who is in way over his head.

It is necessary to talk about climate change if only to start developing some consciousness about this important topic. And by considering the length of the talk, I can see that the participants clearly see that it is a topic worth discussing, it should for all of us but many just do not notice or prefer to sweep it under the rug.
I think that it is already kind of late, but we must at least talk about it.

There is a severe problem with the Democrats to pull an all nighter on climate change, when 7 million Americans are unemployed/underemployed. IT"S THE ECONOMY< STUPID!!!!!! Then they wonder why Americans rather vote Republican in November than Democrat.

It is important that US senators start discussing climate change so that they can point out trends and differences happening right before our eyes. We just can not sweep what is so visible under the rug, and discard it like we do with yesterday's paper

Mary Landrieu's No 1 Priority is LOUISIANA. If that means siding w/the Oil Folks , she'll do it. If taht means tardibg her support for an Obamacare vote, she'll do it. If it means trying to balance Coastal Erosion caused by Oil, she'll do it. She is not a Political Theologian, she's a practical gal. We could use more like her in Congress, especially in the Senate.

And they want to know why they are called Dumbocrats. Where is the legislation? There are millions of people unemployed, 50 million on welfare and food stamps, the lowest number of people in the work force since 1980 and instead of trying to find solutions to help create jobs – these idiots stay up all night to talk about something they don't have the guts to propose as legislation because they know it's all BS. I don't want to hear about the Republicans wasting time passing bills to kill Obamacare – at least they have the guts to propose legislation for what they believe in.

You can't prove a negative. Jesus Christ, did any of you people make it past the 5th grade? Prove that there is no Santa Claus. You can't. It is incumbent upon the person who makes the claim to provide evidence that supports his/her claim, not on everyone else to disprove whatever asinine thing that person is saying.

Sorry, it doesn't work that way. Miller made the assertions that data is being cherry picked, etc. The burden of proof is his.
