(CNN) - Sen. Ted Cruz appeared to distance himself again from fellow GOP Sen. Rand Paul, this time over social values.
The first-term Republican senator from Texas, who was in Iowa Tuesday, was asked by the Des Moines Register about Paul's recent comments that Republicans should "agree to disagree" about social issues.

Cruz seemed to disagree, saying, "I think that we should continue to defend our shared values."
"There are some who say the Republican party should no longer stand for life. I don't agree with that," he also said. "There are some who say the Republican party should no longer stand for traditional marriage. I don't agree with them, either."
Paul, who's considered more libertarian-leaning than Cruz, said in an interview that Republicans will have to draw an internal ceasefire over social issues in order to expand.
"The Republican Party is not going to give up on having quite a few people who do believe in traditional marriage," he told the website Vocativ.com. "But the Republican Party also has to find a place for young people and others who don't want to be festooned by those issues."
The two senators normally line up on a range of issues. They were both elected with strong tea party support and have vowed to shake things up in Washington.
But as Cruz and Paul consider presidential bids for 2016 and fight for the conservative base, the two have made comments that further distinguish themselves in recent weeks, particularly over foreign policy and ways to broaden the Republican Party.
just me
They actually are quite similar. They're both lousy senators who would make lousy presidents. Thank gawd neither will ever get a chance to prove it.

Exactly- it hardly matters what they say- we need to examine what they do. Case closed.
@Darren
What Cruz fails to understand is that no one wants the GOP / Tea Party to stop standing up for right-to-life and traditional marriage. What people want is for the GOP / Tea Party to stop trying to force their beliefs on the masses via legislation. If what some are doing can be deemed sinful, then let God judge them when their time has come. Stop trying to do His job for him.

When did "freedom" come to mean "my religious views can dictate laws you have to follow"?
“I am for freedom of religion and against all maneuvers to bring about a legal ascendancy of one sect over another.”
~Founding Father Thomas Jefferson, letter to Elbridge Gerry, January 26, 1799
@S.B. Stein: "I would like Cruz to win and be challenged on his eligibility to run since he wasn't born on US soil. Wasn't he born in Canada? "
Yes, to a mother with U.S. citizenship and a father with Cuban citizenship (his dad became a U.S. citizen in 2005). That makes Teddy ineligible to be POTUS.
And yet that doesn't stop him from taking money from his supporters. Suckers!
Cruz can run- he has an American citizen as a parent. By the way Fair- you guys still own the Birthers.

I'm not so sure. Seeing how he's never formally applied for U.S. citizenship, he may not technically be one. Cruz has claimed that he was automatically a citizen. That's wrong. He was merely *automatically eligible* to apply for citizenship, which would have been routinely granted. If you're born on foreign soil, you are not "automatically a citizen." You are merely eligible to apply for automatic citizenship.
You cannot be a citizen until there are U.S. records of your existence. Being born on foreign soil does not automatically create U.S. records somewhere of your birth. You must notify by applying for it Cruz may have to formally apply, and then wait 14 years.
The above photo of Cruz and Paul remind me of a bad 70s cop show !
Randy and the Cuban
Please let Cruz run.....We need more comedy.
Did anybody else have Dumb & Dumber pop into their head when they saw that picture?
when will the birthers stand up and be counted. cruz is a canadian Cuban, not american..
That's why Paul has the better chance of winning in the primary, and in the general election...........he is less prone to dictate to the people, on religious issues.
bland paul is a plageirist, so count him out as well. maybe lee will be the clown car king
There seems to be some confusion about whether Ted Cruz is eligible to be president since he was born in Canada. Well I'm here to tell you he is NOT eligible. Otherwise, I and my fellow republicans would not have spent the last 6 years whining about Obama not being eligible to be president. And Obama was born in the US, so Cruz is REALLY not eligible.
The GOP presidential primaries are going to get ugly. Pretty ironic that Sen Paul's Libertarian Social Conservatism may not pass Tea Pary purity tests.
If Cruz cannot run there is a small group of anarchists who support him, who are going to be very angry.
These two are PERFECT examples of what's wrong with today's Republican party. In 2012 they had Bachman, Cain, Perry and Trump. In 2014 they have Cruz and Paul (SO far.) When will the Republican party get its act together? Reince Priebus can claim all he wants to that they have, or will, but that doesn't make it true, judging from these two losers.
To a birther, Canada is the 50th state, Hawaii is not.
The GOP can't possibly be so bankrupt of smart reasonable people that they have to continue to prop up these clowns to represent the party. At first it appeared to be a temporary phase with Palin, Bachman, Cain, Perry, Trump et al, but now it seems to be the new dumbed-down standard.
Paul hit it right on the head about the internal cease fire – the problem is, they won't listen to him
